Yes—Clay can automate website screenshots. The quickest route is Clay’s native Get Page Screenshot action: place a page URL in a table, run the action for each row, and write the returned Screenshot URL to a column. For richer formats or lower-level rendering control, connect an HTTP API such as ScreenshotOne, ScreenshotAPI, or a custom Cloudflare Browser Rendering endpoint. Clay Workflows can also start a capture whenever your system sends a webhook.
This guide shows each approach, how to handle retention, protected pages, retries, and storage, and when an external screenshot service is a better fit.
Choose the right Clay screenshot pattern
Your input and output requirements determine the best design:
| Pattern | Best for | What you configure | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Clay table action | Fast, row-by-row screenshots of URLs already in a table | A URL column, the Get Page Screenshot action, and an output column | Clay says the hosted Screenshot URL lives for 30 days |
| ScreenshotOne through Clay HTTP API | Full-page images, PDFs, animations, and rendering options | Provider account, API key, endpoint, options, and response mapping | You must manage provider credentials and verify its retention policy |
| ScreenshotAPI through Clay | Imported domain lists and automated capture in GTM workflows | Domains, provider connection, and mapped output fields | Output and limits depend on the provider configuration |
| Clay Workflow webhook | Event-driven captures from another application | Webhook trigger, inferred request schema, screenshot step, and downstream destination | You must validate input and design retries for your use case |
| Cloudflare Browser Rendering endpoint | Engineering teams needing a lower-level rendered HTML/JavaScript endpoint | Custom endpoint integration and your own request, auth, and storage handling | More engineering work than a native Clay action |
Option A: automate screenshots in a Clay table
Clay documents the native action as: “This action takes a screenshot of a webpage given a link.” Use it when each company, account, or prospect row already contains the page you want to capture.

1. Add and normalize the URL column
- Open the Clay table that contains your companies or records.
- Add a column named Website URL, or use an existing Company About Page URL column.
- Ensure each value includes a complete URL such as
https://example.com. Normalize missing schemes before running the action; a bare domain can be rejected or interpreted inconsistently. - Remove obvious placeholders, internal notes, and URLs that require a login unless you have a provider that can authenticate.
2. Add the native screenshot action
- Choose Get Page Screenshot with Clay from the table’s enrichment or action menu.
- Map the input to your Website URL column.
- Map the action’s Screenshot Url output to a new column, for example Homepage Screenshot.
- Run the action on a small sample first. Inspect several returned images for redirects, cookie banners, mobile layouts, and pages that load content only after interaction.
- When the sample is correct, fill the action down for the remaining rows.
The result is a hosted screenshot URL, not an indefinite archive. Clay states that the screenshot “only lives for 30 Days and requires rerunning the action thereafter.” If you need an audit trail, copy each image to durable object storage or your document system as part of the workflow, then save the copied URL or asset ID in Clay. That storage step is an operational safeguard based on the stated retention limit.
Table design that scales
- Keep the source URL and screenshot output in separate columns so a URL correction does not destroy your history.
- Add a capture timestamp and a status column (for example, queued, captured, or needs review) if screenshots feed a sales or QA process.
- Run a representative sample before filling thousands of rows; this catches redirects and unsupported pages without spending a full batch run.
- For recurring monitoring, schedule a new run before the 30-day hosted URL expires and archive the resulting files elsewhere.
Option B: use ScreenshotOne through Clay’s HTTP API enrichment
ScreenshotOne offers a Clay provider as well as an HTTP API path. This is useful when a URL alone is not enough and you need a full-page image, PDF, animation, or provider-specific rendering controls.
- Create a ScreenshotOne account and obtain an API key.
- In Clay, create a Website URL column and populate it with normalized links.
- Add an HTTP API enrichment and select or configure the ScreenshotOne endpoint.
- Enter the API key in Clay’s connection or configuration fields, not in a prompt, formula, or row value.
- Set the rendering options you require, such as full-page capture or an alternate output format.
- Run a test row, inspect the returned response, and map the screenshot, PDF, or animation field into your table.
- Run the enrichment for the remaining records and monitor failures separately from successful captures.
Confirm the provider’s current retention, quotas, and billing before designing a long-term archive. Clay’s 30-day rule applies to its native hosted screenshot; it does not establish retention for a BYO-account provider.
Option C: capture imported domains with ScreenshotAPI
ScreenshotAPI is another HTTP API option exposed for Clay workflows. It fits a table that begins with a list of domains rather than curated page URLs, and is positioned for monitoring, brand-consistency checks, content analysis, account research, and related go-to-market processes.

- Import or create the domain column in Clay.
- Choose the ScreenshotAPI provider or HTTP API action.
- Map the domain (or a formula that adds
https://) to the request URL. - Configure the provider credentials and capture parameters in the connection settings.
- Test a few domains, then map the returned image or URL to an output column.
Domain lists often contain parked domains, redirects, country-specific hosts, or non-HTML endpoints. Treat those outcomes as reviewable statuses rather than silently replacing them with an empty image.
Option D: trigger screenshots with a Clay webhook workflow
Clay Workflows support an On webhook call trigger. Clay generates a URL, and each POST to it becomes a run. This lets your CRM, crawler, form, or internal service request a screenshot only when an event occurs.
Build the workflow
- Create a new Clay Workflow and select On webhook call as the trigger.
- Paste representative JSON or a cURL request so Clay can infer fields. A useful body might contain
url,account_id, andcapture_type. - Pass the inferred
urlfield to the native screenshot action or to an HTTP API provider step. - Write the returned Screenshot URL or asset reference to the downstream system, audience record, or Clay table.
- Add conditions before capture: reject missing or malformed URLs, non-HTML responses, and pages known to require authentication.
- Define retry behavior for transient timeouts and rate limits. Store the original event ID so a retry cannot create an unintended duplicate record.
Example webhook payload
Send a POST body such as:
{"url":"https://example.com/pricing","account_id":"acct_123","capture_type":"full_page"}
Use the sample only to teach Clay the schema; keep secrets out of the payload. Put API keys in the provider connection or secret configuration.
Rendering, access, and reliability considerations
Pages that need JavaScript
Some pages return a mostly empty HTML shell and populate content in the browser. Native Clay capture may be sufficient for ordinary pages, while an HTTP provider or Cloudflare Browser Rendering endpoint is more appropriate when you need explicit HTML-and-JavaScript rendering controls. No provider guarantees access to every protected or bot-blocked site.

The USB webcam is compatible with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, OBS Studio, and all major platforms across Windows, macOS, and Linux
Login walls and bot checks
A screenshot request cannot see content that requires an interactive login unless the selected provider supports the necessary authentication method. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, and robots or firewall policies can produce a challenge page rather than the intended site. Flag these rows for review instead of treating the challenge image as a successful capture.
Lazy loading and interaction
Long pages may load images only after scrolling, and some content appears after a click. Select a provider that supports full-page rendering or scripted interaction when those states matter. Otherwise document that the capture represents the initial viewport, not the complete page.
Throughput and repeatability
- Start with a small sample to identify systematic failures.
- Process large tables in batches and watch provider or Clay rate limits.
- Use deterministic URL normalization and a capture timestamp so a later rerun is auditable.
- Keep raw error text or status in a separate column; replacing failures with blank cells makes debugging difficult.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No screenshot URL is returned | Blank, malformed, or unsupported URL | Validate that the value is an absolute HTTP(S) URL, then rerun the row. |
| Image shows a consent dialog, chat bubble, or redirect | The page state changed before capture or interaction was required | Use a provider with wait or interaction controls, or capture a stable public URL. |
| Blank or partial page | JavaScript, lazy loading, timeout, or blocked resource | Increase the provider’s render/wait settings where available; otherwise use a lower-level browser-rendering endpoint. |
| Authentication page instead of content | Target requires a session or login | Use an approved authenticated integration, or capture a public page. |
| Previously saved native URL stops working | Clay’s 30-day hosted retention expired | Archive the image in durable storage during the original run and store that asset reference. |
| Webhook runs duplicate records | Retry or sender replayed the same event | Include an event ID and make the downstream write idempotent. |

ScreenshotNeo is a direct website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so you can call it from a Clay HTTP step or from your own service instead of maintaining browser automation. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.
