For a site protected by HTTP Basic Authentication, give the credentials to a browser context before navigation, then save the page with Playwright or Puppeteer. For a one-off visual check, Chrome DevTools can capture frames while a page loads. If the site shows its own username-and-password form, that is application login, not HTTP Basic Authentication, and it needs a form-specific login flow or an authenticated session.
Only capture systems you are authorized to access. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, restrict screenshot-file permissions, and avoid placing passwords in URLs or logs.
First identify which authentication the site uses
HTTP Basic Authentication begins when the server returns a 401 Unauthorized response with a WWW-Authenticate challenge. The browser then sends an Authorization header. Chromium documents Basic, Digest, NTLM and Negotiate schemes, subject to platform and policy support; see the Chromium HTTP authentication documentation.
A page that loads normally and then displays a login form uses application-level authentication. Playwright’s httpCredentials and Puppeteer’s page.authenticate() answer the HTTP challenge; they do not automatically fill arbitrary forms, handle multifactor prompts, or create an application session. Inspect the network response or ask the site administrator which mechanism is enabled.

Choose the capture method
| Need | Best fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatable script or CI job | Playwright | Supplies HTTP credentials on a browser context and saves viewport or full-page screenshots. |
| Existing Puppeteer codebase | Puppeteer | Authenticates with page.authenticate(), then captures with page.screenshot(). |
| One-time loading diagnosis | Chrome DevTools | Shows screenshots at points in the Network timeline while the page renders. |
| Recurring server-side integration | Hosted API | Accepts an HTTP-authentication parameter, but requires a review of credential handling and authorization. |
There is no published benchmark establishing that one option is universally faster, safer or more compatible. Base your choice on repeatability, capture mode and where you are willing to handle secrets.
Playwright: a repeatable HTTP Basic Authentication screenshot
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the environment that will run the job:
npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Set credentials outside the source code, then create a context with httpCredentials. The following Node.js script captures a full page:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({
httpCredentials: {
username: process.env.SITE_USER,
password: process.env.SITE_PASSWORD
}
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://authorized.example/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Run it with temporary environment variables (use your platform’s secret store in CI):
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
SITE_USER='alice' SITE_PASSWORD='replace-me' node capture.js
Playwright documents the credential configuration in its network and HTTP authentication guide and screenshot options in the Page API.
Viewport, full page and element captures
Omit fullPage for the visible viewport. Set a deterministic viewport when pixel dimensions matter:

viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
httpCredentials: {
username: process.env.SITE_USER,
password: process.env.SITE_PASSWORD
}
});
To capture one component after authentication, locate it and use the locator screenshot API:
await page.locator('[data-testid="invoice"]').screenshot({ path: 'invoice.png' });
For pages whose content appears after navigation, wait for a meaningful selector rather than relying only on a fixed delay:
await page.goto('https://authorized.example/dashboard', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('#dashboard').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
If the page has animations, disable them with an injected style or wait for the animation to finish. A network-idle signal can remain delayed by analytics or streaming connections, so use a specific readiness element when possible.
Puppeteer: HTTP authentication and screenshots
Install Puppeteer and launch its bundled browser:
npm install puppeteer
Authenticate before opening the protected URL, then save the image:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.authenticate({
username: process.env.SITE_USER,
password: process.env.SITE_PASSWORD
});
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://authorized.example/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Puppeteer’s API describes page.authenticate(credentials) as providing credentials for HTTP authentication and documents page.screenshot() in the same Page API. Its authentication implementation turns on request interception behind the scenes, which can affect timing in a performance-sensitive capture. The Puppeteer screenshots guide covers additional capture options.
Chrome DevTools: capture screenshots during loading
DevTools is useful when you need to see what the protected page looks like at different loading stages rather than produce a repeatable artifact.

- Open the URL in Chrome and complete the HTTP Basic Authentication prompt.
- Open DevTools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Select the Network panel.
- Open Network settings and enable Capture screenshots.
- Reload the page while the Network panel is focused.
- Click timeline thumbnails to inspect the render at each recorded point.
The Chrome DevTools Network guide documents this workflow. These thumbnails are a diagnostic timeline, not an automated full-page screenshot pipeline; save a final image with browser automation when you need repeatable files.
Application login is a different workflow
If navigation returns a normal page containing a login form, authenticate through that form and preserve the resulting cookies in the same browser context. A simplified Playwright pattern is:
await page.goto('https://authorized.example/login');
await page.getByLabel('Username').fill(process.env.SITE_USER);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.SITE_PASSWORD);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: /sign in/i }).click();
await page.waitForURL('**/dashboard');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
Selectors, redirects, CSRF tokens, multifactor authentication and consent screens are site-specific. Do not replace this flow with httpCredentials unless the server actually issues an HTTP authentication challenge.
Credential and artifact security
- Read usernames and passwords from environment variables, CI secrets or a vault; never commit them.
- Use HTTPS and restrict outbound access from the capture worker.
- Set file permissions so only the required user or job can read screenshots.
- Scrub screenshots before sharing: authenticated pages may contain personal data, tokens or internal URLs.
- Rotate credentials used by automation and grant the least access needed.
- Log status codes and timing, not passwords or complete authorization headers.
A hosted service may require credentials to leave your network. Base64 or Base64URL encoding of username:password is encoding, not encryption; transport security, provider storage and access controls determine the actual protection.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts an Authorization header for protected requests, so it can fit a recurring server-side workflow when your security review permits sending the request through a hosted service. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current parameter list.
Basic cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookies, custom headers and an Authorization header, along with options such as full-page capture, a CSS selector, device presets, viewport and retina scale, custom JavaScript or CSS, waits, blocked requests, timezone and geolocation. It also supports PDFs, HTML/CSS-to-image, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

Troubleshooting checklist
The browser still shows a login prompt
Confirm that the URL is the protected origin and that the credentials are not empty. Check for a proxy or gateway issuing a second challenge on another host. Inspect the response headers for WWW-Authenticate; if they are absent, you probably need the site’s form login rather than HTTP credentials.
A 401 or 403 appears after authentication
A 401 usually means rejected, missing or differently scoped credentials. A 403 means the identity was recognized but lacks permission, or an upstream policy blocked the client. Verify the account manually, required path permissions, proxy rules and whether the server expects a different authentication scheme.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for a stable selector, fonts and images; use fullPage only after the page has laid out. Check console and network errors, lazy-loaded content and viewport-dependent behavior. Avoid an indefinite network-idle wait on pages with persistent connections.
The capture hangs or is slow
Set an explicit navigation timeout, identify requests that never finish, and block unnecessary third-party resources where your test allows. Puppeteer’s request interception during authentication may alter timing. For a hosted service, inspect its verdict and billing headers instead of retrying blindly.
Recommended Free Tools
The image contains sensitive data
Restrict artifact access, redact or delete files after review, and use a non-production account with representative data. Never paste credentials into a URL, issue tracker or chat transcript.

Operational guidance
For CI, pin the browser-library version, define a fixed viewport and timezone, and name output files with a build identifier. Capture a diagnostic trace or HTML only when policy allows it. Retry transient navigation failures with a bounded count and record the final HTTP status, URL and elapsed time. For large batches, control concurrency so the protected server is not overloaded and so screenshots do not exhaust memory.
Use DevTools when you are investigating a visual transition, Playwright or Puppeteer when the workflow belongs in code, and a hosted API only after its handling of credentials and private pages is approved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HTTP Basic Authentication mean the password is sent in plain text?
The Basic scheme encodes credentials in an Authorization header; encoding is not encryption. Use HTTPS and evaluate the server, proxy and credential-storage controls.
Can I use these methods with Digest or NTLM authentication?
Chromium supports several HTTP authentication schemes, but the exact browser-library configuration and platform behavior differ. Confirm the server challenge and consult the version-specific library documentation.
Why does a screenshot work locally but fail in CI?
Common causes are missing browser binaries, unavailable environment secrets, different proxy or DNS access, a changed viewport, or a server policy that blocks the CI network. Compare the response status and headers first.
