Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you want a private, organized catalog of your Audible books, use a documented library export or integration rather than writing a scraper. Audible’s license, last updated February 18, 2025, excludes data mining, robots, and similar data-gathering and extraction tools. Keep the project to personal organization, review the current terms, and do not bypass access controls. For a local library, export metadata with a tool such as OpenAudible, or use Libation’s documented Audiobookshelf handoff, then review and normalize the records before matching them in Audiobookshelf.
First decide what you mean by “scrape Audible”
There are two different projects that often get conflated: organizing information about books in your account, and obtaining or redistributing audiobook files. This guide is about the first. A catalog can help you find titles, track editions, and manage a private collection; it does not grant rights to share, resell, publish, or otherwise redistribute Audible content.
Audible’s license describes purchased content as licensed for personal and non-commercial use. It also says the license does not include data mining, robots, or similar data-gathering and extraction tools, and excludes certain collection and use of listings, descriptions, or prices. Those terms make direct automated scraping a compliance concern, not merely a technical choice. This is not a claim that every jurisdiction treats scraping the same way. Review Audible’s current license and conditions for your location, get permission where needed, and do not evade logins, CAPTCHAs, rate limits, or other access controls.
Separate metadata from audio files. An export of titles and identifiers is not an audio download, and a personal catalog does not change the permissions that apply to the recordings, cover art, or descriptions. Keep the resulting library private unless you have separate rights to publish its contents.

| OpenAudible export | A one-time or periodic catalog export | Its documentation describes export to a web page, JSON, CSV, or spreadsheet, and a books.json file for other applications. |
It is third-party software. Check its current release, account-handling behavior, terms, and security posture before signing in. |
| Libation with Audiobookshelf | A library workflow that hands books off to a self-hosted server | Libation documents optional automatic upload of each book to an Audiobookshelf server configured with a server URL and API token. | You need to configure and trust both the local software and the server integration; verify current behavior and terms before connecting an account. |
| Direct scraper | Custom catalog research only where you have permission | You control the schema and processing. | Audible’s license expressly excludes data-mining tools and similar extraction. Permission and terms review are essential; do not bypass access controls. |
| Audiobookshelf | A private, self-hosted destination | Audiobookshelf stores metadata in its database and metadata.json sidecars, can extract tags from audio files, and supports deliberate online matching. |
You operate the server, storage, backups, updates, and any third-party metadata providers. |
OpenAudible and Libation are independent third-party tools, not official Audible export services. Their features and account behavior can change; check the current project documentation and releases before use. If you only want a catalog, do not assume that an audio-file workflow is necessary.
Export and preserve your records
Export with a documented tool
For a catalog export, use OpenAudible’s documented export options and save a versioned JSON or CSV copy where you control the file. Its documentation also describes a books.json file intended for use by other applications. If you already use Libation and want Audiobookshelf to receive books automatically, follow Libation’s current setup instructions to configure the server URL and API token; do not paste an API token into a shared document or public repository.
Before signing in to either third-party application, review what it accesses, where it stores credentials or files, how it updates, and whether its current terms and security practices suit you. Export only the information you need. Keep an untouched copy of the export so later cleanup or matching can be reversed.
Retain identifiers and edition details
Use ASIN as a practical deduplication key when present, and retain ISBN where available. Do not deduplicate by title alone: the same work may have different narrators, editions, languages, or release versions. Keep the original record alongside your cleaned record, and record when and from where the information was obtained.

A useful local record can include:
- Identity: title, subtitle, ASIN, ISBN, edition, and source URL.
- Credits: author, narrator, publisher, series, and series position.
- Catalog details: release date, language, duration, genre, description, and cover reference where available.
- Provenance: retrieval timestamp, original export filename, and a note of any fields you changed.
Audiobookshelf’s documented metadata model includes fields such as title, series, position, genre, publisher, ISBN, ASIN, language, and description. Treat imported text and images as copyrighted material; retaining them for private organization does not itself grant a right to publish them.
Normalize locally before importing
Work on a copy of the export. Normalize whitespace and Unicode so visually identical titles do not split into duplicate records, but do not discard the raw value. Keep a small change log with the old value, new value, and reason—for example, correcting a narrator credit from a reliable edition record. This is particularly helpful if an online match later proposes a different title or author.
Keep the original export and cleaned catalog in a private location with ordinary account and device protections. If you are retaining audio files too, back up those files separately from the metadata; a CSV or JSON export is not an audio backup.
Load the catalog into Audiobookshelf carefully
Audiobookshelf is an open-source, self-hosted media server for audiobooks and podcasts. It stores metadata in a database and metadata.json sidecars, can extract tags from audio files, and provides tools to embed metadata and merge multiple audio files into an M4B. Those are library-management capabilities; they do not establish rights to acquire or share any particular recording.

Choose a folder structure that is understandable and consistent, such as Author/Series/Book, and follow the conventions for your own server configuration. A sidecar JSON file and cover image can sit alongside audio where your setup expects them. Avoid relying on a guessed folder convention: confirm how your Audiobookshelf library is configured and test with a small subset before reorganizing a large collection.
- Make a backup. Preserve the original export and any existing library database or sidecars before a bulk import or folder move.
- Choose a test set. Start with a few books that include different narrators, a series entry, and a title with an alternate edition if you have one.
- Import or connect the library. Use the current Audiobookshelf and export-tool documentation for the supported path. For Libation’s documented handoff, configure the Audiobookshelf server URL and API token in Libation.
- Inspect results. Check title, author, narrator, series and sequence, language, and edition against your local export before applying changes across the collection.
- Expand only after review. Once the test records and backup/recovery process are satisfactory, process the rest of the library.
Match online metadata manually
Audiobookshelf says matching a book against an online metadata provider is intentionally a manual action initiated by the server administrator or through the API. Its API documentation describes explicit matching using a provider and search fields such as title, author, ISBN, or ASIN. This design is useful for a careful catalog: a library scan should not silently replace fields you have already cleaned.
- Search by identifier first. Try ASIN or ISBN when available; a title-only search can return a different recording.
- Compare the edition. Check narrator, language, series position, and release details, not just the work’s title and author.
- Review proposed fields. Keep the existing local value when the provider result is less accurate for your edition.
- Apply selectively and keep a rollback path. Preserve sidecars or a database backup before accepting a broad set of metadata changes.
Use community metadata providers cautiously
Audiobookshelf supports custom metadata providers, but its documentation warns that community providers are not maintained by the Audiobookshelf team and have not been security-reviewed by that team. A provider may be convenient without being official or vetted. Review its source, permissions, maintenance history, and data handling before enabling it, especially on a server that contains account credentials or private files.
AudioSilo describes a browser-side import that accepts OpenAudible, Libation, Audiobookshelf, or folder-scan exports. Its import page says it checks ASINs and ISBNs, keeps the file in the browser, and sends lookup fields to its API. Treat this as an optional enrichment service, not an official Audible export route; read its current privacy and service terms before submitting any catalog data.

When is direct scraping appropriate?
For an Audible account library, the license language above is a reason not to build or run a bot without permission. If you have explicit permission for a separate catalog-analysis project, define the permitted pages and fields in advance, minimize requests, respect access controls and applicable terms, and retain only what the permission covers. The fact that data is visible in a browser does not by itself settle whether automated collection is allowed.
Do not use a scraper to defeat a CAPTCHA, conceal automation, evade throttling, or reach content your account cannot access. If the goal is simply to organize books you already have in a private catalog, the documented export and import workflow is the more direct approach.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an Audible library exporter or metadata scraper. If you have permission to capture a public catalog page as a visual reference, one GET request can return an image or PDF; a screenshot is not structured book data and cannot substitute for a library export. Do not use it to bypass access controls or automate access to restricted account pages. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.audible.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is on every plan. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try if what you actually need is a visual screenshot service rather than an Audible metadata export. Troubleshooting
The export is missing books or fields
Check the exporter’s current documentation and the account/library scope it supports; do not assume every format contains every field. Compare the exported catalog against the library view, retain the original file, and use a supported export or integration rather than adding an unauthorized scraper to fill gaps.

Audiobookshelf matched the wrong recording
Undo or restore the local metadata from your backup or sidecar. Re-run the match manually with an ASIN or ISBN, then verify narrator, language, and edition before accepting fields. A title-and-author match alone may identify the work but not the recording you own.
Series order or narrator information is inconsistent
Keep the raw export, distinguish series position from publication order where relevant to your catalog, and edit the local record deliberately. Do not let a provider’s result overwrite a more reliable edition-specific value without review.
A Libation upload does not reach the server
Verify the Audiobookshelf server URL, API token, network reachability, and the integration’s current setup requirements. Treat the token as a secret and rotate it if it was exposed. Test with one permitted item before relying on automatic handoff for a full library.
Recommended Free Tools
A custom provider behaves unexpectedly
Disable the provider and return to the last database or sidecar backup. Check its source and maintenance status before reinstalling; Audiobookshelf does not security-review community providers.
Privacy, reliability, and maintenance
A local catalog gives you control over organization, but it also makes you responsible for keeping it recoverable. Back up the export, Audiobookshelf database, sidecars, and any files you are entitled to store. Keep a dated copy before bulk matching, software upgrades, folder moves, or provider changes. Test restoring a backup rather than assuming that a copied database is usable.
Limit account access to trusted software and services, protect API tokens, and avoid uploading a full catalog to an enrichment service unless its data handling is acceptable to you. A catalog can reveal reading interests and account-related information even when it contains no audio. Store it accordingly.
