Short answer: do not build a scraper for Cars & Bids unless the company has given you written permission. Its Terms of Use, effective August 14, 2026, prohibit unauthorized spidering, scraping, harvesting, and manual or automated extraction, aggregation, or reproduction for commercial purposes, competitive analysis, AI/ML training, or any other purpose not expressly authorized. You can inspect a small number of public listings manually. For a structured, recurring, or redistributable dataset, ask Cars & Bids for an approved access method and written scope first.
This guide explains what the public pages display, how to conduct limited manual research, what to request in a permission application, how to model bids and listing claims, and how to capture authorized pages without confusing a screenshot with an approved data feed.
Why permission comes before code
The Cars & Bids Terms of Use list this prohibited conduct: “Engage in unauthorized spidering, scraping or harvesting of content or personal information, or use any other unauthorized automated means to compile information.” The same section also bars manual or automated processes that extract, aggregate, or reproduce site content for commercial purposes, competitive analysis, AI/ML training, or another purpose Cars & Bids has not expressly authorized. The terms further require prior written approval to use site content on another site, in a networked computer environment, or by linking or framing for any purpose.
These are contractual restrictions, not a technical challenge to solve with a different HTTP library. Do not rotate proxies, evade bot checks, automate a browser, probe hidden JSON, bypass rate limits, or treat an undocumented endpoint discovered in developer tools as permission. The wording is current as of the stated effective date, but site rules can change; reread the Cars & Bids Terms of Use before starting a project.

What to request
Send a written request to [email protected]. Ask the company to state, in writing:
- Whether automated access is allowed and which access method or feed it authorizes.
- Which fields you may collect, including active listings, completed auctions, bids, images, seller text, and vehicle specifications.
- Permitted collection frequency, rate limits, authentication, and whether historical data is included.
- How long you may retain the data and whether backups are covered.
- Whether you may publish, sell, share, or use the data for analytics or model training.
- Required attribution, deletion procedures, and a contact for operational support.
Those questions define a sensible approval request; they are not rights granted by the public pages. No public API or bulk feed was documented in the official pages reviewed here, so do not assume one exists until Cars & Bids confirms it.
What a visitor can see on an official listing
The public index and individual listing pages render information such as a vehicle title, headline vehicle attributes, auction status, a displayed current bid, and time remaining where available. The Newly Listed Auctions index is useful for finding pages to inspect. It is a presentation layer, not an approved dataset interface, and the example fields are not a guarantee that every listing uses the same schema.

- Listing URL and the date and time you viewed it.
- Displayed title, year, make, model, trim, mileage, location, and other presented specifications.
- Current bid and the displayed time remaining, with the currency (U.S. dollars).
- A status such as active, ended, sold, or not stated, exactly as shown.
- A note that the value is a seller-provided listing claim unless independently verified.
Cars & Bids says listing material comes from seller-provided or seller-confirmed information and is not independently verified for accuracy or completeness. Verify any safety, ownership, title, mileage, or mechanical fact through appropriate independent records before relying on it.
Safe workflow for a small research question
If you need to answer a one-off question about a handful of vehicles, keep the process manual and limited:
- Define the question. Specify the models, date range, fields, and whether you need only observation or permission to reuse the content.
- Open the official site. Use the index or the listing URL in a normal browser session. Do not run a crawler or paste a page’s hidden requests into a script.
- Read the rendered listing. Transcribe only the fields necessary for your question. Capture the page URL and observation time beside each value.
- Separate facts from claims. Label specifications and history as “seller-provided listing claim” unless another source verifies them.
- Treat bids as snapshots. A current bid can change before you finish reading. It is not a final sale price until the auction ends and the outcome is confirmed.
- Stop at the project boundary. Do not turn a manual sample into a recurring collection job or republish copied descriptions without written approval.
Bid rules to model—and their limits
The official Cars & Bids FAQ describes registration, visiting a listing, and using the Place Bid control. It says a submitted bid creates a card hold equal to 5% of the bid amount until the auction ends if the bidder does not win. The marketplace rules below were listed on the FAQ page reviewed September 29, 2026; check the live page before implementing validation.

The Cars & Bids Support page describes a buyer-fee hold of 5% with a $250 minimum and $7,500 maximum. The FAQ describes a hold on a submitted bid, while Support describes the buyer-fee hold range; preserve that distinction and verify the current wording with Cars & Bids before presenting a fee calculation as definitive.

Designing a compliant dataset after approval
Once you have written authorization, make the permission document part of your data governance. Store its date, permitted fields, endpoint or method, frequency, retention period, redistribution rights, and attribution requirements beside the project configuration.
Suggested record shape
listing_url,observed_at_utc, and an immutable internal record ID.title_displayed,specs_displayed, and a flag identifying seller-provided claims.bid_amount_usd,time_remaining_displayed, andauction_status.source_versionor capture reference if the agreement supplies one.permission_scopeandattribution_textso downstream users cannot mistake the data for an unrestricted feed.
Keep observations append-only when possible. A bid field should represent a value at a timestamp, not overwrite the history. For analytics, distinguish “last observed bid,” “auction ended,” and “final outcome confirmed.” Never infer a sale price from the last public bid alone.
Quality controls
- Validate that bid amounts are numeric U.S.-dollar values and retain the original displayed text.
- Store missing, hidden, and not-stated fields explicitly rather than converting them to zero.
- Detect a changed page layout before accepting records; an approved feed may be safer than parsing presentation HTML.
- Recheck listing status and time remaining near the end of an auction if your permission allows that frequency.
- Restrict access to personal information and delete it when the agreement requires.
What not to do
- Do not disguise a crawler as a normal visitor or defeat CAPTCHA, bot detection, consent controls, or access limits.
- Do not scrape a browser’s internal API calls merely because they are visible to you.
- Do not aggregate listings for a competing marketplace, commercial report, or machine-learning corpus without explicit written authorization.
- Do not copy seller descriptions, photographs, or personal information into a public database by default.
- Do not describe a manually observed bid as a guaranteed final price.

Troubleshooting an approved workflow
The company has not answered your request
Pause automated collection. A public page is not approval. Follow up with the exact fields, cadence, retention, and redistribution plan and ask whether an approved feed exists.
A listing has missing specifications
Store the field as not stated and retain the observation time. Do not fill gaps from another listing or infer a value from the title.
The displayed bid changed
Keep both observations with timestamps. Mark the auction as active until the page or an authorized source confirms its end and outcome.

Stop ingestion, preserve the failed sample, and ask Cars & Bids whether it can provide a stable authorized feed. Do not hunt for undocumented endpoints as a workaround.
