Bring Your Own Storage for Generated Assets: What It Means and How to Set It Up

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bring Your Own Storage (BYOS) means routing some data or generated files to a storage account you own and control. It is not one universal feature: a platform may support BYOS only for specific capabilities, or a generation workflow may need an added integration to save outputs to an object-storage bucket. Check exactly what the integration stores, where it applies, and how it is authorized before assuming every generated asset—or every related file—will land in your account.

What BYOS means for generated assets

BYOS is a data-routing and ownership pattern, not a standardized switch shared by every AI service. Depending on the product, it can mean connecting a customer-owned storage account to selected platform capabilities, or configuring a workflow to write generated files to a bucket. The feature may cover outputs, inputs, conversation state, model files, or only some of these.

That distinction matters when asking, “How do I save AI-generated images to my own storage?” The answer depends on the generator and the exact workflow. A storage connection documented for one capability does not establish that all files from the product use that storage. Nor does a project that adds S3-compatible save nodes to ComfyUI prove that every ComfyUI installation has cloud saving built in.

What to establish before setup

  • Scope: Which exact outputs or data types are routed, and which remain elsewhere?
  • Binding level: Is storage attached to an account, project, resource, capability, or workflow?
  • Access method: Does the service use managed identity and role-based access, or credentials configured in a workflow?
  • Operations: Can the binding be changed later, and what happens if the account or bucket is moved or deleted?
  • Recovery: How will you catalogue, back up, restore, and export the files?

Two documented approaches: Microsoft Foundry and ComfyUI

These examples show why BYOS cannot be treated as a single product feature. Microsoft Foundry documents storage connections for selected capabilities. ComfyUI can be extended with nodes that save and load files through an S3-compatible API, or deployed in an AWS architecture that writes post-inference output to S3.

Microsoft Foundry: connections for selected capabilities

Microsoft describes BYOS in Foundry as routing data produced by supported capabilities to an Azure Storage account the customer owns and governs. Its documented baseline for most features is a storage connection, which acts as a shared data pointer. Capability hosts can bind a feature—particularly Agents—to one of several connections. Speech and Language use a separate resource-level userOwnedStorage setting. See Microsoft’s Foundry guide to connecting your own storage.

Do not interpret this as “Foundry stores all generated assets in my bucket.” Microsoft’s architecture documentation distinguishes Microsoft-managed storage used for some direct file-upload cases from customer-connected Azure Storage used for supported operations such as evaluations and batch-processing input and output. In standard Agents setups, customer Azure resources can hold customer data including files, conversations, and vector stores. The actual storage arrangement depends on the capability and configuration. Microsoft Foundry architecture describes the distinction.

ComfyUI: add cloud storage to a workflow

The Backblaze Labs comfyui-cloud-storage project documents nodes to save generated images, video, and audio to an S3-compatible provider. It also documents loading image and audio assets, browsing bucket contents, generating sharing URLs, and downloading models. The listed providers are Backblaze B2, AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces, and Google Cloud Storage.

  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

This is an add-on approach: install the node package and configure the storage credentials or profile details, then use its nodes in the workflow. The project’s documentation describes intended functions and providers; it does not guarantee compatibility with every current ComfyUI version or provider configuration. Assess the project’s maintenance and security before putting it into production.

AWS documents another, deployment-specific pattern: ComfyUI post-inference output files are written from its output directory to an Amazon S3 bucket using an S3 CSI driver. That is an AWS deployment architecture, not a requirement for local ComfyUI users to adopt Kubernetes or AWS. See the AWS architecture example.

Choose an approach by feature coverage and control

There is no supported universal “best storage provider” ranking here. The documented examples do not compare price, reliability, performance, regional availability, or total cost. Choose based on the specific workflow and the access model you can operate safely.

Questions to answer before committing

  • Does the route cover generated output only, or also prompts, metadata, input assets, state, and models?
  • Can different projects or capabilities use different buckets or connections?
  • Are credentials scoped narrowly enough for the intended read and write operations?
  • How are generated sharing URLs controlled, and when do they expire?
  • Can you change or remove the storage binding without recreating a resource or disrupting a workflow?
  • What is the plan for retention, lifecycle rules, backup copies, restoration testing, and user exports?

Set up Microsoft Foundry storage carefully

Use the current Foundry guide for the exact capability you intend to configure; the steps and binding model differ between general storage connections and Speech/Language resources. The guide describes identity-based access and Azure role assignments, as well as storage-account hardening. For the documented Foundry setup, Microsoft specifies shared-key access disabled, minimum TLS 1.2, public blob access disabled, and recommends disabling cross-tenant replication. These are Microsoft’s requirements and recommendations for this setup, not universal defaults for every storage service.

  1. Confirm the capability and binding model. Check whether it uses a storage connection, a capability-host binding, or Speech/Language’s resource-level userOwnedStorage. Identify precisely which data that capability routes.
  2. Prepare the Azure Storage account. Apply the security settings specified in Microsoft’s guide, and decide the network rules and access scope appropriate to your environment.
  3. Configure identity and role assignments. Grant the relevant identity the documented access to the storage account. A role assignment or storage firewall rule that blocks the service can prevent access.
  4. Create and bind the connection where supported. For capabilities using connections, configure the connection and bind the relevant capability host if required. Do not assume one connection automatically covers every Foundry feature.
  5. Validate with the exact operation. Exercise the supported upload, batch, evaluation, or other capability and verify where its data is written. Check logs and permissions if access fails.
  6. For Speech/Language, decide before resource creation. Microsoft says the userOwnedStorage choice cannot be changed after resource creation without recreating the Foundry resource. Plan migration and recovery before creating a resource with this binding.

Microsoft’s Speech BYOS documentation describes system-assigned managed identity and RBAC for authorization, and says traffic between Speech and Storage uses the Azure global network. That statement applies to the documented Speech scenario; it should not be generalized to other Azure products or providers. See Microsoft’s Speech BYOS documentation.

Route ComfyUI output through a storage workflow

For ComfyUI, the practical pattern documented by the node project is to install the integration, configure a provider profile or credentials, and place the relevant save node in the workflow. Exact installation commands and configuration fields can change, so follow the project’s current instructions rather than copying a guessed command or assuming a particular credentials format.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
  1. Select the provider and bucket. Confirm it is one of the project’s documented S3-compatible providers and create a bucket or equivalent destination under your account.
  2. Review project setup and compatibility. Follow the repository’s installation and configuration instructions; check maintenance status and compatibility with your ComfyUI deployment before granting access.
  3. Configure credentials with limited scope. Use credentials restricted to the needed bucket and actions where the provider supports that model. Avoid embedding broad, long-lived credentials in workflows that may be shared.
  4. Add the appropriate save node. Connect the generated image, video, or audio output to the integration’s relevant node, then configure destination details using the project’s instructions.
  5. Run a small validation workflow. Confirm the file appears in the intended bucket and can be retrieved by the intended identity. Test sharing-link behavior separately from storage access.
  6. Document the operational path. Record how credentials are rotated, assets are restored, and files are exported if the integration or provider changes.

Or skip the browser setup

If the asset you need is a webpage screenshot, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server—not a general-purpose storage bucket or a way to route every AI generator’s files. A single GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its options include PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, custom CSS and JavaScript, full-page capture, and element capture. Its cookie-banner and popup removal can be turned off when needed.

Example cURL request (replace the URL and API key):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Security, reliability, and cost decisions

Protect access to the bucket

In the Microsoft Foundry and Speech scenarios, follow the identity and role guidance for the exact capability. Microsoft notes that storage firewalls and role assignments can block service access when configured incorrectly. For a ComfyUI node integration, review the project’s credential configuration and keep access scoped to the workflow’s needs. The cited ComfyUI project documents credential setup, but does not establish a universal security model for every provider.

Plan for reversibility and recovery

Storage routing does not by itself create a retention or disaster-recovery policy. Decide where prompts and workflow metadata will live, how lifecycle rules affect generated files, how backups are isolated, and how restoration will be tested. Establish how users export their assets and how public or signed links are governed. For Microsoft Speech and Language’s userOwnedStorage, Microsoft specifically warns that moving or deleting the bound storage account can interrupt the capabilities.

Estimate the real operating cost

The documented sources establish implementation patterns, not comparative pricing or performance. Before rollout, calculate the cost of storage, requests, transfer, retention, backups, and the compute or workflow infrastructure involved. Include any cost of maintaining integrations and credential rotation. Do not infer that BYOS makes generation free, reduces latency, or automatically lowers the bill.

Troubleshoot common BYOS failures

Foundry cannot access the storage account

  • Likely cause: The relevant identity lacks an assignment, or network and firewall rules deny access.
  • What to check: Verify the documented identity and role assignment for the capability, then inspect storage network rules. Avoid weakening public-access settings as a first response.

The expected Foundry files are not in the connected account

  • Likely cause: The operation uses a different storage path, or the capability is not bound to the connection you configured.
  • What to check: Revisit the architecture and capability-specific setup. Microsoft distinguishes managed storage for some direct upload cases from connected customer storage for supported operations.

Speech or Language stops working after a storage change

  • Likely cause: The bound account was moved or deleted, or the resource’s storage configuration no longer matches the intended setup.
  • What to check: Microsoft warns that moving or deleting the bound account can interrupt these capabilities, and changing userOwnedStorage requires resource recreation. Plan the supported recovery or migration path rather than assuming the property is editable in place.

ComfyUI save or load nodes fail

  • Likely cause: Incorrect credentials or profile configuration, provider mismatch, or incompatibility with the installed ComfyUI environment.
  • What to check: Confirm the project’s setup steps, provider details, and permissions; test with a narrowly scoped bucket and a small workflow. The project’s documented provider list is not a guarantee for every provider configuration.

AWS deployment output does not appear in S3

  • Likely cause: The deployment does not match the documented S3 CSI architecture, or its permissions and storage wiring differ.
  • What to check: Use the AWS architecture as a deployment-specific reference and validate its components in the environment where ComfyUI runs. Do not apply CSI-driver assumptions to a local installation.

FAQ

Does BYOS mean the provider cannot retain any data?

No such guarantee follows from the term alone. Establish separately which data the product routes to your account and what its documented behavior is for other storage, logs, or service data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an S3-compatible bucket with Microsoft Foundry?

The cited Foundry BYOS guidance describes Azure Storage connections. The cited S3-compatible integration is for the ComfyUI node project; it does not establish S3-compatible storage support for Foundry.

Does ComfyUI require Kubernetes to save generated files to cloud storage?

No universal requirement is established. The node project documents an integration for cloud save and load, while the AWS CSI-driver article is one deployment architecture.
