How to Copy a Request as cURL in Google Chrome

To copy a request as cURL in Chrome, open DevTools, select Network, reload the page or repeat the action that sends the request, then right-click its row and choose Copy > Copy as cURL. Paste the command into a shell or DevTools Terminal only after checking it: it may contain cookies, authorization values, or other session-specific data.

Copy one Chrome request as cURL

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Select Network in the DevTools action bar. DevTools records requests while the panel is open, so open it before you reload or trigger the request.
  2. If the request log is cluttered, clear it using the Network panel’s clear control. Clearing the log makes it easier to find the new request; it does not change the page or the requests themselves.
  3. Reload the page or repeat the specific action you want to inspect—for example, submitting a form or loading a particular view. The resulting traffic appears in the Network panel’s Requests table.
  4. Find the right row. Compare its method, URL, status, and initiator with the action you performed. If many requests appear, use the Network filter box or type filters to narrow the list.
  5. Right-click the request row, hover over Copy, and choose Copy as cURL.
  6. Paste the clipboard contents into a shell, script editor, or Chrome DevTools Terminal. Review the command before running it or sharing it.

Chrome’s Network reference describes the menu item as copying the request as a cURL command. No extension is required. The key prerequisite is that DevTools is open when the request occurs; opening it afterward does not recover traffic that was never recorded in the current log.

Choose the right request before copying

A page load can trigger many requests: the document itself, scripts, images, analytics, API calls, and background updates. Copying a nearby row is not necessarily copying the action you meant to reproduce. Use the request’s method and URL as your first clues, then inspect its status and initiator where needed.

When the request is hard to find

  • Clear the log and repeat only the action you need to capture.
  • Use the filter box to search for a distinctive part of the URL, or use available type filters to reduce unrelated traffic.
  • Check whether the action actually sent a network request. Some interactions update the page locally and will not create a new request.
  • If the request was sent before DevTools was open, repeat the action with the panel open.

One request, every request, or the filtered set

What you need Network menu choice What gets copied
A single request Copy > Copy as cURL on its row One cURL command representing that request.
Every request in the log Copy all as cURL A chain of cURL commands for all requests in the log.
Only the requests currently listed after filtering Copy all listed as cURL A chain for the listed, filtered requests.

Copying an entire log can produce a long command sequence and may include unrelated or sensitive requests. For debugging one API call, copying its individual row is usually easier to inspect and safer to share.

Inspect the copied command before running it

A copied cURL command is a replayable representation of a browser request, not just its URL. Depending on the request, it can include the HTTP method, request body, headers, cookies, and authorization-related values. Those details may be necessary to reproduce a session-specific failure, but they can also expose access to an account or private data.

  • URL and method: Confirm that the destination and operation are the ones you intended. A copied command can perform a state-changing request, not merely retrieve a page.
  • Cookies and authorization: Treat session cookies, bearer tokens, API keys, and similar values as secrets. Remove or replace them before posting the command in a public issue or chat.
  • Request body: Check for personal information, form contents, or data that could create or modify records if replayed.
  • Headers: Browser headers may help reproduce a request, but they are not all necessarily required. Avoid stripping values blindly when diagnosing a failure; make a copy first and change one thing at a time.
  • Repetition: Running a command again sends another request. Consider whether it could submit, delete, purchase, or otherwise change something before executing it.

Chrome’s DevTools Terminal workflow supports pasting and running the complete copied command. A regular terminal works too, provided the command’s quoting and syntax match that shell.

Use the copy format that matches your destination

Chrome’s Copy menu includes alternatives to cURL, including Copy as PowerShell, Copy as fetch, Copy as fetch (Node.js), response copying, stack-trace copying, and HAR export. Choose the format based on where you intend to continue debugging.

  • cURL: Useful for a shell-based reproduction or when you need a command-line representation of the request.
  • PowerShell: Prefer this when the destination is Windows PowerShell and the generated syntax is better suited to that environment.
  • fetch: Use the browser-oriented JavaScript form when moving the request into client-side debugging.
  • fetch (Node.js): Choose this when the next step is a Node.js script.
  • HAR export: Use an archive when you need a broader record of network activity rather than a single command. Review exported data for sensitive values before sharing it.

Menu labels and available formats can change between Chrome releases. If a label differs in your version, look under the request row’s Copy submenu and choose the closest destination-specific format.

Run a copied request from a terminal

For a simple retrieval request, the copied command can often be pasted directly into a compatible shell. The useful result is whether the terminal can reproduce the response outside the browser—not just whether cURL prints output. Compare the status and response with what you observed in DevTools.

  1. Paste the command into a private terminal window or a local script editor.
  2. Read the full command before execution, paying particular attention to the host, method, body, cookies, and authorization data.
  3. Run it in the shell for which it was generated or adapt its quoting to the shell you use.
  4. Compare the response with the browser request. If it differs, check whether the command still has the headers, cookies, and body needed for that particular request.

Do not assume a copied command is safe to run simply because Chrome generated it. It can repeat an operation with side effects, and credentials embedded in it can remain valid after you paste them elsewhere.

Windows quoting caveat

Everything curl notes a Chromium quoting bug that can cause commands generated by Chromium browsers on Windows to be incorrectly quoted. If a copied command fails there, inspect the quoting for the shell you are actually using and correct it before retrying. A command intended for one shell is not guaranteed to parse unchanged in another; PowerShell and POSIX-style shells have different quoting rules.

Troubleshooting: why the copied command does not work

The request is missing from the Network panel

Cause: DevTools was opened after the request occurred, the log was cleared, or the action did not generate network traffic. Fix: Open Network first, clear the log if useful, and repeat the action. If the page interaction is local-only, there may be no request to copy.

The wrong request was copied

Cause: The page generated multiple requests for one action. Fix: Narrow the log with filters, then verify the row’s method, URL, status, and initiator before using Copy as cURL.

The command fails immediately on Windows

Cause: The generated command may have quoting that does not work in the target Windows shell; Chromium’s Windows quoting issue is documented by Everything curl. Fix: Check the quotes and escaping in the command, or choose Copy as PowerShell if PowerShell is your destination. Do not treat a command copied for a POSIX shell as interchangeable with PowerShell syntax.

The command runs but returns a different result

Cause: The request may depend on cookies, authorization, headers, or a body that changed or expired after capture. The server may also respond differently outside the browser session. Fix: Compare the copied request details with the Network entry and verify that session values remain valid. Avoid sharing the command while doing so; it may contain credentials.

The command returns an error or an unexpected response

Cause: A request may require current session state, or rerunning a state-changing request may no longer be valid. Fix: Re-capture the request while signed in and repeat the workflow that creates it, then inspect the method, URL, body, and relevant headers. Do not repeatedly rerun a command that might change or duplicate data.

You need a reproducible record of more than one request

Cause: A single cURL command captures one request, while a workflow may depend on several. Fix: Use Copy all as cURL or Copy all listed as cURL for a chain, or export a HAR when a broader network record suits the debugging task. Filter first if you want to reduce unrelated traffic, and review the result for private data.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page rather than reproducing a browser request, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This does not copy a Chrome Network request; it is an alternative for capturing the page itself.

Here is a cURL example that saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
