How to Use App Store Data for Market Research

Use app-store data to test a specific market question, not as a single scoreboard. Start with first-party analytics for apps you control, define each metric’s denominator, and compare like with like across sources, territories, periods, and cohorts. Add third-party data for competitors only when needed, and label it as an estimate.

Start with a decision, not a dashboard

Write down the decision you need to make before collecting numbers. Useful questions include which discovery source appears to convert best, which territories may merit localization, whether a product-page change coincided with a conversion shift, or whether customers from different sources behave differently after downloading.

These are hypotheses to investigate, not causal conclusions. A dashboard can show that two measures moved together; it cannot, by itself, prove that a channel, country, or page change caused the result.

Build an acquisition funnel with clear denominators

Apple App Store Connect

For an app you own or have access to, App Store Connect can break acquisition down by App Store Search, Browse, app referrer, web referrer, and campaigns. You can filter further by territory and device. See Apple’s acquisition-source documentation.

Follow the funnel from impressions to product-page views to downloads, and calculate conversion only after confirming what the selected metric counts. Apple defines conversion rate as total downloads and pre-orders divided by unique-device impressions. Downloads include first-time downloads and redownloads, so do not describe total downloads as new customers. Apple’s metric definitions are the place to verify the exact current meaning.

When reporting a rate, name the numerator and denominator, use a matching time period, and preserve the source category. A percentage without those details can disguise differences in how impressions or downloads were counted.

Google Play

Google Play reporting can support acquisition analyses by country, retained installers, buyers, and revenue per user. However, the official acquisition page available for these concepts explicitly documents a legacy report that was removed from the console in 2020. Use it to understand metric concepts, not as current UI directions: Google Play acquisition report documentation.

Segment results to find market differences

Break results down only along dimensions that help answer the decision question: territory, device, acquisition source, date range, category, and business model. Apple cohort tools can follow groups by download date, source, or offer start date. Eligible categories and business models may also have peer benchmarks. Consult Apple’s App Store Connect Analytics overview for available views and qualifications.

A territorial difference is a clue, not an explanation. It might reflect localization, pricing, acquisition mix, product fit, or data availability. Store analytics alone may not identify which factor is responsible. Treat a promising segment as a reason to investigate further rather than proof that a market will perform similarly after investment.

Connect acquisition to retention and revenue

Where available, connect source and cohort data to proceeds, paying users, subscriptions, retention, and usage. Apple’s Analytics Reports API includes purchase data attributed to download sources and subscription lifecycle events, and reports can be exported for offline analysis. See Apple’s Analytics Reports API overview.

Google Play’s legacy reporting documentation describes buyer and retained-installer cohorts and revenue-per-user analysis by channel or country. Buyer measures require financial permissions. Because the cited page is legacy, verify the current reporting options in your Play Console rather than relying on its old interface instructions.

Account for privacy, thresholds, and missing data

Apple usage measures include only users who agreed to share diagnostics and usage data. Some source information also requires minimum thresholds, and certain metrics depend on app features or enough qualifying events. Apple says some metrics become available after at least five first-time downloads or pre-orders; download metrics also require at least five first-time downloads. These are availability thresholds, not market benchmarks.

A low-volume segment may therefore be unavailable or suppressed. Missing data does not mean zero activity, and an observed rate from a small or selectively measured group may not represent the full audience. Check the metric reference and Analytics overview before designing a study around a measure.

Use competitor data as an estimate, not a census

Your developer console generally describes apps your account can access, not the whole category. Competitor research may require public store-listing observations or third-party app-intelligence services. Such figures are modeled estimates, not actual publisher-reported downloads or revenue.

For example, a 2025 Sensor Tower report methodology excerpt describes estimates for Apple App Store and Google Play, with downloads counted per Apple or Google account during the report period. That limited methodology should not be generalized to other reports, providers, years, regions, or app categories. For every estimate, record:

  • The provider and report or product.
  • Stores and countries or regions covered.
  • The date range and update cadence.
  • What counts as a download and what revenue includes.
  • Whether the figure is modeled or directly reported.

Do not imply precision that the provider’s method does not establish. State who produced the number and what it represents.

Make comparisons on matching axes

Before comparing platforms, apps, territories, cohorts, or vendors, align the definitions that can change the answer:

  • Store, country, and region.
  • Measurement period and update cadence.
  • Funnel stage and denominator: impressions, page views, downloads, retained installers, or buyers.
  • Cohort window and attribution rules.
  • Business model and revenue definition, such as sales, proceeds, in-app purchases, or subscriptions.
  • Source type: first-party reporting or third-party estimate.
  • Privacy thresholds, opt-in coverage, and suppressed or grouped values.

If two platforms define a measure differently, show their series separately. A side-by-side chart does not make unlike metrics equivalent.

A practical workflow for a market-research question

  1. Write the decision question. Specify what action the analysis might inform and what evidence would make a difference.
  2. Choose the owned-app data first. In App Store Connect, use App Analytics acquisition sources for apps in your account and inspect the source, territory, and device filters that fit the question.
  3. Document metric definitions. Record the exact metric, numerator, denominator, date range, and whether downloads include redownloads.
  4. Segment and compare cohorts. Use consistent periods and cohort rules; do not infer a cause from a difference alone.
  5. Connect acquisition to downstream outcomes. Where available, examine retention, usage, proceeds, paying users, and subscriptions for the same groups.
  6. Add competitor estimates only to fill the market-context gap. Label provider, period, coverage, and method, and keep estimates distinct from first-party measurements.
  7. Record limitations with the result. Note privacy-related gaps, thresholds, mismatched definitions, and any legacy reporting source used.

Capture store pages for qualitative context

Analytics tells you how your app is discovered and how measured cohorts perform; it does not explain every store-page choice a competitor makes. Screenshots of public listing pages can help document visible creative, messaging, and localization at a particular point in time. Keep the capture date, market, and device context with your notes, and do not treat a listing image as evidence of downloads or revenue.

If you are gathering page screenshots programmatically, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and supports options such as viewport or device presets, full-page capture, and custom CSS. See ScreenshotNeo for the service details.

Or skip the browser setup

For a page capture, one GET request can return an image. This cURL example captures a public store page; replace the URL with the page you want to document. API options and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot misleading or unavailable results

  • A source or territory is missing: Check whether the metric has a minimum-volume threshold or is suppressed for privacy; do not interpret the blank as zero.
  • Conversion appears inconsistent: Verify the exact definition, including unique-device impressions and whether the download measure includes pre-orders, first-time downloads, or redownloads.
  • One platform seems to outperform another: Confirm that store, geography, period, attribution, and denominator match. If definitions differ, report separate series.
  • Usage is lower than downloads suggest: Usage reporting is opt-in constrained and may not cover every downloader; it is not necessarily a complete census.
  • Google Play instructions do not match the console: The cited acquisition report page describes a report removed in 2020. Treat it as conceptual guidance and check the present console for available reports.
  • A competitor estimate conflicts with a public claim: Check provider, store coverage, geography, period, download counting, and revenue basis. Do not substitute the modeled figure for publisher-reported facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can App Store Connect show competitor downloads?

No. Its analytics concern apps your account owns or can access; competitor download figures require separate market-intelligence estimates or other public observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a higher conversion rate prove that a product-page change worked?

No. It shows an association in the measured period. Other changes or shifts in audience mix may explain the difference, so the dashboard alone does not establish causality.

Are App Store and Google Play metrics directly comparable?

Not automatically. Compare them only after checking definitions, attribution, periods, and denominators; keep series separate when those differ.
