The practical answer: create a scheduled HTTP or HTTPS check through a monitoring API, define exactly what counts as success, run it from locations that represent your users, and route failures to an actionable alert. Check the status code and latency, but also validate expected content for important endpoints. If the site’s behavior depends on JavaScript, a browser session, or a multi-step journey, use a scripted synthetic monitor instead of a basic uptime check.
What API-based website monitoring actually does
An API monitor is a recurring request plus rules for interpreting the response. A typical check stores a URL, method, port, headers, authentication, timeout, interval, probe locations, and alert destinations. The service executes that definition repeatedly and records availability, response time, and (where supported) TLS or certificate state.
Google Cloud public uptime checks, for example, can issue HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP requests from multiple locations. They support paths, ports, headers, authentication, and required response content; redirects are followed and the final response is evaluated. DigitalOcean exposes API operations to create, edit, delete, list, and read the state of uptime checks and alerts. Uptime.com documents scheduled HTTP(S) checks for public websites and API endpoints, including response-code validation, probe locations, custom headers, and access tokens.
The monitor does not make a vague “is it online?” judgment. You define a contract such as “GET /health must return 200 within 2 seconds and contain "status":"ok".” That contract determines whether an alert is useful or noisy.

Design the check before creating it
1. Select a deterministic target
Use the public homepage when you need a broad availability signal, but prefer a small health endpoint for routine checks. A route such as /health or /ready should avoid expensive database queries and return a predictable response. Add separate checks for business-critical routes, such as a catalog API or authenticated service, rather than making one check responsible for every failure mode.
2. Specify the complete request
- URL and protocol: choose the exact host, path, and HTTP or HTTPS scheme. Include a port when the service is not on the default port.
- Method and body: use GET for read-only health endpoints; use POST only when a safe, idempotent test endpoint exists.
- Headers: set an
Acceptvalue and any required version, tenant, or authorization headers. - Authentication: keep tokens in the monitoring provider’s protected secret configuration. Never commit credentials to source control or place them in a public URL.
- Timeout and redirects: choose a timeout that reflects the endpoint’s contract and know whether the provider evaluates the final response after following redirects.
3. Define success stronger than “HTTP 200”
A server can return a 200 response containing an application error, an empty shell, or a proxy-generated page. Require the expected status code and, for important checks, a known string or JSON field. For example, assert status 200 plus a JSON field named status with value ok. Keep assertions stable: do not match a timestamp, rotating token, or marketing copy.
4. Choose locations and frequency
Select probe regions where customers and critical dependencies actually exist. Multiple locations help distinguish a regional network problem from a global outage. A one-minute interval detects incidents quickly but increases request volume and may raise cost or trigger rate limits; five-minute checks are often sufficient for low-risk pages. Coordinate the interval with your provider’s plan and the endpoint’s rate-limit policy.
5. Route useful alerts
Send alerts to email, chat, an incident-management system, or a webhook. Include the failing location, status code, latency, timestamp, and a short response excerpt when the provider supports it. Use a failure threshold or consecutive-failure requirement to avoid paging on one transient packet loss, while retaining a lower-severity event for the first failure.
Implement a simple monitor yourself
The following examples run a check from your own scheduler. They are useful for a small number of endpoints or as a local diagnostic; a managed service is better when you need distributed probes, retention, dashboards, and alert routing.

Python: status, latency, and JSON content assertion
import json
import os
import sys
import time
import requests
URL = os.environ.get("CHECK_URL", "https://example.com/health")
TIMEOUT = float(os.environ.get("CHECK_TIMEOUT", "10"))
start = time.perf_counter()
try:
response = requests.get(
URL,
headers={"Accept": "application/json"},
timeout=TIMEOUT,
)
elapsed_ms = round((time.perf_counter() - start) * 1000, 1)
payload = response.json()
ok = response.status_code == 200 and payload.get("status") == "ok"
print(json.dumps({
"url": URL,
"status_code": response.status_code,
"latency_ms": elapsed_ms,
"content_ok": ok,
}))
sys.exit(0 if ok else 1)
except (requests.RequestException, ValueError) as error:
print(json.dumps({"url": URL, "error": str(error)}))
sys.exit(1)
Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests, set CHECK_URL, and run the script from cron, a CI scheduler, or your operating system’s task scheduler. Exit code 0 means the check passed; exit code 1 lets the scheduler or wrapper send an alert.
cURL: a lightweight probe
curl --fail-with-body --silent --show-error
--connect-timeout 5 --max-time 10
-H 'Accept: application/json'
https://example.com/health
For automation, pipe the response to a JSON parser and fail unless the expected field is present. Treat a successful TCP connection as insufficient evidence: TLS negotiation, the HTTP status, and the response body all matter.
Node.js: fetch with an explicit deadline
const url = process.env.CHECK_URL || 'https://example.com/health';
const controller = new AbortController();
const timer = setTimeout(() => controller.abort(), 10000);
const started = performance.now();
try {
const res = await fetch(url, {
headers: { Accept: 'application/json' },
signal: controller.signal
});
const body = await res.json();
const latencyMs = Math.round((performance.now() - started) * 10) / 10;
const ok = res.status === 200 && body.status === 'ok';
console.log(JSON.stringify({ url, status: res.status, latencyMs, contentOk: ok }));
process.exitCode = ok ? 0 : 1;
} catch (error) {
console.error(JSON.stringify({ url, error: error.message }));
process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
clearTimeout(timer);
}
Run it on a current Node.js release that includes the built-in fetch. Add retry logic only for diagnosis or a carefully bounded second attempt; retries can hide a real intermittent outage and can duplicate unsafe requests.

Use a provider API when you need checks and alerts to be reproducible infrastructure rather than a hand-maintained cron job. Compare providers on these concrete capabilities:
| Capability | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle API | Can you create, update, delete, list, and read check state without using the web console? |
| Protocols and depth | Does it support HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, and browser or scripted tests? Are request bodies and content assertions available? |
| Probe geography | Are locations close to your users, and can checks reach a private network when required? |
| Signals | Are latency, uptime, SSL expiration, certificate errors, redirects, and response content reported separately? |
| Alerting | Can failures reach webhooks, chat, email, and incident tools with escalation and deduplication? |
| Operations | How long are results retained? Are dashboards, audit logs, rate limits, and usage costs clear? |
Google Cloud emphasizes regional HTTP/HTTPS/TCP checkers, response validation, and separate synthetic monitors. DigitalOcean emphasizes URL or IP health, latency, uptime, SSL certificates, and API-managed alerts. Uptime.com focuses on scheduled HTTP(S) checks, response-code validation, locations, custom headers, and access tokens. Availability of a feature can depend on the provider’s edition and account configuration, so verify it in the current documentation before standardizing.

Basic uptime checks cannot prove a working web app
Google Cloud states: “Uptime checks don’t load page assets or run JavaScript.” A basic HTTP check can therefore pass while a JavaScript-rendered interface is broken, a client-side route fails, a login flow cannot complete, or checkout is unusable. It also will not reveal a problem that occurs only after several clicks.
Use a browser-capable or scripted synthetic monitor for those cases. A useful journey might open the site, sign in with a test account, search for an item, add it to a cart, and verify a confirmation element. Keep test accounts, payment sandboxes, and cleanup actions isolated from production data. Run a simple endpoint check as well; the two layers answer different questions and make diagnosis faster.
Troubleshoot failures without creating alert fatigue
Every location fails
Check the origin, DNS, certificate chain, load balancer, and recent deployments. Compare the monitor’s response with a direct request from a trusted machine. If both fail, fix the service before changing thresholds.
Only one region fails
Investigate regional routing, CDN configuration, firewall rules, and provider-specific egress ranges. Do not immediately raise the global failure threshold; a regional outage may be affecting real customers.
HTTP 200 but the application is broken
Add a stable content or JSON assertion, or create a dedicated health endpoint that reports dependency readiness. A status-code-only check is too weak for this failure mode.

Confirm the canonical URL and whether redirects are followed. Supply the required authentication and headers through protected secrets. Ensure a bot-defense product is not blocking the monitor’s documented probe ranges, and avoid weakening security controls solely to make a check pass.

Measure latency by location, inspect server and gateway logs, and compare the interval with your rate limit. Increase the timeout only when the endpoint’s normal service objective justifies it. Use consecutive-failure rules and a maintenance window for planned changes.
TLS or certificate errors
Check certificate expiration, hostname coverage, intermediate certificates, and the server’s supported protocol configuration from outside your network. Renew before the monitor’s warning threshold, not after clients begin failing.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
- Endpoint cost: keep health routes cheap and cache-safe; a monitor should not trigger a full report, export, or write operation every minute.
- Probe volume: multiply interval, number of locations, and number of checks before estimating requests and provider charges.
- False positives: require more than one signal for paging when a transient network event is common, but preserve raw failures for diagnosis.
- Secrets: rotate monitor credentials, scope them to read-only or test resources, and audit who can retrieve them.
- Change control: define checks as code where possible, review assertion changes, and test alert delivery before an incident.
- Observability: retain latency percentiles and status history, not only a binary uptime percentage. A slowly degrading endpoint often precedes an outage.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo for rendered-page checks
If your monitoring question is visual—whether a page renders correctly after JavaScript, consent dialogs, popups, or chat widgets load—ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client perform captures. Features include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user-agent and Authorization settings, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

FAQ
Should I monitor a homepage or a health endpoint?
Use both when they answer different risks: a cheap health endpoint for service availability and a homepage or browser journey for user-visible rendering.
How many probe locations are enough?
Start with locations representing your largest user groups and critical dependencies, then add regions where incidents have meaningful business impact.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an API monitor a private service?
Only if the monitoring system has an approved path into that network, such as a private probe or connector; a public checker cannot reach an internal address by itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 200 response guarantee uptime?
No. A 200 response can contain an application error or incomplete payload; pair the status assertion with stable content or JSON validation.
What is the difference between uptime monitoring and synthetic monitoring?
Uptime monitoring evaluates a request such as HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP. Synthetic monitoring runs a scripted or browser-based journey, including JavaScript and user actions.
How should monitor credentials be stored?
Use the provider’s protected secret store or an equivalent secret manager, scope credentials narrowly, rotate them, and keep them out of source code and public URLs.
