1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo fill forms automatically, save your contact, address, payment or login details in a browser or password manager, then select the suggested value when the field is recognized. Autofill is not guaranteed: the browser, your settings and region, saved data, and the website’s field labels and markup all affect whether a value appears. Always review populated values before submitting.

- Contact and address autofill: names, email addresses, telephone numbers and shipping or billing addresses.
- Payment autofill: card details and, in some browsers and regions, other payment information.
- Password-manager autofill: usernames, passwords and sometimes one-time codes.
- Passwordless authentication: passkeys, security keys or biometrics. These authenticate you; they do not generally fill ordinary address or checkout fields.
Chrome says saved categories can include passwords, addresses, contact information, identity documents and travel data, although availability varies by platform and region. See Chrome’s autofill help.
How to fill a form automatically
1. Save the information you actually need
In your browser’s settings, open the section usually named Autofill, Passwords or Payment methods. Add a profile for your name, email, phone and address. Add payment cards only if the device and browser account are protected with a screen lock or equivalent authentication.

2. Open the form and select a suggestion
Click or tap a field. A dropdown may show a saved profile, address, card or login. Select the matching entry; the browser fills related fields. Some browsers require an extra click, biometric check or account sign-in before revealing sensitive values.
3. Review every populated value
Check spelling, apartment or unit numbers, country, phone number, card expiry and shipping address. Correct any field manually. Autofill should not silently submit the form; W3C guidance recommends a visible review step and a straightforward way to clear saved data.
4. Submit only after validation
Look for the site’s validation messages and confirm that the order, account or request is going to the intended recipient. A browser can insert an old address or a value that does not match the site’s required format.
Why autofill does not work on a website
The field is not identifiable
Browsers infer purpose from labels, names, structure and other signals. Chrome warns that it may fail to detect some fields even on secure websites. A developer may have used a generic name such as field1, rendered a control without a label, or placed inputs in an unusual widget.

Open the browser’s saved-data manager and check that the country, address, email and phone are current. Delete duplicates and update expired cards. Different browser profiles can contain different data.
The browser, device or region differs
Autofill categories and protection prompts are not identical across browsers, operating systems or regions. A feature available on a desktop may be absent on a mobile device, and an account may not sync unless synchronization is enabled.
The site deliberately limits filling
Some fields, especially verification codes, sensitive identity data or payment controls supplied by a third-party provider, may be designed for manual entry. Password managers can also decline to fill on an unfamiliar domain or an insecure page.
A browser extension or page script interferes
Try a private window, another browser profile or temporarily disabling extensions. If the field fills there, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. Private browsing is also useful when you do not want temporary data retained.

How website developers make forms autofill-friendly
Use the autocomplete vocabulary
Declare each field’s purpose with an appropriate autocomplete token. W3C’s Identify Input Purpose guidance explains that machine-identifiable purposes help browsers and assistive technologies recognize fields.
<label for="email">Email address</label>
<input id="email" name="email" type="email" autocomplete="email">
<label for="given-name">First name</label>
<input id="given-name" name="given-name" autocomplete="given-name">
<label for="postal-code">Postal code</label>
<input id="postal-code" name="postal-code" autocomplete="postal-code">
For addresses, use tokens such as street-address, address-line1, address-level2, address-level1, country and postal-code as appropriate. For accounts, use username, current-password and new-password. For payment forms, use tokens such as cc-name, cc-number, cc-exp and cc-csc when your payment architecture permits them.
Pair every control with a visible label
Associate a <label> with the input’s id, use stable name values, and provide concise instructions and error text. Chrome states that Autofill and Password Manager rely partly on labels and names selected by site developers. W3C’s Forms Tutorial also recommends requesting only information needed for the process; shorter forms reduce entry and correction work.
Group related controls
Use fieldsets and headings for shipping, billing and contact sections. Keep the DOM order logical, and do not replace native inputs with unlabeled canvas controls. If a custom component is necessary, expose its role, value and purpose to assistive technology.

Do not auto-submit after filling
Let the person inspect the values and activate the submit button. W3C’s H98 technique identifies user review, clearing saved data and private browsing as important considerations. Omitting autocomplete is not a reliable way to disable filling because browsers and extensions may still use heuristics.
Accessibility requirements that affect autofill
Correct input purposes reduce repeated typing and can help people with cognitive or motor disabilities. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.3.7, Redundant Entry, says information already supplied during a process should be auto-populated or available for selection, except where re-entry is essential, security-related or no longer valid.
For authentication, WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.3.8, Accessible Authentication, limits cognitive-function tests such as remembering a password unless an alternative or assistance mechanism exists. Permit browser and third-party password-manager filling for correctly identified username and password fields, and permit pasting verification codes unless a justified alternative is provided.
Choosing where your data should live
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in browser autofill | Everyday names, addresses, payments and basic logins in one browser ecosystem | Recognition varies by site; device, account-sync and regional features differ |
| Separate password manager | Credentials across multiple browsers or devices, with dedicated vault controls | Compatibility depends on field markup and extension or app permissions |
| Site account/profile | Repeat purchases or applications on one service | Works only on that site; review deletion, sharing and account-recovery controls |
Compare options by supported field types, cross-device availability, review and deletion controls, device authentication, compatibility with the target site, and regional support. No single method fills every field reliably.

Privacy and security checklist
- Save only data you are comfortable storing on that device or account.
- Protect the device with a strong passcode, biometric lock or equivalent.
- Use the browser’s saved-data controls to review and delete old addresses, cards and credentials.
- Expect an identity check before saved passwords or payment details are revealed; Chrome documents account authentication and facial or fingerprint recognition as examples.
- Review the destination, amount and recipient before submitting.
- Use private browsing on shared devices and sign out of synchronized profiles when appropriate.
- Never assume that disabling an HTML attribute prevents all extensions or browser heuristics from filling a field.
Testing a form without repeatedly configuring a browser
For visual QA, capture the page after you have tested its labels, autocomplete tokens and validation states. ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; it removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and reports whether a response was billed.
Or skip the browser setup:
Use the API with an access key (the complete option list is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/form -o form.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/form"}, timeout=90)
open("form.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/form' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, while an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No suggestion appears: verify the saved profile, click inside the field, then test a standard browser window and a private window.
- Only some fields fill: correct the site’s labels,
namevalues andautocompletetokens; custom widgets often expose incomplete semantics. - Wrong value fills: edit or remove duplicate saved profiles and check the browser account currently in use.
- Password manager refuses: confirm the domain, unlock the vault and ensure the username and password controls are real, labeled inputs.
- Verification code cannot be pasted: remove unnecessary paste blocking and provide an accessible alternative consistent with WCAG authentication guidance.
- Form submits unexpectedly: remove scripts that submit on change or after autofill; require an explicit submit action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I force every browser to autofill a field?
No. You can provide accurate labels, names and autocomplete tokens, but each browser and password manager decides whether to recognize and fill a control.
Should a checkout form disable autocomplete for security?
Disabling autocomplete is not a complete privacy or security control because browsers and extensions may still use heuristics. Protect sensitive data with appropriate authentication and let users review values before submission.
Is autofill the same as a passkey?
No. Autofill enters saved data such as addresses or credentials. A passkey is a passwordless authentication method used to prove control of an account.
