API migration

Migrating From Decodo to a Web Scraping API

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migrate Decodo by preserving your application’s data contract, not by swapping one URL for another. First inventory the requests and outputs your scraper relies on; then put the new provider behind an adapter, map targets and controls explicitly, compare both providers on the same workload, and shift traffic gradually. A successful HTTP response is not enough: required fields must validate, and you need to understand the replacement’s block rate, latency, and cost per usable record before cutover.

Why a Decodo migration needs an adapter

Decodo’s Web Scraping API accepts a task-oriented request. Its documented example sends a POST to https://scraper-api.decodo.com/v1/tasks, with an authorization header and JSON fields including target, url, proxy_pool, headless, and locale. A replacement may use different names, request methods, response envelopes, and error semantics. Replacing the endpoint throughout application code can therefore break parsers, retry logic, and downstream consumers even when the new service can fetch the same page.

Decodo describes its API as supporting real-time extraction without geo-restrictions, CAPTCHAs, or IP blocks. Its product page also advertises 100+ pre-built templates, JavaScript rendering, geo-targeted proxy pools, and outputs such as HTML, JSON, CSV, XHR, PNG, and Markdown. Those are vendor product claims, not a guarantee that a given target will return the fields or format your workload needs. Treat them as capabilities to verify against your own URLs and schemas.

The migration goal is to preserve a provider-neutral result shape inside your application. Provider-specific request construction and response parsing belong in one adapter per provider; business logic should consume only your normalized records.

1. Freeze the Decodo contract before changing code

Make an inventory from production configuration, request logs, and parser code. Record the exact inputs and assumptions for each workload rather than treating every request as the same kind of scrape.

  • Target and URL: Decodo template or target name, URL construction rules, query parameters, pagination, and any target-specific request fields.
  • Access and routing: credential source, proxy pool or tier, requested country, locale or language, and any session or cookie behavior.
  • Rendering: whether JavaScript or headless rendering is enabled, device or browser assumptions, and any wait condition or delay used before extraction.
  • Output contract: requested format and the fields, types, encodings, and nullability downstream code expects. Note which fields come from Decodo and which your own parser derives.
  • Reliability: timeouts, retryable error classes, retry backoff, concurrency, pagination checkpoints, and how duplicate work is avoided.
  • Economics: request volume by target, rendering mode, and proxy tier; successful-record rate; and any caps or rate limits the application depends on.

Decodo’s official Python SDK README can also help identify the target names and request semantics currently used by your integration: it describes a typed client with validated targets and IDE autocomplete, covering Google, Amazon, TikTok, ChatGPT, and 50+ additional targets. Treat the SDK’s taxonomy as an inventory aid, not proof that a different provider has equivalent templates.

2. Define the stable schema your application will keep

Choose a normalized result shape based on what your downstream jobs actually consume. Keep provider request details out of that shape. A search result scraper might normalize a record into fields such as source_url, title, items, fetched_at, and provider_status; an e-commerce parser may need a different domain schema. The names below are examples for an internal envelope, not Decodo or replacement-provider response fields.

Concern Keep stable in your application Translate inside the adapter
Target Your own task or dataset identifier Decodo target/template name or the replacement’s endpoint, if supported
Location and rendering The requested country, language, and rendering requirement Provider-specific proxy, locale, browser, or JavaScript parameters
Result Your validated record fields and types Provider response envelope, output format, and parser mapping
Outcome A small internal status vocabulary, such as usable, retryable, or terminal Provider-specific HTTP status, challenge signals, and error codes

Do not silently coerce incompatible values just to make records look alike. If one provider returns a missing field as null and another omits it, decide what your schema means and normalize deliberately. Preserve raw responses in a restricted diagnostic store when permitted by your data-handling rules; they are valuable when a mapping fails, but they can contain sensitive page data.

3. Map targets and behavior, not just parameter names

For each Decodo target, decide whether the replacement has a specialized template with equivalent semantics, or whether a generic URL fetch plus your own parser is acceptable. A template that shares a label with Decodo is not necessarily equivalent in field coverage, pagination, output shape, or maintenance. Record each mapping as supported and tested, supported with a parser change, or unsupported; do not route an important workload through an assumed match.

Translate these controls explicitly and test their effective behavior:

  • JavaScript: confirm whether the replacement renders scripts, and how you wait for content. A static HTML fetch and a rendered browser page are not interchangeable for dynamically loaded fields.
  • Geography and proxy tier: map requested country and proxy class separately. Test guarded targets using the intended pool rather than assuming the default pool has the same access behavior.
  • Locale: map language or locale settings and compare the returned page, not just the request accepted by the API. Site content can vary with both location and language.
  • Output format: determine whether the new service returns rendered HTML, structured JSON, CSV, or another representation, and whether parsing is provided or remains yours to maintain.
  • Pagination and sessions: verify how continuation state, cookies, or repeated page requests work. Preserve checkpoints in your own job system so a provider switch does not restart expensive batches unnecessarily.

4. Put request and response differences behind provider adapters

A safe migration keeps the queue and application-facing function stable while substituting an implementation behind it. Because the replacement provider is not specified here, there is no honest universal replacement URL or request body to provide. The following Python example is runnable as a local contract test: it shows a normalized task, a Decodo-shaped request builder using only the documented fields, and validation that must happen before a result is counted. Add the replacement’s real request builder and response parser from its current API documentation; do not copy Decodo parameter names into it unless that provider documents them.

               if field not in data or data[field] is None]
    return NormalizedResult(
        task_id=task.task_id,
        provider=provider,
        status="usable" if not missing else "incomplete",
        data=data,

    task = ScrapeTask(
        task_id="catalog-001",

    result = validate_result(task, "replacement", {"title": "Catalog", "items": []})
    print(result.status, result.missing_fields)

This example deliberately does not pretend to be a complete live Decodo integration: no credential syntax, response envelope, replacement vendor, or replacement endpoint is specified here. Use each provider’s current documentation for authentication, exact country and proxy fields, request submission and result retrieval, and error parsing. Keep secrets in your runtime’s secret manager or environment configuration rather than source code.

5. Shadow traffic before production cutover

Send the same representative input corpus to Decodo and the candidate provider while keeping the existing production result authoritative. Include normal pages, important templates, geo-sensitive URLs, JavaScript-heavy pages, pagination cases, and URLs that have historically triggered blocks or incomplete results. Compare normalized outcomes after parsing, not merely raw HTTP responses.

  1. Fix the corpus and conditions. Record URLs, target, requested country and locale, render mode, and time window. Keep the inputs identical between providers; note that live pages can change between requests.
  2. Run both paths safely. Use a limited shadow volume first. Avoid uncontrolled duplicate side effects, and check that parallel requests comply with the sites’ acceptable-use and data-handling requirements.
  3. Measure useful outcomes. Compare required-field completeness, parse validity, block or challenge indicators, encoding, response size, latency percentiles, and retry counts by target and mode.
  4. Calculate effective cost. Divide total provider cost for each workload slice by usable records, not by requests submitted. Separate JavaScript-rendered and premium-proxy traffic from simpler requests.
  5. Investigate discrepancies. Sample raw responses for mismatches, classify them as target coverage, geography, rendering, parser, or transient reliability issues, and update the adapter or mapping before widening traffic.

Do not treat HTTP 200 as successful extraction. Define success as the required fields passing validation and any domain-specific checks your consumers rely on. Similarly, do not count a provider error as a failed record automatically if your retry policy can recover it; report first-attempt and final outcomes separately.

Or skip the browser setup

If a Decodo workload only needs a visual page capture rather than structured scraped fields, ScreenshotNeo may be a simpler fit. It is a website screenshot API, not a drop-in replacement for Decodo’s templates, structured extraction, or proxy-target controls. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; here is the supplied cURL example, with its API details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000, and every feature is available on every plan. See ScreenshotNeo for the product. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.

6. Shift traffic in stages and keep rollback possible

Once the shadow comparison meets your quality and cost thresholds, route a small, observable share of eligible jobs through the new adapter. Increase the share only after reviewing metrics for all important targets, not just the aggregate. Maintain a rollback switch so new tasks can return to Decodo without changing the normalized schema or downstream consumers.

Keep retry decisions provider-aware inside the adapter, but consistent at the application boundary. Use bounded retries with backoff for transient failures, and avoid retrying deterministic problems such as unsupported targets or invalid parameters. Preserve pagination checkpoints and make task processing idempotent so retries or rollback do not create duplicate records. Classify a job as complete only after the record validates; retain a terminal or incomplete status for cases that require manual review or a mapping change.

Cost, rate limits, and procurement checks

Decodo’s pricing page currently displays a free plan and paid monthly examples of $19, $49, and $99. It shows request prices that vary by standard versus premium proxies and by whether JavaScript is enabled, with displayed rate limits ranging from 10 to 50 requests per second; the page also advertises a 14-day money-back option. These are time-sensitive page figures, not a durable quote. Recheck the live plan terms for your account, region, billing cycle, and expected request mix before purchase.

Decodo’s product page states a 99.99% success rate and a network size of 125M+ IPs worldwide. Those are vendor claims, not independently verified outcomes for your URLs, and the network figure may change. Neither number substitutes for your own shadow test. Compare provider costs using the same target mix and count only validated records; a low nominal request price can be misleading if rendering or premium routing is needed to achieve completeness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the replacement’s rate limit and concurrency rules, including whether a limit applies per key, account, target, or region.
  • Confirm what is billed on timeouts, blocks, unsuccessful parses, retries, and asynchronous jobs; do not assume the billing treatment matches Decodo’s.
  • Check how long results and request logs are retained, who can access them, and whether the provider’s terms fit your use case and applicable site policies.
  • Review SDK language support, API observability, and the practical effort of maintaining your own parser when a template is unavailable.

Troubleshooting migration failures

The replacement returns data, but fields are missing

Check whether you mapped a specialized Decodo target to a generic fetch, whether the candidate rendered JavaScript, and whether its result format differs. Compare raw response and parser output, then make the field requiredness explicit in validation. Do not patch missing data with empty values unless the downstream contract defines that behavior.

Pages differ by country or language

Verify the effective proxy country and locale independently; a locale parameter does not necessarily select an IP in that country. Compare the page content returned under identical conditions and test the intended proxy tier on the affected target.

Requests time out or appear intermittently blocked

Segment failures by target, render mode, geography, and provider outcome. Check the configured timeout against the time needed for rendering and extraction, then distinguish transient failures from repeatable target blocks. Apply bounded retries only where the error is retryable; increasing concurrency can worsen throttling rather than fix it.

The API says success but the record is unusable

Move success evaluation after parsing and required-field validation. Track incomplete records separately from transport errors so that parser regressions are visible instead of being counted as successful requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The new plan looks cheaper but the bill is higher

Recompute effective cost by workload slice. Include premium proxy and JavaScript-enabled requests, retries, and the number of usable records produced. Confirm current rate and billing rules with the provider rather than extrapolating from a headline plan price.

Alternatives: compare capability, not brand names

Independent coverage names Bright Data, Oxylabs, and SOAX among comparable proxy or scraping API providers. That makes them candidates to evaluate, not evidence that any one is a one-for-one Decodo replacement. Choose candidates by the work they must handle, and validate target coverage, proxy geography, rendering, output and billing with the same shadow corpus. ScreenshotNeo belongs in a separate category: try it first when the deliverable is a clean screenshot or PDF, not when the job requires Decodo-style structured extraction.
