You can choose viewport, full-page, or element scope, and set WebP quality. chromedp documents PNG and JPEG capture rather than WebP, so its workflow needs an additional image-encoding step.
Capture a webpage directly as WebP with playwright-go
The following example shows the core sequence: start Chromium, open a page, navigate, capture a full-page WebP, and close the browser. Playwright’s API documents WebP screenshots and the Go binding exposes corresponding screenshot options. The exact generated Go option names can vary with the binding version, so check the API for the version pinned in your go.mod before compiling. Playwright Page API · playwright-go.

The snippet follows the binding’s documented shape; confirm that ScreenshotTypeWebp, PageScreenshotOptions, and the launch and page APIs match the exact module version selected for your application. Installing the Go module alone may not install the browser binaries: follow the binding’s setup instructions for its supported Playwright browser runtime. Keep the binding and browser versions compatible, particularly in CI or container deployments.
Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: omit
FullPageor set it to false to capture the current visible viewport. This is appropriate for a preview or a screenshot that must match the displayed fold. - Full page: set
FullPage: playwright.Bool(true)to capture the full scrollable document. This is useful for articles and long landing pages, but may create a very tall image and increase memory use. - Element: locate a particular component and use the element screenshot method provided by the pinned binding version. Element capture is preferable when only a chart, card, or hero region matters. Check the binding’s API for the precise locator and screenshot option names.
Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page capture as distinct screenshot choices. Use the narrowest scope that meets the need; whole-page capture is not automatically a better result. Playwright screenshots guide.

Quality and scale
Playwright documents WebP quality on a 0–100 scale. A quality of 100 produces a lossless WebP; lower values use lossy compression. A lower setting may reduce file size, but the exact size and visual result depend on page content and settings. There is no cited universal percentage or speed improvement to promise. Compare representative pages from your own workflow if file size matters.
The screenshot scale determines whether output follows CSS pixels or device pixels. CSS-pixel scale generally produces smaller dimensions; device-pixel scale preserves high-DPI resolution and can produce larger images. Confirm the scale option’s exact enum or constant in the installed binding version. Playwright screenshot options.
Install and run the browser setup
Use the package and browser installation procedure documented for the precise playwright-go release you pin. A reproducible project should record its Go module version and provision the matching browser in development, build images, and CI. The package’s installation documentation is the authority for commands, browser dependencies, and platform support; avoid assuming a browser is present just because the Go code compiled. playwright-go installation and API.

Use chromedp when its capture model fits
chromedp can navigate and capture screenshots, returning image bytes that your Go program can write with os.WriteFile. Its documented FullScreenshot behavior is PNG when quality is 100 and JPEG otherwise. The underlying Chrome DevTools Protocol screenshot definition lists PNG and JPEG rather than WebP, so a chromedp workflow needs a separate WebP encoder or converter after capture. chromedp package documentation · CDP Page.captureScreenshot.

For a hosted capture rather than a browser process you maintain, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI clients including Claude and Cursor.
Use an API key from your account. The request below saves the returned image response as WebP, with the target URL URL-encoded by curl. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details.

Browser launch fails
The browser binary or required OS libraries may be missing, or the installed browser may not match the binding’s expected runtime. Install the supported browser for the selected release and check the error output for missing executable or shared-library messages. In containers and CI, provision browser dependencies in the image rather than relying on a developer machine setup.
The file is missing, empty, or not WebP
Check the error from navigation and from Screenshot, ensure the process has write permission in the output directory, and verify the returned bytes before treating the capture as complete. The extension is not proof of the encoded format. With chromedp, the documented direct output is PNG or JPEG; writing those bytes to a .webp filename does not convert them.
The screenshot is incomplete or unexpectedly tall
Choose viewport, full-page, or element scope intentionally. A viewport capture excludes content below the fold; full-page includes the scrollable document and can produce a large image. If a page renders content asynchronously or loads images on scroll, allow the page to reach the required state before capture. Confirm the binding’s supported wait mechanisms for your version rather than assuming navigation completion means every application widget has finished rendering.

WebP looks soft or the file is larger than expected
At quality below 100, WebP is lossy; raise quality or use 100 when lossless output is required. Consider CSS-pixel rather than device-pixel scale when high-DPI dimensions are unnecessary. File-size results vary with content, scale, and quality, so compare the actual output for representative pages instead of relying on a generic savings estimate.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
A local browser capture avoids a per-shot hosted API charge but requires you to run and maintain the browser runtime, provide its dependencies, handle failures, and manage concurrency and output storage. For repeatable production capture, pin versions and test the same browser image in CI and deployment. Close pages and browser processes when finished; for high-volume workloads, design lifecycle and concurrency limits around the resources available to your service.
Full-page images consume more memory and disk than viewport or element captures, particularly at device-pixel scale. WebP can offer a useful delivery format, but neither a fixed byte saving nor faster capture is established universally. Benchmark your actual pages and downstream use if those are requirements.
A hosted API trades browser provisioning for network dependency and plan limits. ScreenshotNeo lists monthly plans of Free 1,000 shots, Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Those are the stated plan allowances and prices; select based on expected volume and inspect response billing/verdict headers when handling failed or cached results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a .webp extension convert a PNG screenshot into WebP?
No. The bytes must be encoded as WebP; changing only the filename does not change the image format.
Can I use a full-page screenshot for a very long document?
Yes, but a full-page result may have very large dimensions. If you only need one region or the visible fold, use element or viewport capture instead.
