Bitly is the best URL redirect service for most businesses because it combines editable short links, custom domains, QR codes, analytics, APIs and enterprise controls. Use Rebrandly when brand ownership matters most, Short.io for multi-domain and API-heavy work, TinyURL for a one-off simple link, Dub for developer and growth workflows, BL.INK for enterprise operations, and YOURLS when you want to host the redirect system yourself. If you need domain-to-domain forwarding with explicit 301/302/307/308 control, redirect.pizza is the specialist to evaluate.
These products are not interchangeable. Hosted short-link platforms manage campaigns and measurement; DNS/domain-forwarding services move an entire domain; self-hosted software leaves hosting, security and uptime with your team. Choosing the wrong category can create redirect chains, lost analytics or an avoidable operations burden.
First decide what kind of redirect you need
Permanent site or domain migration
Use a permanent 301 or 308 when an old URL has moved for good. Map every old path to its closest new path, keep the same query parameters when they are still meaningful, update internal links and submit the new URLs to search engines. A domain-forwarding service is usually a better fit than a marketing shortener for a large migration.
Temporary campaign or experiment
Use 302 or 307 when the destination may change. A hosted short-link service lets you edit the destination without replacing a QR code, printed URL or social post. Record the owner, campaign end date and final destination so temporary rules do not become permanent clutter.

Branded links and measurement
Short-link platforms provide a provider domain or your own domain, readable slugs, click counts and often country, device and referrer data. They are useful for campaigns, support documentation and offline material, but check data-retention periods and export options before you depend on historical reports.
Self-hosted redirects
Software such as YOURLS gives a technical team control over the application, database and logs. That control also means you must patch the server, renew certificates, monitor uptime, protect the admin interface and design backups.
At-a-glance comparison
| Service | Best fit | Evidence and notable limits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitly | Most businesses | Free plan lists 5 short links per month; Core 100, Growth 500 and Premium 3,000. Annual-billing prices shown are $10/month Core, $29/month Growth and $199/month Premium. Unlimited clicks, plan-specific editable redirects, country/device analytics, API quotas and a listed 99.99% uptime SLA. | Higher tiers are needed for larger link volume and governance. |
| Rebrandly | Brand-first link management | Current comparison tables describe custom-domain management, API access and a free tier. Linkly’s 2026 table lists 10 free links per month and one free custom domain. | Confirm current quotas and analytics details before a large rollout. |
| Short.io | Multi-domain and API value | The 2026 comparison lists five free custom domains, 1,000 total branded links and 50,000 tracked clicks per month; those quotas measure different units. | Read the unit definitions carefully so link and click limits are not confused. |
| TinyURL | Quick, simple redirects | Bitly characterizes it as quick, with no-account shortening and a free option; paid capability adds custom domains and basic analytics. | Less suitable when you need campaign governance or deep reporting. |
| Dub | Developers and growth teams | The 2026 comparison highlights deep links, webhooks, folders, experiments and attribution. | Its feature depth rewards a defined technical use case rather than casual shortening. |
| BL.INK | Enterprise link operations | Positioned for enterprise operations in the 2026 comparison. | Verify current plan limits, security certifications and support commitments directly. |
| YOURLS | Self-hosted control | Open-source software you operate on your own hosting, retaining control over the redirect stack and data. | You own updates, availability, backups, abuse prevention and security. |
Prices, quotas, retention rules and free-tier policies change. Treat the figures above as the 2026 listings described by the cited comparisons, and recheck each vendor’s current plan page before purchasing.
1. Bitly — best overall for most businesses
Bitly is the safest default when a team needs more than a redirect. It combines short links, QR codes, analytics, landing pages, custom domains, dynamic routing, APIs, integrations and enterprise controls in one hosted service. Existing links can be editable on plans that include that capability, which is valuable when a printed QR code or presentation cannot be replaced.
The 2026 pricing table lists 5 short links per month on Free, 100 on Core, 500 on Growth and 3,000 on Premium, with custom Enterprise volume. Annual-billing prices shown are $10 per month for Core, $29 for Growth and $199 for Premium. Bitly also lists unlimited clicks, country/device analytics, API quotas and a 99.99% uptime SLA. Confirm which analytics, editing and API limits apply to your selected tier.
Choose Bitly when
- Marketing and engineering need the same link inventory.
- You need QR codes, campaign reporting and custom domains together.
- A documented uptime commitment and enterprise controls matter.
Watch for
Free and lower tiers may not match the volume or governance requirements of a busy organization. Define how many new links you create each month, not just how many clicks you expect.
2. Rebrandly — best for brand-first links
Rebrandly is aimed at organizations that want every short URL to reinforce their own domain. It supports branded short-link management, custom-domain administration and API access, with a free tier. Linkly’s 2026 comparison lists 10 free links per month and one free custom domain; those figures should be checked against the current account screen before launch.
Choose Rebrandly when
- Your primary requirement is a recognizable company domain and consistent slugs.
- Several teams need to create links while marketing retains brand governance.
- You expect to automate link creation through an API.
Watch for
Ask how link editing, click history, exports, user roles and domain limits vary by plan. A branded domain also requires DNS records and certificate issuance, so schedule that setup before a campaign goes live.
3. Short.io — best for multi-domain and API value
Short.io is a strong fit for agencies, product teams and developers managing several branded domains. The 2026 comparison lists five free custom domains, 1,000 total branded links and 50,000 tracked clicks per month. Those are different quotas: one limits domains, another links and another tracked traffic. Keep the units separate when forecasting.
Choose Short.io when
- You operate multiple brands, regions or client domains.
- Routing and targeting rules are more important than a minimal interface.
- An API is part of your publishing workflow.
Watch for
Document whether your plan counts links created, active links, clicks or domains, and whether analytics retention meets your reporting cycle. Test a representative API request before migrating production links.
4. TinyURL — best for quick, simple redirects
TinyURL is the practical choice when you need a working short URL immediately and do not need a full campaign platform. Bitly characterizes it as a no-account shortening service with a free option; paid capability adds custom domains and basic analytics.
Choose TinyURL when
- You need a single shareable redirect for a document, event or support reply.
- There is no requirement for team roles, deep attribution or a large link inventory.
Watch for
For a business campaign, verify destination editing, abuse controls, reporting depth and ownership of the custom domain before distributing thousands of links.
5. Dub — best for developer and growth workflows
Dub targets teams that treat links as part of a product or growth system. The 2026 comparison lists deep links, webhooks, folders, experiments and attribution. Those capabilities can connect link events to application and marketing workflows instead of leaving them in a standalone dashboard.
Choose Dub when
- You need webhooks or attribution events in an existing stack.
- Mobile deep linking, experiments or organized link folders are requirements.
- Developers and growth specialists will maintain the system together.
Watch for
Define the event schema, ownership and retention policy before enabling automation. A technically capable platform still needs naming conventions and a rollback plan for routing experiments.
6. BL.INK — best for enterprise operations
BL.INK is positioned for enterprise link operations. That makes it a candidate when procurement, security review, support processes and centralized governance matter as much as creating a short URL.
Questions to ask before buying
- Which plan includes SSO, roles, audit logs, API access and approval workflows?
- What security certifications and data-processing terms apply to your region?
- What support response commitments are contractual rather than promotional?
The available comparison does not establish current numeric limits, certifications or response times, so verify those items directly instead of relying on an old review.
7. YOURLS — best for self-hosted control
YOURLS is the technical-team option when you want to run the redirect stack yourself. You choose the host, database, backups, logging and access controls, and you retain operational control over the data path.
Choose YOURLS when
- Your organization requires self-hosting or has strict data-residency rules.
- You have staff who can patch the application and its dependencies.
- You need custom behavior that a hosted service does not expose.
Accept the responsibility
Plan certificate renewal, monitoring, rate limiting, abuse handling, backups and disaster recovery. A self-hosted redirect that fails at the DNS, web server or database layer fails for every campaign at once.
Specialist option: redirect.pizza for domain forwarding
redirect.pizza is designed for domain-to-domain forwarding rather than primarily for campaign short links. Its current pricing matrix lists 301 permanent, 302 temporary, 307 temporary and 308 permanent redirects on all listed tiers, plus path and query-parameter forwarding, automatic HTTPS and DNS, HSTS and DDoS protection. Optional WAF is available on higher plans.
Analytics retention is listed as 3 months on Basic, 6 months on Pro and 12 months on Business and Enterprise. That retention window matters if a migration project needs year-over-year evidence. A separate guide notes that DNS-based services generally charge by source-domain count, while redirection.io charges by rule count; it also records that EasyRedir rebranded to urllo in late 2024, so older articles may use the old name.

Implement redirects without creating SEO or reliability problems
- Inventory every source URL. Export current paths, query parameters, status codes and top referrers. Do not redirect every old page to the home page; map it to the closest useful destination.
- Select the status code. Use 301 or 308 for a permanent move and 302 or 307 for a temporary route. Keep the choice consistent with the migration plan.
- Preserve meaningful paths and parameters. Forward the path and required campaign parameters, while removing tracking data that should not be copied to the new site.
- Use one hop whenever possible. Old URL to final URL is faster and easier to crawl than a chain through several shorteners.
- Test HTTPS, canonical tags and assets. Check desktop and mobile requests, authentication boundaries, robots directives and mixed-content warnings before changing DNS.
- Monitor after launch. Watch 4xx/5xx rates, redirect loops, latency, click counts and destination availability. Keep the old domain and certificates active for as long as users and search engines may still request them.
Minimal Nginx example
server {
server_name old.example.com;
return 301 https://www.example.com$request_uri;
}
Minimal Apache example
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^old.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
Minimal Node.js example
import express from 'express';
const app = express();
app.get('/old-path', (req, res) => {
res.redirect(302, 'https://www.example.com/new-path');
});
app.listen(3000);
Replace the temporary 302 in the Node example with 301 only after the destination is final. In every implementation, test both the bare URL and a URL carrying a query string.

The browser reports a redirect loop
Check whether the source and destination rules point at each other, whether an HTTPS-enforcement rule is duplicated at both the proxy and origin, and whether a trailing-slash rule sends the request back to the source.
The path disappears after forwarding
Your rule may redirect only the hostname. Enable path forwarding or capture the path in the web-server rule. Test nested paths, encoded characters and query parameters separately.
Analytics show clicks but the destination is wrong
Inspect the active destination version, scheduled expiration and device or country targeting. Compare the provider’s click URL with the final URL in a private browser session.
Recommended Free Tools
HTTPS or DNS setup is stuck
Confirm the required DNS record, remove conflicting records, wait for DNS propagation and issue the certificate before publishing the link. Never distribute a URL that still serves a certificate warning.
A self-hosted service goes offline
Check certificate expiry, web-server health, database connectivity, firewall rules and backups. Add an external uptime check because an internal monitor cannot report a complete host outage.
If you also need clean website screenshots
ScreenshotNeo is not a URL redirect service; it solves a different problem: taking website screenshots or PDFs through an API or MCP server. It is the alternative to try first when your redirect project also needs automated visual checks, because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture and bills only clean shots.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The response identifies page status with X-Page-Verdict and billing with X-Billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a permanent redirect remain active?
Keep it while users, bookmarks, partner sites and search engines can still request the old URL. For a domain migration, retain the old domain, DNS and certificate through the transition rather than deleting them immediately after launch.
Do redirect services replace a CDN or web application firewall?
No. A short-link or forwarding service handles routing; caching, origin protection and application security remain separate concerns unless a particular provider explicitly bundles them.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I move a branded short domain between providers?
Usually you can repoint DNS, but existing slugs, click history, certificates and API behavior may not transfer. Export your link inventory and confirm import and redirect-preservation support before switching.
The Bottom Line
Choose Bitly for the broadest business feature set, Rebrandly for brand-first management, Short.io for multi-domain API work, TinyURL for simplicity, Dub for developer workflows, BL.INK for enterprise operations and YOURLS for self-hosting. Use redirect.pizza when the job is whole-domain forwarding with explicit HTTP status control.
