S3-Compatible Image Storage: Amazon S3 vs. Cloudflare R2

Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2 both store images through S3-style APIs, but compatibility, delivery charges, lifecycle behavior, and operations differ. Learn how to compare them and upload directly to R2 without exposing credentials.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Amazon S3 when your application depends on AWS-specific features, established AWS operations, or S3 storage classes and recovery options; choose Cloudflare R2 when you need S3-compatible object storage and want to avoid egress fees. R2 is compatible with much of the S3 API, but it is not an identical replacement. Before moving image workloads, check the API operations and controls your application actually uses, then compare storage, requests, retrieval, and delivery costs against your traffic pattern.

Amazon S3 or Cloudflare R2: what changes for image storage?

Both services store images as objects in buckets and expose an S3-style programming interface. Amazon S3 is AWS object storage; Cloudflare R2 is S3-compatible object storage on Cloudflare’s global network, intended for frequently accessed internet data such as web assets and user-generated content. Cloudflare describes R2 as having no egress fees. AWS S3 pricing, by contrast, can include storage, requests, retrieval, data transfer, lifecycle transitions, replication, and related feature charges.

That makes delivery economics an important distinction, but it does not make the choice automatic. Image traffic can be dominated by storage, request volume, retrieval, or outbound transfer depending on image size, cache behavior, and how often objects are read. Model the workload rather than comparing one headline price or assuming that “no egress fees” means “no charges.”

Decision point Amazon S3 Cloudflare R2
API AWS S3 API and features. Substantial S3 API compatibility; check the operation-by-operation table for gaps and differences before migrating.
Durability and availability statements AWS states 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year. AWS says standard S3 classes store objects redundantly across at least three Availability Zones in an AWS Region. Cloudflare states 99.999999999% annual durability. The cited statement does not give a matching availability percentage.
Delivery charges AWS lists transfer charges alongside storage, requests, retrieval, lifecycle transitions, replication, and related feature charges. Cloudflare describes R2 as having no egress fees. Storage, request, and, for Infrequent Access, retrieval charges still matter.
Lifecycle Lifecycle rules can transition or delete objects; examples include Standard-IA after 30 days or Glacier Flexible Retrieval after one year. Lifecycle rules can delete objects or transition Standard objects to Infrequent Access. Infrequent Access has a 30-day minimum and retrieval charges.
Current per-unit prices Not stated here; calculate for the selected region, storage class, and usage. Not stated here; calculate for the selected storage class and usage.

The durability and availability numbers are provider statements, not a head-to-head test. Durability describes the likelihood of retaining stored data; it is not a promise that every request will be available or that a service meets your recovery-time needs. Set backup, versioning, and recovery requirements separately from the provider’s headline durability figure.

Is Cloudflare R2 compatible with S3?

Yes, substantially: R2 exposes an S3-compatible endpoint and can be used with S3 SDKs and tools. Compatibility is not complete identity. Cloudflare publishes an operation-by-operation compatibility table and identifies unsupported or different behavior, including some ACL, object-locking, tagging, website, and AWS KMS-related options. Check the specific API operations and settings your application relies on rather than treating “S3-compatible” as a migration guarantee.

For R2, configure the client with your account’s R2 endpoint, region: "auto", and R2 credentials. An empty region and us-east-1 are compatibility aliases for clients that require a region value. When uploading, set the object’s content type—for example, image/png—so clients handle the image as intended.

Migration checks before switching

  • Inventory the actual SDK operations your upload, read, delete, and administration paths call.
  • Check any use of ACLs, object lock, tags, website redirects, or AWS-specific encryption settings against R2’s compatibility table.
  • Confirm how credentials, bucket access, versioning, lifecycle rules, and operational monitoring will work in the target service.
  • Test representative image objects and failure cases in a non-production bucket before changing application traffic.
  • For workloads with residency or compliance requirements, verify the service’s current terms and the location and controls relevant to your organization; do not infer those requirements from API compatibility.

How to upload images directly from a browser to R2

Do not place R2 access credentials in browser JavaScript. Instead, have a trusted server authenticate the user, create a short-lived presigned PUT URL, and return that URL to the browser. The browser uploads the file directly to R2 using the signed URL. This keeps the account credentials on the server while avoiding routing the image bytes through your application server.

1. Install the server-side SDK

For a Node.js server using the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3, install the S3 client and presigner:

npm install @aws-sdk/client-s3 @aws-sdk/s3-request-presigner

2. Create a presigned upload URL on your server

Set R2_ACCOUNT_ID, R2_ACCESS_KEY_ID, and R2_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY in the server environment. The account endpoint takes the form shown below. The example accepts a server-selected object key and content type; in a production application, authorize the user and validate the key and allowed image types before signing.

import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from "@aws-sdk/client-s3";
import { getSignedUrl } from "@aws-sdk/s3-request-presigner";

const client = new S3Client({
  region: "auto",
  endpoint: `https://${process.env.R2_ACCOUNT_ID}.r2.cloudflarestorage.com`,
  credentials: {
    accessKeyId: process.env.R2_ACCESS_KEY_ID,
    secretAccessKey: process.env.R2_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY,
  },
});

const bucket = process.env.R2_BUCKET;

export async function makeUploadUrl(key, contentType) {
  const command = new PutObjectCommand({
    Bucket: bucket,
    Key: key,
    ContentType: contentType,
  });
  return getSignedUrl(client, command, { expiresIn: 300 });
}

Connect makeUploadUrl to an authenticated route in your server framework and return its result as JSON. The expiry above is five minutes; the client must upload before the signed URL expires. Choose the expiration to fit your upload flow rather than treating the example value as a universal setting.

3. Upload from the browser

After your application requests an authorized upload URL from its server, use that URL for the PUT request. Send the same content type that the server signed:

async function uploadImage(file, uploadUrl) {
  const response = await fetch(uploadUrl, {
    method: "PUT",
    headers: { "Content-Type": file.type || "image/png" },
    body: file,
  });

  if (!response.ok) {
    throw new Error(`R2 upload failed: ${response.status} ${response.statusText}`);
  }
}

Browser uploads also require the bucket’s cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) rules to permit the website origin and the PUT method. Configure only the origins and methods your application needs. A successful upload stores an object; it does not by itself make that object publicly readable or provide image resizing. Decide separately how images will be delivered and protected.

How to compare storage, request, and delivery costs

Use a representative month of image activity and estimate each cost category separately. Cloudflare’s no-egress-fee model can be valuable when users read many images over the internet, but it does not remove storage, operation, or applicable retrieval charges. S3 costs require attention to transfer as well as storage and request activity.

  1. Estimate stored data. Multiply the average retained image size by the number of retained objects, accounting for originals, derivatives, and versions if you keep them.
  2. Count operations. Estimate uploads, reads, metadata checks, deletes, and lifecycle or replication activity. Image galleries and thumbnail-heavy pages can make request volume significant even when files are small.
  3. Estimate delivery. Use outbound bytes and the expected cache-hit rate. A cache that serves repeated reads can change the storage provider’s read and transfer profile; do not assume every browser request reaches the bucket.
  4. Include retrieval and lifecycle effects. For R2 Infrequent Access, account for its 30-day minimum and retrieval charges. For S3, include the selected class’s retrieval and transition costs if applicable.
  5. Check the destination region and features. Provider prices and available options depend on configuration. Compare the actual regions, storage classes, and features you would use, and verify current prices with each provider before committing.

The provider statements cited here do not establish a single universal monthly price or a workload-specific winner. A low-read archive and a frequently served image library are different cost problems. Build the estimate from your own object sizes, reads, cache behavior, retention, and transfer.

Lifecycle, archival, and retention choices

Both services support lifecycle controls, but their options and economics differ. S3 Lifecycle can transition or delete objects; AWS examples include moving data to Standard-IA after 30 days or Glacier Flexible Retrieval after one year. R2 lifecycle rules can delete objects or transition Standard objects to Infrequent Access. R2 Infrequent Access has a 30-day minimum and retrieval charges, so an image that is fetched often or deleted quickly may not benefit from that class.

Choose transitions based on an object’s access pattern and retention obligation, not just its age. For user uploads, decide how deletion requests, generated variants, and retained copies should behave. For archival material, confirm the retrieval delay and recovery workflow your application can tolerate from the selected class; do not infer these details solely from the storage-class name.

Reliability, recovery, and operations

Cloudflare’s stated annual durability for R2 and AWS’s stated durability for S3 are both 99.999999999%. AWS additionally states 99.99% availability of objects over a given year and says its standard S3 classes redundantly store objects across a minimum of three Availability Zones in an AWS Region. These are different statements: the cited R2 durability figure does not establish an equivalent R2 availability figure.

For either platform, define what your application must do when an upload, read, or provider request fails. Consider retries for transient failures, monitoring of failed requests, backup or independent copies for critical images, and a tested restore path. If recovery time, regional resilience, data residency, or compliance is a hard requirement, verify the exact service and configuration against that requirement before migrating.

Common problems and fixes

  • SDK reports a region or endpoint error: For R2, use the account-specific R2 endpoint and region: "auto". If a client requires a region string, Cloudflare identifies an empty region and us-east-1 as compatibility aliases.
  • Presigned upload is rejected: Check that the URL has not expired, the request uses PUT, and the browser sends the same content type used when signing. Confirm the bucket and object key in the server-generated command.
  • Browser request fails but server-side upload works: Check R2 CORS configuration for the exact website origin and PUT method. Do not solve this by exposing the account’s secret credentials to the browser.
  • Uploaded image downloads as an unknown file: Set the correct object Content-Type, such as image/png, when creating the upload command.
  • Migration breaks an administrative or bucket feature: Check the R2 compatibility table for the operation and feature in question, especially ACLs, object lock, tagging, website behavior, and AWS KMS-related options. Replace or redesign unsupported dependencies before cutover.
  • Costs exceed the estimate: Recheck read and request counts, cache-hit assumptions, retrieval, transfer, lifecycle transitions, replication, and retained variants. The provider’s storage rate alone is not a complete workload estimate.

Which service should you choose?

Choose Amazon S3 when the application needs an AWS-specific S3 feature, uses AWS operational tooling, or benefits from the S3 storage-class and lifecycle options that fit its recovery requirements. Choose Cloudflare R2 when its S3-compatible API covers your required operations and avoiding egress fees is important for frequently accessed web images. In either case, test the actual API calls, model the complete workload cost, and verify the operational and compliance requirements before moving production data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “no egress fees” mean an R2 image library has no delivery-related costs?

No. It refers to egress fees; storage and request charges still apply, and R2 Infrequent Access also has retrieval charges.

Is object storage itself an image CDN or image optimizer?

No. Storing an image and serving or transforming it are separate parts of an image pipeline. Plan separately for delivery, caching, access control, and any resizing or format conversion your application needs.
