Peak Design’s Outdoor range is a modular family for day hikes, cycling, travel, commuting and adventure photography—not a single technical backpacking system. The 18L and 25L packs suit most day use, while the internally framed 45L carries bulkier loads at a substantial weight penalty. Add Camera Cubes, a sling, hip belt or Rain Fly and the system becomes more capable, but also more expensive.
What the Peak Design Outdoor line includes
The Outdoor line extends Peak Design’s camera-carry ecosystem into mixed outdoor and urban use. The current family includes three backpacks, three slings in Peak Design Japan’s listing, and several optional accessories. Regional catalogs are not identical: the US site lists the 18L, 25L and 45L backpacks, while the Japanese site lists 2L, 4L and 7L slings. Check your local store for stock, colors and compatibility before ordering.

The original September 3, 2024 launch announcement covered only the 25L and 45L backpacks and 2L and 7L slings. The 18L backpack and 4L sling are therefore important additions to any current buying guide. Peak Design Japan currently shows Black, Eclipse and Kelp backpack colors, whereas launch coverage described Black, Cloud and Eclipse; color availability can vary by market.

Outdoor Backpack 18L
The 18L is the streamlined choice. Peak Design markets it as a compact daypack for trail, bike and commute use, with rear access and room for a small modular camera setup. It makes sense for short outings, a mirrorless camera, a drone or a change of clothes. It is not intended for overnight equipment, a large camera system or sustained heavy loads.
Outdoor Backpack 25L
The 25L is the practical middle ground. Its frameless body expands from 20L to 25L, and combines rear-panel access with a roll-top opening and quick cinch. Hydration compatibility, a laptop compartment, expandable Flex Pockets and external attachment points cover a broad day-hike and travel brief. The optional hip belt matters if your load becomes heavy; compare the price of the complete setup rather than the base bag alone.
Outdoor Backpack 45L
The 45L is the load-hauling model, with an internal frame, removable hip belt and expansion from 34.5L to 45L. It is the strongest fit for larger Camera Cubes, bulky clothing, shelter systems and multi-day travel. The launch report gave it a weight of 3.97 pounds (1.8 kilograms). That is reasonable for a feature-rich hybrid bag but heavy beside many minimalist backpacking packs, so it is not a weight-first choice for long-distance hikers.

How the design works outdoors
Rear and roll-top access
The 25L and 45L can be opened from the back or through the roll-top. Rear access lets you lay the pack down and see the main compartment without excavating from the top. The 18L emphasizes rear access in a simpler compact format.

External carry and attachment points
Expandable exterior pockets, cord rails and carry cords can hold jackets, bottles, helmets, tripods, sleeping pads and other bulky, relatively light items. Attachment points are not a guarantee of a stable load: overfilling them can cause sway, snags, noise and a poorly balanced center of gravity. Keep dense items close to your back and reserve the exterior for compressible gear.
Hydration and laptop storage
The larger packs provide a sleeve for a hydration reservoir and a hose pass-through, while laptop storage supports commuting and travel. Confirm the dimensions and routing for your particular reservoir; a laptop sleeve is not automatically a hydration compartment, and neither feature proves that a pack has technical-hiking ventilation.

Materials and rain protection
Peak Design describes the current exterior as recycled Terra Shell 210D ripstop with a PFAS-free water-repelling treatment and calls the bags functionally weatherproof. A separate Rain Fly is listed for additional protection. “Weatherproof” is not the same as a waterproof rating: sustained rain, exposed zippers, seams and closure technique still matter.
The camera-carry system
Outdoor backpacks accept Peak Design Camera Cubes, and the bags include attachment points for the company’s Capture Clip. A Cube turns the general-purpose compartment into a padded camera module that can be removed when you want a normal hiking or travel pack. Ultralight Packing Cubes add clothing organization; Peak Design’s current page showed a three-pack at $53.87, with $59.85 displayed as the comparison price.

A bare backpack is not a complete camera-protection system, however. Camera Cubes are extra purchases, occupy usable volume and must be sized for the chosen pack; the 45L accommodates larger configurations than the smaller models. The current Outdoor Backpack page showed Camera Cube V2 prices from $49.95 to $139.95, so include that cost when comparing a complete camera setup.

Are these genuinely good hiking backpacks?
They are credible day-hike and adventure-photography packs, but the available specifications do not establish that they outperform purpose-built hiking packs in every respect.

Choose a dedicated lightweight hiking pack if minimum weight, adjustable suspension, ventilation, trekking-pole carry and efficient load transfer matter more than camera and laptop integration. Choose the Outdoor line when one bag must move between trail, airport, bicycle and city.

Choose the 18L for compact day use
- Short hikes, bike rides and urban/outdoor crossover
- A small camera, drone or binoculars
- A streamlined personal bag for travel
- No overnight kit or heavy load
Choose the 25L as the all-rounder
- Day hikes, travel days and daily carry
- Moderate camera equipment, food, water and spare clothing
- Expansion without the bulk of a 45L pack
- Willingness to add the hip belt when loads justify it
Choose the 45L for bulk and heavier mixed loads
- Large camera systems and larger Camera Cubes
- Bulky clothing, shelter or multi-day travel equipment
- An internally framed pack with an included hip belt
- Acceptance that it is not an ultralight backpack
Choose a sling for fast access
The 7L is the largest sling and can be configured with the extra-small Camera Cube; the 4L is the middle option, and the 2L handles essentials. Launch coverage described the 2L and 7L as convertible between crossbody and waist carry and attachable to backpack shoulder straps for chest access. A sling distributes weight differently from a real hip belt, so it is an access solution, not a substitute for load-bearing suspension.

A sling, Capture Clip or additional Cube can raise the total further. The modular approach is economical for existing Peak Design owners, but less so for a buyer starting from zero.

Bottom line: versatile, but not universal
Peak Design’s Outdoor bags are genuinely versatile. The 18L is the compact crossover choice, the 25L is the most broadly useful daypack, and the 45L is the option for bulky camera and travel loads. Their rear access, modular inserts, hydration support and urban-friendly storage make them attractive to photographers, commuters and travelers who also spend time outdoors.
They are not ideal for every adventure. The 45L’s reported 3.97-pound weight, the 25L’s optional hip belt and the extra cost of protective modules weaken the case for ultralight or highly technical backpacking. Buy the Outdoor line when modularity and one-bag flexibility matter more than the lowest weight or most specialized suspension—and verify your regional lineup and current prices before checkout.
