If one press produces two clicks, first check that Windows is not set to open items with a single click and rule out a button-mapping or connection problem. If the same physical button still double-clicks on another computer, a worn or contaminated switch becomes the leading explanation; use the warranty before opening the mouse.
What kind of double-click problem are you seeing?
This guide addresses one physical press being interpreted as two clicks—not simply having trouble making two intentional clicks quickly enough. The symptoms can include a file opening when you meant to select it, a drag operation dropping unexpectedly, or a held button releasing and clicking again. Note which button is affected and whether the problem happens everywhere or only in one app.
Normal double-click-speed settings control how close together two intentional clicks must be to count as a double-click. They may help if deliberate double-clicks are not recognized reliably, but they generally do not repair a switch that sends two events from one press.
Start with these quick checks
- Test the mouse in File Explorer or Finder and in a browser. If the fault appears only in one app, check that app’s settings, macros, and input integrations first.
- Try another mouse on the same computer, then try the suspect mouse on another computer. This helps separate a computer-wide issue from one that follows the mouse.
- Check the operating system’s click behavior and double-click speed, described below.
- Reconnect the mouse directly to the computer, check its battery if wireless, and clean around the affected button safely.
- Inspect the manufacturer utility for button assignments or profile-specific commands. If the fault follows the mouse across computers, check warranty coverage before considering repair.
Check whether the problem follows the mouse
| Test result | What it points to |
|---|---|
| Another mouse works normally on the same computer | The suspect mouse, its receiver, or mouse-specific software is more likely. |
| The suspect mouse double-clicks on another computer too | The mouse or its receiver is more likely than a setting on the first computer. Microsoft recommends testing a mouse on another computer; if it still fails there, replacement may be necessary. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guide |
| All mice have the problem on one computer | Investigate operating-system settings, drivers, USB connections, or software on that computer. |
| Only one application is affected | Look for that app’s input settings, macros, overlays, remote-desktop or virtual-machine behavior. |
| Only wireless operation is affected | Check battery charge, pairing, receiver placement, and the wireless connection. |
| Only one physical button is affected | Check that button’s assignment; if it is still affected across computers, its switch may be wearing out. |
A simple mouse-button tester can help establish whether a press registers twice, but use one only if you are comfortable with the site receiving whatever data its page collects. You can also compare behavior in ordinary apps without using a tester.

Correct click settings in Windows
Make sure a single click is not set to open items
- Open File Explorer.
- In Windows 11, select the three-dot menu and then Options. In Windows 10, open the File Explorer View tab and select Options.
- On the General tab, under Click items as follows, choose Double-click to open an item (single-click to select an item).
- Select Apply, then OK, and test a file or folder.
This changes how Windows opens and selects items; it cannot fix a faulty mouse switch. Logitech also identifies the single-click-to-open setting as a possible explanation when the behavior has been present since installation. Logitech’s explanation
Adjust double-click speed only if it fits the symptom
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Additional mouse settings.
- On the Buttons tab, move Double-click speed toward Slow.
- Test the folder icon beside the slider. The control is also available through Control Panel > Mouse > Buttons on some installations.
This can make two deliberate clicks easier for Windows to recognize. It is unlikely to cure a mouse that visibly generates an extra click from one press, especially if the same fault occurs on another computer. Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance also points to this Buttons control. Logitech mouse-button troubleshooting
Check macOS settings
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse.
- Move Double-click speed toward Slow.
- Test the mouse in Finder and a browser, not just in the app where you first noticed the fault.
Apple lists System Settings as the place to adjust Magic Mouse tracking, double-click, and scrolling speed. The setting may help with intentional double-click recognition; it does not establish that a physical switch is healthy. Apple’s Magic Mouse settings guidance

Reconnect the mouse and check wireless causes
Wired USB mouse
- Unplug the mouse and wait several seconds.
- Reconnect it to a different USB port directly on the computer.
- For testing, bypass hubs, KVM switches, monitor USB ports, and extension cables.
Wireless mouse with a USB receiver
- Replace or recharge the battery.
- Unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then connect it directly to the computer.
- If the mouse has a connect or reset button, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reconnect it.
- Keep the receiver away from other high-speed USB devices while testing. If operation improves when the receiver is moved or the mouse is used wired, investigate the wireless path rather than assuming the switch is defective.
Bluetooth mouse
- Recharge or replace the battery, then turn the mouse off and on.
- Remove the mouse from the computer’s Bluetooth device list and pair it again.
- Restart the computer if the problem began after an operating-system or driver update.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Clean around the button without flooding the mouse
- Disconnect a wired mouse or remove the batteries from a wireless one.
- Use short bursts of air around the button gap to dislodge loose debris; do not hold a can close to the mouse or force air into it.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth. If needed, use a cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with mild soap and water.
- For compatible exterior surfaces, use no more than 70% isopropyl alcohol on the cloth—not poured or sprayed onto the device.
- Let the mouse dry completely before reconnecting or reinstalling batteries.
Microsoft advises disconnecting the device or removing its batteries before cleaning and not applying liquid directly. Microsoft’s cleaning instructions Cleaning may remove debris, but it cannot reliably restore a worn electrical contact.
- Do not spray WD-40 or household lubricant into the switch.
- Do not pour alcohol or contact cleaner through the button.
- Do not hit or shake the mouse aggressively, or bend an internal switch spring as a routine fix.
- Do not open a mouse before checking its warranty.
Check button assignments, profiles, and updates
Manufacturer utilities can assign a double-click, macro, multi-action, or auto-repeat command to a button. Inspect the profile active when the problem occurs, including any application-specific profile, and restore the affected button to a plain left- or right-click. Then test with the utility closed if possible.

If all mice misbehave on one computer, also check for Mouse Keys, ClickLock, auto-clickers, remote-desktop or virtual-machine input behavior, gaming macros, and accessibility or input utilities. These are alternative explanations to investigate when the symptom is software-specific; they do not by themselves demonstrate that a physical switch is double-clicking.

When the mouse switch is probably failing
A mechanical microswitch becomes the leading suspect when the same button misbehaves across computers, other checks do not change the symptom, and the problem has gradually worsened. Unexpected release during a drag or changes in behavior when pressing lightly or at a different part of the button add to the suspicion. A single physical press may be producing two electrical button events through switch contact bounce or degradation. Wireless problems, remapped buttons, and app-specific behavior can look similar, so use the cross-device test before deciding.

For a relatively new mouse, contact the manufacturer before opening it. Warranty length and requirements depend on the exact model and region: Logitech lists a two-year limited hardware warranty for the G502 X LIGHTSPEED, while ASUS’s U.S. warranty table lists 12 months for mice. Neither figure should be assumed to apply to every model or country. Logitech G502 X LIGHTSPEED warranty · ASUS U.S. warranty table · Microsoft warranty information
Before contacting support, gather the model and serial number, proof of purchase, purchase date, computer and operating system details, and a short video showing one press producing two actions. Record whether the fault happened on another computer too. Leave the mouse unopened while a warranty claim is being considered.

Repair, replace, or use a temporary workaround?
Replace the mouse
Replacement is often the more practical option for a low-cost, heavily worn mouse, a device with other failing parts, or anyone who needs a dependable result without soldering. If buying another mouse, consider shape and hand fit, warranty, support and spare-parts availability, and whether its main-click switches are described as optical, hybrid, or replaceable. Optical or hybrid designs avoid the traditional mechanical-contact failure mode, but they do not make the rest of a mouse failure-proof.
Replace the microswitch
Switch replacement may suit an expensive mouse that is otherwise in good condition. It typically requires disassembly, a physically and electrically compatible switch, soldering and desoldering tools, and care around small springs, screws, ribbon cables, and mouse feet. Switch height, pin layout, footprint, and actuation characteristics differ. Opening the mouse can damage it or affect warranty coverage, so this is not a universal beginner fix.
Choose a model designed for switch replacement
Some models have push-fit sockets, but compatibility is specific. ASUS says the ROG Gladius III series supports compatible 3-pin mechanical switches and 5-pin Omron optical micro switches, and warns that incompatible switches may damage the mouse. ASUS ROG Gladius III product information ASUS also describes replaceable switches and a push-fit socket for the ROG Spatha X. ASUS ROG Spatha X product information
Consider software debounce only as a stopgap
Some mouse utilities or third-party tools can suppress rapid repeated clicks. A debounce delay may make a marginal switch usable temporarily, but can add click latency, affect drag operations or games, and fail in apps the tool does not cover. It does not repair the switch; avoid unofficial tools you cannot trust.

If a fix fails or only lasts briefly
- The mouse stops working after cleaning: Disconnect it, remove its batteries if applicable, and let it dry fully. Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun. If liquid entered the shell, avoid repeatedly powering it on and seek warranty or professional repair advice.
- The problem returns after cleaning or reconnecting: A temporary improvement may mean debris shifted or a deteriorating switch is intermittently making contact; seek warranty service or choose repair or replacement.
- The mouse fails after it was opened: Check ribbon cables, the battery connector, switch orientation and solder joints, button springs, screws, and shell clips. If it is under warranty, stop disassembly and contact the manufacturer.
- A replacement mouse has the same symptom: Check whether the same software profile, macro, USB port, receiver arrangement, or app is being used. A repeated symptom does not by itself prove both mice have defective switches.
