In April 2024, WIRED found thousands of Meta Ad Library listings for apps marketed as explicit AI girlfriends, NSFW chatbots, and image “undressing” tools. The ads appeared inconsistent with Meta’s ban on adult advertising, but the figures were keyword-search snapshots—not a count of unique campaigns, people reached, or ads still running today.
What WIRED found in Meta’s Ad Library
WIRED’s April 25, 2024 investigation searched Meta’s Ad Library for ads associated with explicit AI-girlfriend terms. It reported at least 29,000 results, including at least 19,000 containing “NSFW” and at least 14,000 containing “NSFW AI.” About 2,700 were active when WIRED first contacted Meta. A later check found about 3,000 AI-girlfriend ads and 1,100 containing “NSFW” still active.
These counts describe search results at particular points in time, not a permanent census. They may include overlapping or localized versions; they do not establish how many unique advertisers or campaigns were involved, how many people saw an ad, or how much the ads earned. WIRED also found roughly 1,700 ads associated with Hush in its initial review and about 980 results for a Rosytalk-related search for “personalized AI companion.” WIRED’s investigation documented ads appearing across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
What the ads were selling
The listings were not all for the same kind of product. They promoted apps described as AI girlfriends or companions, chatbots offering sexual conversations, role-play with sexualized characters, and services promising generated “secret photos.” Some ads promoted tools that claimed to remove clothing from images. Other marketing blended emotional companionship or relief from loneliness with explicit interactions.

WIRED described sexualized characters and age-coded language, including terms such as “#barelylegal” and “#teens.” A youthful-looking fictional character is not, by itself, proof that an image depicts a real minor or illegal material. But sexual marketing built around youth cues raises a serious safety concern, and the reporting does not establish that every ad it found involved illegal content.
Why the ads appeared to conflict with Meta’s rules
Meta’s Advertising Standards prohibit adult content in ads, including material that is explicit, overly suggestive, or sexually provocative. Its business guidance on ad review says review can consider creative, text, targeting, destination websites, and click-to-message experiences. The reported sexualized imagery and explicit product promises therefore appeared inconsistent with the published rules.
That is evidence of a gap between policy and observed enforcement—not proof that Meta deliberately approved each ad or that every listing violated the same rule. An ad can communicate sexual meaning through context, poses, suggestive language, or its destination rather than explicit anatomy in the image itself. Review also has to account for changing creative, advertiser identities, and what users encounter after clicking. These are plausible moderation challenges; the reporting does not establish which, if any, explains a particular ad’s appearance.

What the Ad Library can—and cannot—show
Meta describes the Ad Library as a searchable database of ads currently running across its products. Ordinary commercial ads generally have less historical visibility than political, electoral, and issue ads, for which Meta provides broader archives. Meta also notes that some ads may be removed from the library, including in certain cases involving serious Community Standards violations or government requests. - An ad marked active does not mean every user—or any particular user—was shown it.
- A listing in the library does not show that Meta intentionally approved the ad; removal from the library does not show when or how widely it ran.
- Because ordinary commercial ads do not have the same complete historical archive as political ads, the library cannot by itself establish a full history of a campaign.
For those reasons, WIRED’s figures are useful evidence of what searches surfaced during its investigation, not a reliable measure of prevalence in August 2026.
Meta’s response—and what it did not establish
Meta told WIRED that adult content is prohibited in advertising, that it was reviewing and removing ads that violated its rules, and that it was improving systems to detect prohibited ads and behavior. WIRED reported that thousands of relevant ads remained visible in a subsequent Ad Library check. The reporting documents a shortfall between the written standard and the listings researchers could find; it does not establish that Meta admitted a systemic failure, knowingly approved the ads, or that every visible listing remained deliverable to users.

Why this is more than a question of explicit images
Different treatment of synthetic services and human adult workers
WIRED reported criticism from sex workers and advocates who said platforms often remove or restrict their content while ads for AI-generated sexual products remain visible. Their concern is unequal enforcement: a synthetic service may find ways to advertise at scale while human workers face account or promotion restrictions. The investigation records this criticism; it does not provide a comparative audit measuring enforcement across all adult content.
Companionship claims and consumer expectations
Some products are marketed both as emotional companions and as sources of sexual interaction. That combination can blur what a consumer is buying, especially if advertising implies support for loneliness. These apps should not be treated as therapy or as clinically validated mental-health interventions without appropriate evidence. App-level questions—such as how billing works, what happens to intimate conversations and images, whether users can delete data, and whether capabilities are accurately described—require evidence about each service rather than an inference from its Meta ad.

Fictional avatars, likeness, and “undressing” tools
A fictional AI character raises different issues from a tool that purports to alter a real person’s image. When recognizable people are used without consent, or a product facilitates nonconsensual intimate imagery, likeness and harassment concerns become central. The 2024 ad findings do not establish the practices or outputs of every app advertised.

Age-coded sexual marketing
References to “teen” or “barely legal” framing warrant scrutiny even where a character is fictional. They should not be treated as proof of child sexual-abuse material, but neither should artificiality make youth-coded sexual promotion irrelevant to platform safety. The available reporting does not show that children were targeted or received these ads.

Meta’s April 2024 announcement about labeling AI-generated or manipulated media addressed disclosure in relevant contexts, including organic content and certain political or social-issue ads. The labeling policy is distinct from whether sexually explicit material is eligible for advertising. A label can disclose how media was made; it does not resolve content eligibility, ad eligibility, or whether a placement reaches an appropriate audience.
What the 2024 findings do not tell us
- How many people saw the ads, or whether children were among them.
- How much the ads generated in revenue or what any advertiser spent.
- Whether Meta knowingly approved particular ads or why a specific ad passed review.
- Whether an app’s outputs were illegal, or whether its claims about privacy, billing, or capabilities were accurate.
- Whether the same volume or pattern of advertising persisted through August 2026.
The 2024 investigation is a documented episode and a reason to examine how platforms enforce their rules. It is not a current prevalence study. Establishing the situation today would require a fresh, clearly dated audit and evidence about ad delivery, advertiser identities, destinations, and enforcement outcomes.

The wider policy problem
AI can make sexualized advertising faster to produce and harder to classify when meaning depends on context rather than a single image. At the same time, synthetic characters are not interchangeable with real people: fictional avatars raise different questions from nonconsensual depictions of identifiable people. Effective oversight has to distinguish those cases while addressing age-coded marketing, targeting, destination content, and consumer disclosures—not just whether a platform adds an AI label.
The advertising chain also extends beyond a social network: developers, agencies or affiliates, image and chatbot providers, app stores, payment processors, and analytics services may all be involved. The WIRED investigation does not establish what each participant knew about each ad. Its central finding is narrower but consequential: in April 2024, searches of Meta’s public library surfaced thousands of ads for explicit AI-companion products despite Meta’s stated adult-advertising restrictions.
