All six remain on Google’s current supported-country list, but country support alone does not guarantee that a particular phone, car or Android Auto feature will work.
Which countries were added, and when?
Google’s announcement dated March 31, 2021 named six countries: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden. It said Android Auto, including Google Assistant functionality, was available there from that date. The announcement described the service as available “now”; it does not establish that every account, phone and vehicle became usable at the same moment. Read Google’s announcement.
This is a historical expansion, not a new 2026 rollout. Google’s current Android Auto guidance still lists all six countries as supported markets.
What did availability mean?
The change made Android Auto an officially supported service in those national markets, including Google Assistant functionality as described in the announcement. It did not add Android Auto to every car or make every phone, app, language or feature available everywhere.

- A car’s USB port or touchscreen does not by itself mean the vehicle supports Android Auto. The car’s infotainment system or an aftermarket stereo must be compatible.
- Wired and wireless Android Auto have different phone, vehicle and connection requirements.
- Country support does not promise identical Assistant languages, apps, maps, traffic information, voice features or local-search coverage.
- Google warns that most Android Auto features may not work when the service is used outside supported countries.
Compatible apps are a separate matter: Android Auto supports driving-oriented categories such as music, messaging and news, but the available apps can vary. Google explains app compatibility in its app guidance.
What do you need to use Android Auto today?
Wired connection
Google’s current guidance calls for a phone running Android 9.0 or newer, an active mobile-data plan, a compatible car or aftermarket stereo, and a high-quality USB cable. Android Auto is not supported on Android Go devices.

Wireless connection
Wireless use requires a compatible phone and vehicle or stereo, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s general requirements include wireless projection compatibility for phones running Android 11 or newer; meeting that phone requirement alone does not ensure that a particular car supports wireless Android Auto.
Google notes additional European Union regulatory requirements for 5 GHz Wi-Fi in cars, and says Pixel 3 and newer Google phones comply with the stated requirement. Wireless support can still depend on the specific vehicle, phone model, trim and software. Check the manufacturer’s information for the exact combination.

Do you need to download an Android Auto app?
Usually not for use on a car display: Google says Android Auto is integrated into modern Android phones. An Android Auto icon may not appear in the app drawer, which does not by itself mean the feature is missing. Check Android settings or connect the phone to a compatible car. Individual music, messaging and other apps may still need to be installed. Google explains the integrated-phone setup here.
How to connect a phone to a compatible car
Complete setup while parked. Vehicle controls and prompts vary by manufacturer; follow the car’s instructions if they differ from these general steps.

Set up with a USB cable
- Put the vehicle in Park and turn on its infotainment system.
- Make sure the phone has mobile-data coverage.
- Connect it to the vehicle’s Android Auto-compatible USB port.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and vehicle screen, granting requested permissions and installing updates if prompted.
Set up wirelessly
- Confirm that both the phone and the specific vehicle or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services during setup.
- Put the car in Park and switch on its infotainment system.
- Use the vehicle’s voice-command or phone-pairing control, then pair the phone with the car over Bluetooth.
- Follow the setup prompts. Google says Android Auto should start within a few seconds after successful Bluetooth pairing.

For a wired connection
- Try the phone’s original cable or another high-quality data cable. Google recommends a cable shorter than 1 metre where possible and advises against USB hubs and extensions.
- Try another compatible USB port. Some ports provide charging only and do not carry data.
- Restart the infotainment system, check that Android Auto is enabled in the car settings, and check with the vehicle maker for any required firmware update.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance covers cable and vehicle checks. A manufacturer or dealer can confirm compatibility for a particular vehicle and market.

For a wireless connection
- Make sure Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services are on, and verify that both devices support wireless Android Auto and the phone supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Delete the existing Bluetooth pairing, put the car in Park and pair the phone again.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system, then consult the vehicle maker’s setup instructions.
If it works in one car but not another
Compatibility, firmware and projection settings can differ between vehicles. Android Auto settings include an “Earlier connected cars” area and an option to forget all cars before pairing again. Use those controls if stale pairings are getting in the way, then set up the car again.
What the six-country expansion did not guarantee
The 2021 announcement established official Android Auto availability in the six named countries, not feature parity across them. It does not establish that every Assistant language, third-party app, map detail, traffic feature or local search result is the same in every market. Nor does it establish support for every vehicle model or wireless configuration. Check app, phone and vehicle compatibility separately, and follow local hands-free and distracted-driving laws.
