For most older cameras, GPS units, PDAs and similar devices, the replacement you need is a USB-A male to 5-pin USB Mini-B male data cable.
Mini-B and Mini USB at a glance
| Question | Mini-B | “Mini USB” |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A defined USB connector type | A broad or informal shopping term |
| Typical use | Device port on older portable electronics | Usually shorthand for Mini-B |
| Typical contacts | Five contacts on standard USB 2.0 versions | Depends on the particular mini connector |
| Common cable search | USB-A to Mini-B, 5-pin, USB 2.0 | Verify the exact connector before ordering |
| Interchangeable with Micro-B? | No | No, despite similar names |
The USB-IF formally documented Mini-B as part of the USB 2.0 connector system (Mini-B engineering change notice). In ordinary retail listings, however, “Mini USB” commonly means that connector.
What the Mini USB family included
Mini-B
Mini-B is the familiar compact, trapezoidal device-side connector used on many older digital cameras, GPS receivers, MP3 players, PDAs, game controllers and portable drives. The standard version has five contacts: VBUS power, D−, D+, an ID contact and ground.
Mini-A and Mini-AB
Mini-A was intended mainly for the host side of USB On-The-Go (OTG). Mini-AB receptacles could accept either Mini-A or Mini-B plugs. They were uncommon in everyday consumer cables, and USB-IF later deprecated Mini-A and Mini-AB OTG usage as Micro-USB became the preferred implementation (USB-IF OTG compliance update). Do not buy a Mini-A cable merely because a listing says “Mini USB”; confirm the device’s required role and connector.

How to identify a Mini-B port
- It is smaller than standard USB-A and USB-B but relatively chunky compared with Micro-USB.
- The metal shell is usually a compact trapezoid or five-sided shape and accepts the plug in only one orientation.
- A conventional USB 2.0 Mini-B plug has five contacts.
- It is generally wider and taller than a Micro-B plug.
Do not rely on shell color. Manufacturers use different colors, and some proprietary camera or industrial connectors resemble Mini-B while using extra or nonstandard contacts. Compare the port with a known standard plug and check the device model or manual.
Mini-B versus Micro-B and USB-C
| Feature | Mini-B | Micro-B | USB-C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | Chunky trapezoid | Thinner, flatter asymmetric plug | Rounded rectangle |
| Typical era and use | Older cameras, GPS units and PDAs | Later phones, cameras and embedded devices | Current computers, phones and accessories |
| Reversible? | No | No | Yes |
| Fits a Mini-B receptacle? | Yes, when correctly specified | No | No without the proper adapter or cable |
| Typical data association | USB 2.0 | USB 2.0; separate USB 3.x Micro-B designs exist | Capabilities vary by device and cable |
TE Connectivity describes Mini USB as an early compact interface that preceded Micro-USB (TE Mini USB overview). A Micro-B cable will not fit a Mini-B port, and forcing either connector can damage the receptacle.

Does Mini-B mean USB 2.0 or 480 Mb/s?
Standard Mini-B is overwhelmingly associated with USB 2.0 implementations. USB 2.0 High-Speed allows signaling up to 480 Mb/s, and many Mini-B cables are marketed for that rate. That figure is a maximum under suitable conditions, not a guarantee from the connector shape.
- The device electronics must support High-Speed.
- The host port, cable construction and operating mode must also support it.
- Storage performance, drivers and software can limit real file-transfer speed.
For example, StarTech identifies its USB-A-to-Mini-B cable as a 5-pin USB 2.0 product rated up to 480 Mb/s (StarTech USB2HABM6). A cable cannot make a slower device operate faster.

Can a Mini-B cable charge a device?
Often, yes, but charging behavior depends on the host, the device’s charging circuit, cable wiring and any proprietary charging scheme. A Mini-B connection does not imply modern fast charging or USB Power Delivery. It may provide power while transferring data, but the connector alone does not establish a wattage or charging speed.
Which cable should you buy?
- Identify the device port. Confirm Mini-B rather than Micro-B, USB-C or a proprietary multi-pin connector. “5-pin Mini-B” is a useful search term.
- Match the host port. For a computer or charger with USB-A, choose a USB-A male-to-Mini-B male cable. For a USB-C-only host, use a USB-C-to-Mini-B cable or a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter with the standard cable.
- Require data if synchronization is needed. Look for “data and charging” or “data cable,” not just a power cable.
- Choose a practical length and orientation. Short cables suit travel and embedded equipment; desk setups commonly use 3- to 6-foot cables. Right-angle, left-angle, up-angle and down-angle versions can reduce strain on awkward ports.
- Check the exact device model. A correct physical plug cannot fix missing drivers, a dead battery, damaged storage or a proprietary transfer protocol.
Current examples illustrate the available formats: StarTech lists a 1-foot straight cable (USB2HABM1), a 1-meter up-angle cable (USBAMB1MU), a 2-meter down-angle cable (USBAMB2MD), and right- and left-angle 3-foot versions (right-angle, left-angle). A USB-A-to-Mini-B adapter cable is another option when you already have a USB-A cable (USBMUSBFM1).

Troubleshooting common failures
The device charges but does not transfer files
Charging uses the power conductors; data transfer additionally requires working D+ and D− conductors. Try a known-good data cable, another USB port and the device’s required software or driver. A charge-only cable, broken data wires or a device-specific synchronization mode can all produce this symptom.
The plug fits but the device is not recognized
- Confirm the port is standard Mini-B rather than a proprietary lookalike.
- Test another computer or host port.
- Inspect for bent contacts, debris or a recessed, damaged receptacle; do not force the plug.
- Check archived manufacturer specifications, drivers and any required device mode.
- Try a shorter, better-specified cable if the existing one is unusually long or poorly made.
A listing says “Mini USB 3.0”
Treat that wording cautiously. Standard consumer Mini-B is associated with USB 2.0; sellers sometimes confuse it with USB 3.x Micro-B or use “mini” loosely. Require an exact connector designation, product diagram and device-compatibility statement before ordering.

- TURN USB-A PORTS INTO USB-C: Convert the USB-A ports on your laptops, wall chargers, car chargers, hubs, or power banks into USB-C inputs for everyday charging and data transfer. Just plug the adapter into a USB-A port and connect your USB-C cable to charge or sync compatible devices.
- DESIGNED FOR USB 2.0 CHARGING & SYNC (NO VIDEO): Supports USB 2.0 data transfer up to 480 Mbps and charging up to 5V/2A, depending on your USB-A power source. Not for HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, or any other type of video output, and not for driving a dock’s main USB-C host cable or high-power USB-C fast-charging protocols (PD/PPS).
- ALUMINUM ALLOY HOUSING: Built with an aluminum alloy shell that helps with heat dissipation during use compared to plastic adapters. The metal body surrounds the internal USB 2.0 components and supports stable charging and data transfer during everyday plug-in, unplugging, and device connections.
- COMPACT ENOUGH TO LEAVE PLUGGED IN: Low-profile, lightweight design that sits close to the USB-A port, so it can stay plugged into your laptop, charger, or hub without getting in the way. Reduces wear from constant plugging/unplugging and lowers the chance of misplacing the adapter.
- VERSATILE USB-C ACCESSORY COMPATIBILITY: Works with USB-C cables, phones, tablets, earphones, flash drives, card readers, wireless adapters, and other low-power USB-C accessories. A simple, practical add-on to keep your older USB-A gear useful in a USB-C world.
Why Mini-B was replaced
Standard USB connectors were too large for many portable products, so Mini-B reduced the footprint. Micro-USB reduced it further, and USB-C later added a reversible plug and, when properly implemented, broader modern data and charging capabilities. Mini-B remains available for legacy equipment, industrial products, test fixtures and embedded systems, but it is no longer the default for new mainstream consumer devices.
Availability and observed prices
Mini-B replacement cables are still sold in straight, short, long and angled forms. On StarTech’s U.S. pages, prices displayed in August 2026 included $10.24 for the 6-foot USB2HABM6, $9.21 for the 1-foot USB2HABM1, approximately $9.21 for the 3-foot angled variants, and $9.21 for the 2-meter USBAMB2MD. These were observed prices, not guarantees; stock, regional fulfillment, shipping and manufacturer pricing can change.
Bottom line
If an older device says “Mini USB,” it probably needs Mini-B. The safest purchase is a clearly labeled 5-pin USB-A-to-Mini-B data-and-charging cable, matched to your host port and required length. Verify the connector rather than assuming that “mini,” Micro-B, Mini-A and Mini-B are interchangeable.
