YouTubeAuto for Android Auto: What Happened, and Does It Still Work?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTubeAuto was a real, unofficial app that brought YouTube video and web content to Android Auto in 2017. Its developer later renamed the project CarStream after Google blocked earlier versions. There is no reliable evidence that the old project is maintained or dependable with Android Auto in 2026, so treat APKs advertised as current releases as unverified—not as supported Google apps.

What was the YouTubeAuto app?

Kiran Kumar released YouTubeAuto on December 29, 2017. It was a web-based YouTube player designed to appear on a phone-projected Android Auto display. It was not made by Google, was not the official YouTube app, and was distributed outside Google Play.

The developer’s historical version notes describe features added over time, including YouTube search, trending videos, subscriptions, full-screen playback, speech-to-text search, and support for steering-wheel or other controllers. Later versions added local video, music, and image playback, limited background audio, custom URL loading, and night mode. These are historical features, not a promise that any current APK offers them or works today. Kiran Kumar’s project history and version notes

Was YouTubeAuto renamed CarStream?

Yes. The developer’s version history says the project was renamed CarStream around January 18–19, 2018, after Google repeatedly blocked earlier versions. CarStream was the renamed continuation of that developer’s project; it was not an official Google product. Developer’s project history

The names YouTubeAuto, CarStream, and “YouTube Auto” may appear on unrelated builds, forks, or APK mirrors. A familiar name does not establish who made a file, whether it has been modified, or whether it is maintained. Avoid treating a listing that says “latest” or “2026” as proof of authenticity.

Does YouTubeAuto still work with Android Auto in 2026?

The available evidence does not establish that the original YouTubeAuto or CarStream works reliably with current Android Auto releases, Android versions, or vehicles. The project page documents an active history in 2017–2018 and repeated blocking, but it does not provide a verified current compatibility list or a dependable current release. A later account also discussed Google blocking custom apps, but that is not enough to establish a universal current cutoff. Historical repost discussing blocking

Google’s current Android Auto documentation describes driver-optimized media, messaging, navigation, and templated experiences. Its parked-app documentation lists games as the supported parked-app category for Android Auto; it does not establish support for this old video app. Android Auto overview · Android Auto parked-app support

Do not rely on an old installation guide or a mirror’s compatibility claims as evidence that the app will install, appear in the launcher, authenticate, or play videos now. Current Android security rules, Android Auto behavior, vehicle restrictions, and YouTube-side changes can all affect an unofficial old build.

Why was it not in Google Play?

Contemporary coverage reported that YouTubeAuto was absent from Google Play because showing video on an Android Auto screen conflicted with the platform’s distribution and driver-safety requirements at the time. Android Central’s 2017 coverage · Android Authority’s coverage · 9to5Google’s coverage

Google’s current car-app guidance draws a practical distinction: Android Auto media apps are designed for driver-safe audio use, while video is treated primarily as a parked experience on Android Automotive OS. Android Auto can exit parked-app activities when motion is detected, and car-compatible apps are subject to quality and distraction requirements. How did the historical installation work?

The original setup involved sideloading an APK and enabling Android Auto’s developer settings. The following is a description of the historical process, not a verified 2026 installation guide. Menu labels and behavior may have changed, and the steps may no longer work.

  1. Install the YouTubeAuto APK on the Android phone.

  2. Open Android Auto settings and tap the information or version area repeatedly to enable developer mode.

Android Auto and Android Automotive OS are different

Video support on a built-in infotainment system does not mean an app will work through phone-based Android Auto. The platforms run apps differently and have different support rules.

Platform Where it runs What the current guidance establishes
Android Auto On an Android phone, with a projected interface on a compatible car display Driver-optimized experiences are supported; the parked-app documentation identifies games as the supported parked category.
Android Automotive OS On the vehicle’s built-in Android-based infotainment system Google’s car-media guidance treats video apps primarily as parked experiences; availability depends on the vehicle and software.

Safety, privacy, and legal considerations

A warning screen is not a safety feature

The developer’s changelog records a safety-warning popup in version 1.4.4 and later references to parking or handbrake behavior. A warning does not prevent distraction, guarantee that playback is blocked while moving, or establish regulatory approval. Developer’s changelog

Do not watch or operate video while driving. Even when a vehicle blocks video during motion, searching, interacting with a phone, or trying to bypass the restriction can distract the driver.

An old or mirrored APK cannot be assumed safe

Unofficial APKs can be modified or repackaged, and a long-unmaintained app may not receive security fixes. Risks include malware, credential exposure, outdated web components, excessive permissions, broken playback, and builds that no longer work with current Android Auto. The original developer described the project as a personal free-time project and linked to its project materials; that history is not a security assessment of files now hosted elsewhere. Legality depends on where and how it is used

Traffic laws differ by jurisdiction and may distinguish between a moving vehicle, a parked vehicle, driver-visible displays, and passenger use. Vehicle rules and YouTube’s terms or content licensing are separate questions. A warning inside the app is not legal protection; check local rules and keep video out of the driver’s view while driving.

Safer ways to use YouTube content in the car

For listening, use an official audio app

If the goal is music, spoken-word content, or background listening, use an Android Auto-compatible audio app rather than a video wrapper. Google’s Android Auto help lists YouTube Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, and podcasts as examples for voice-controlled media playback. Availability can depend on the app, account, and compatibility. Google Android Auto media help

YouTube Music is an official audio option, but it is not YouTubeAuto and does not provide unrestricted video playback on the Android Auto display. Spotify and podcast apps are alternatives when their catalogs and features fit what you want to hear. Check each app’s Android Auto support and any account or subscription requirements.

For video, wait until parked and use supported equipment

  • Watch on your phone before driving, or queue audio to listen during the trip.

The compact setup helps simplify crowded dashboard areas with chargers, audio equipment, Marine Antennas, GPS accessories, and other onboard electronics.
  • For passengers, use a separate device where lawful and safe, positioned so it does not distract the driver.

  • Use a built-in parked-video experience only if the vehicle and its software officially support it. An Android Automotive OS feature does not automatically work through Android Auto.

If you already installed an old build

  1. Disconnect the phone from the vehicle and uninstall YouTubeAuto or CarStream.

  2. Revoke any permissions granted to the app and sign out if that option is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. If you entered Google credentials into a build you do not trust, change your Google password and review account security.

  4. Restore Android Auto’s normal security settings. If official apps still behave abnormally, clear Android Auto’s cache and reconnect.

These steps reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that a compromised device is clean. If you suspect malware, use a trusted security assessment rather than assuming uninstalling the app removed every risk.
