First check your Windows version. HomeGroup can only be repaired on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 systems that still include the feature. Microsoft removed HomeGroup in Windows 10 version 1803; Windows 10 1803 and later, and Windows 11, cannot create, join, or leave a HomeGroup. Use standard network sharing instead. See Microsoft’s explanation at Microsoft Support.
What the error means
“Windows can’t set up a HomeGroup on this computer” is a legacy HomeGroup setup failure. It does not automatically mean that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is broken. Common causes include an unsupported Windows version, a Public network profile, disabled discovery or sharing, stopped peer-networking services, different workgroups, disabled IPv6, security software interference, or damaged HomeGroup identity data.
Check whether HomeGroup exists on your PC
- Press Win+R, type
winver, and press Enter. - On Windows 10, version 1803 or later means HomeGroup is permanently unavailable. Old “HomeGroup” entries that remain in a sharing menu are obsolete and do nothing.
- On Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, continue with the legacy checks below. Older Microsoft guidance says Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic could join a HomeGroup but could not create one; treat that as an edition limitation, not a repairable error. See the archived Microsoft Q&A guidance.
If you use Windows 10 version 1803 or later, or Windows 11
Do not try to reinstall services, edit the registry, or delete peer files to restore HomeGroup. Set up an ordinary SMB share instead.
Share a folder
- Open Settings > Network & internet, select the active connection, and set its profile to Private.
- Open Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. Turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing under the Private profile. If labels differ, search Settings for “advanced sharing settings.”
- In File Explorer, right-click the folder, choose Give access to > Specific people, select a user, and choose the required permission level.
- From another computer, enter
\ComputerNameShareNamein File Explorer’s address bar. You can also test\IP-addressShareName.
These are Microsoft’s current sharing steps: File sharing over a network in Windows. If you need one-off transfers, Nearby sharing or cloud storage may be simpler; a NAS is another option for a permanent shared location.

Before legacy troubleshooting: verify the network
- Connect both PCs to the same home router and the same non-guest Wi-Fi. Guest networks often isolate devices.
- Disconnect VPN software temporarily and account for Hyper-V, VirtualBox, or corporate security adapters that can alter routing.
- On Windows 7/8, open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and confirm the location is Home, not Public.
- Test basic reachability from Command Prompt with
ping COMPUTER-NAME. A failed ping can be caused by a firewall, so it is a clue rather than proof that sharing is impossible.
Legacy Windows 7 and 8/8.1 repair sequence
Match the workgroup
- Open Control Panel > System.
- Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, check the workgroup name on each PC.
- Use the same name and restart after changing it.
A workgroup helps older computers discover one another, but it is separate from HomeGroup and cannot bring HomeGroup back to unsupported Windows versions. Microsoft describes workgroups in its small-business network guidance.
Enable discovery and file sharing
- Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
- Choose Change advanced sharing settings.
- For the Home profile, enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing, then save.
Check IPv6
- Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
- Right-click the active adapter and choose Properties.
- Make sure Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is checked, select OK, and restart if requested.
IPv6 was part of Microsoft’s legacy HomeGroup troubleshooting. This step applies to supported legacy HomeGroup systems; it is not a guaranteed fix for modern SMB sharing.

- Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
Verify the required services
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - On a legacy system, check that these services are not disabled and that relevant ones can start: Peer Name Resolution Protocol, Peer Networking Grouping, Peer Networking Identity Manager, HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider, Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, and Network List Service.
- Start the specific service that is stopped, then retry HomeGroup setup. Do not change every service to Automatic; startup types and service accounts differ.
Archived Microsoft troubleshooting specifically calls out the peer services: Microsoft Q&A. If a service reports Error 1079, its logon account may not match the other services in its process. Historical guidance used the appropriate built-in account, such as NT AUTHORITYLocalService, for the affected legacy peer service; change only the service identified by the error. See the archived HP discussion quoting Microsoft guidance.
Test firewall, antivirus, and VPN interference
Temporarily disconnect a VPN and test with third-party firewall or antivirus network protection paused. If HomeGroup works, immediately re-enable protection and create a local-network exception for Windows File and Printer Sharing and discovery. Never leave security software disabled and do not open arbitrary ports.

Reset damaged PeerNetworking state
Use this last-resort procedure only on Windows versions that still support HomeGroup:
- Leave any existing HomeGroup.
- In
services.msc, stop Peer Networking Identity Manager. - Back up the contents of
C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataRoamingPeerNetworking. The folder is hidden and protected. - Rename or delete the contents, not the parent directory.
- Restart the service and reboot.
- Try creating or joining the HomeGroup again.
This resets the computer’s remembered HomeGroup identity, so you may need to rejoin or recreate the group. It is not a way to restore HomeGroup on Windows 10 version 1803 or later. If access is denied or you see 0x80630203, stop rather than repeatedly deleting files; permissions, service-account configuration, or broader system damage may require a restore point or operating-system repair. The procedure is documented in the archived Microsoft Q&A response.

Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| No computers appear in Network | Confirm Private/Home profile, discovery settings, Function Discovery services, firewall rules, router isolation, and VPN status. |
| A computer appears but a share will not open | Check the share and NTFS permissions, credentials, password-protected sharing, and firewall rules. |
\IP-addressShareName works but \ComputerNameShareName fails |
Investigate name discovery or name resolution; the share itself is reachable. |
| A peer service will not start | Read its dependency and logon error instead of changing every service; Error 1079 points to a service-account mismatch. |
| Windows 10 1803+ or Windows 11 shows HomeGroup text | Stop legacy repair attempts and configure a normal SMB share. |
Why enabling SMB1 is usually the wrong fix
Old guides often enable SMB 1.0/CIFS to restore the Computer Browser list. Microsoft says SMB1 is not installed by default on current Windows because of security concerns and recommends Function Discovery services for visibility: SMBv1 not installed by default in Windows.
Enable SMB1 only when a specific, irreplaceable legacy device or application requires it, the risk is accepted, and the feature is limited to the necessary machine. Disable it again afterward. It is not a general Windows-to-Windows HomeGroup solution.
Best Value
- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Bottom line for the error
On Windows 7 or 8/8.1, work through network profile, discovery, workgroup, IPv6, services, security software, and finally the backed-up PeerNetworking reset. On Windows 10 version 1803 or later and Windows 11, the error cannot be repaired because HomeGroup was removed. Use Private-network SMB sharing with Give access to > Specific people, then connect with a UNC path such as \ComputerNameShareName. Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so migrating obsolete installations is preferable to preserving a HomeGroup setup.
