It is a modified Windows 11 installation image created with NTDEV’s publicly available Tiny11 Builder scripts and a Windows 11 ISO. The regular build can be usable on a secondary or carefully backed-up PC, while Tiny11 Core is mainly a disposable testing or virtual-machine image because its servicing and recovery components are heavily reduced.
Build it yourself from clean Microsoft media rather than downloading an unknown prebuilt ISO. Tiny11 can reduce bundled software and storage use, but it cannot create a faster CPU, add RAM, fix missing drivers, or guarantee updates on unsupported hardware.
Why Tiny11 is attracting attention
Windows 10 reached normal end of support on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but Microsoft no longer provides its ordinary security, feature, fix, and technical-support cycle. Eligible consumer Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can use Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program through October 13, 2026. Microsoft lists regional enrollment choices that may include syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying $30 USD plus applicable tax.
That leaves owners of aging PCs weighing several different goals: keep Windows compatibility, improve responsiveness, retain supported updates, avoid spending money, or simply keep an old machine useful. Tiny11 is one option—not automatically the best one.

What Tiny11 actually is
NTDEV’s Tiny11 Builder is a set of PowerShell scripts. You supply a Windows 11 ISO, mount it, and run the builder locally. It removes selected bundled applications and components and creates a new installation image. Microsoft’s official ISO and installation-media page is here.
Tiny11 is therefore an unofficial, modified Windows installation. The builder does not provide a Windows license, and it does not turn an unsupported computer into a supported Windows 11 device. Activation still depends on an appropriate license or eligible upgrade relationship; consult Microsoft’s license terms for the applicable terms.
Regular Tiny11
The tiny11maker.ps1 workflow removes substantial bundled content while attempting to retain normal serviceability. The README says users can add languages, updates, and features later, but that is an intended design rather than a promise that every future Windows release will behave like an untouched Microsoft image.
Tiny11 Core
The tiny11coremaker.ps1 workflow removes much more, including components associated with the Component Store, Windows Defender, Windows Update, and Windows Recovery Environment. NTDEV documents Core as a testing, development, or virtual-machine image. It is not the normal choice for a primary computer: removed features cannot simply be restored, and normal Windows Update servicing is not expected to work.

What gets removed—and why that matters
Exact removals vary with the builder revision, Windows release, architecture, and selected script. Documented examples include Microsoft Edge, OneDrive, Internet Explorer, Media Player, Quick Assist, Tablet PC Math, and other consumer applications and components.

Removing an app is not always isolated. Components can be dependencies for optional features, language packs, drivers, Microsoft Store applications, recovery tools, or third-party software. “Less bloat” can mean less storage use and a simpler installation, but it also means a smaller safety margin when something must be repaired later.
Can Tiny11 make an old PC run Windows 11?
Microsoft’s supported Windows 11 baseline includes a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, a display larger than 9 inches at 720p or better, and internet access for updates and some features. Details are listed in Microsoft’s requirements documentation.
Tiny11 reduces the operating-system image; it does not supply missing hardware capabilities.
- A 2 GB machine may boot but remain unstable or unpleasant.
- An old CPU may lack required instruction support or have poor driver compatibility.
- A mechanical hard drive can remain the main bottleneck.
- Weak integrated graphics can still struggle with modern browsers, video, and accelerated applications.
- Unsupported hardware may install yet receive updates inconsistently or fail during a later feature update.
Tiny11 also does not necessarily remove every Windows 11 hardware check. Writing an ISO with a tool such as Rufus and bypassing TPM, Secure Boot, or CPU checks are separate decisions with separate risks. Rufus describes its options and cautions in its official FAQ; a bypass does not guarantee long-term update eligibility.
Tiny11 regular versus Tiny11 Core
| Characteristic | Tiny11 regular | Tiny11 Core |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Possible everyday use after testing | Testing, development, or a VM |
| Serviceability | Designed to retain serviceability | Not normally serviceable |
| Later languages, updates, and features | Intended to remain addable | README says they cannot be added after creation |
| Windows Update | Intended to remain usable | Removed or disabled by the Core design |
| Recovery environment | More suitable for real hardware | May be removed |
| Primary-PC recommendation | Only for informed users | Not recommended |
These distinctions come from the Tiny11 Builder repository. Do not treat Core as merely a smaller regular build.

How to build Tiny11 safely
Prepare first
- A clean Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
- The official NTDEV Tiny11 Builder repository.
- A separate, supported Windows PC with administrator access.
- Free storage for the ISO, mounted image, scratch files, and output ISO.
- A blank USB drive large enough for installation media.
- A complete backup of the target PC and a Windows recovery option.
- A valid Windows license if activation is required.
- Manufacturer drivers—especially network, storage, chipset, graphics, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth—saved offline.
Read the script if you are comfortable with PowerShell, keep the original Microsoft ISO, and record the source build, edition, architecture, and builder revision. Avoid random “Tiny11 ISO” download pages. NTDEV recommends using the builder rather than relying on old prebuilt images; its list is at this page.
Run the documented builder process
- Download and mount the Microsoft Windows 11 ISO in File Explorer.
- Download Tiny11 Builder from the official repository.
- Open PowerShell 5.1 as Administrator.
- For this session only, run:
Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process - Run the script, replacing the paths and drive letters:
C:/path/to/your/tiny11/script.ps1 -ISO <letter> -SCRATCH <letter> - Enter the mounted ISO’s drive letter without the colon when prompted.
- Select the Windows edition/SKU.
- Wait for the script to produce
tiny11.isoin the extracted script directory.
Test the generated ISO in a virtual machine before installing it on irreplaceable hardware. Keep the original media and a recovery USB available.
Creating the USB and installing
Rufus is a common utility for writing the generated ISO to a USB drive. Writing an ISO is ordinary media creation; bypassing Windows 11 checks is an unsupported-installation choice, not a Tiny11 feature. Rufus warns that aggressive RAM or storage bypasses can lead to poor performance, crashes, or update problems.
A clean installation erases the target system unless you choose a supported migration path. Confirm backups, disconnect drives that must not be touched, and have drivers ready before starting. After installation, verify:
- Activation status is clear in Windows Settings.
- Internet access works.
- Device Manager has no unknown devices.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, audio, touchpad, webcam, Bluetooth, sleep, brightness, and graphics work.
- Windows Update behaves as expected on the regular build.
- Microsoft Store and
wingetwork if you need them; the repository notes thatwingetmay need updating first. - .NET versions and required optional Windows features install.
- Browsers, Office, printers, VPN clients, games, and accessibility tools work.
- Recovery options and backups are available.
The repository also notes that updates can cause some applications, including Outlook or Dev Home, to reappear. It includes an ARM64-specific warning involving OneDriveSetup.exe; check the current README for architecture-specific details.

Updates, security, and recovery
Regular Tiny11 is intended to remain serviceable, but no modified image or unsupported hardware configuration guarantees every future update. A feature update may restore removed applications, require stripped components, fail, or change the removal behavior. Rebuild from a fresh Microsoft ISO when moving to a new Windows release, back up before feature updates, and test changes on a spare machine or VM.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Core is a different category. Its documentation says that removing the Component Store prevents normal Windows Update operation and that languages, updates, and features cannot be added after creation. Do not use Core where security updates or dependable recovery are required.
Building locally from Microsoft media reduces the supply-chain risk of an unknown premodified ISO, but it does not make Tiny11 official or risk-free. Potential problems include missing Defender or recovery tools, incomplete servicing, unsupported drivers, unreproducible changes, and applications that expect standard Windows components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Tiny11 actually faster?
It can reduce installed size, bundled applications, Start-menu clutter, and some background activity. Those benefits are workload-dependent and do not constitute a guaranteed benchmark improvement. Browsers can consume substantial memory regardless of the base image, and the CPU still determines application performance.
On many old computers, replacing a hard drive with an SSD or adding compatible RAM produces a larger practical improvement than removing Windows applications. Check upgradeability, memory limits, storage form factor, cooling, and battery health before reinstalling an operating system.

Alternatives to Tiny11
| Situation | Best first choice |
|---|---|
| PC officially supports Windows 11 | Standard Microsoft Windows 11 |
| PC is usable and needs a short Windows transition | Windows 10 ESU through October 13, 2026, if eligible |
| Windows-specific software is essential and the PC is expendable | Regular Tiny11 after backup and testing |
| Very low-resource disposable VM | Tiny11 Core, without normal-servicing expectations |
| Web, email, documents, and basic use | Lightweight Linux |
| Slow hard drive or minimal RAM | SSD or RAM upgrade |
| Very old hardware or unusable drivers | Replacement, Linux testing, or offline repurposing |
Standard Windows 11
Use the supported Microsoft image when compatibility, recovery, updates, and official support matter most. It is larger and more bundled, but it is the supported baseline.
Windows 10 ESU
ESU is a bridge for an otherwise dependable Windows 10 PC, not a permanent modernization plan. It supplies eligible security updates through October 13, 2026, without adding feature improvements or ordinary technical support. Enrollment and pricing vary by region; see Microsoft’s ESU page.
Lightweight Linux
Linux Mint Xfce, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Debian with a lightweight desktop, and ChromeOS Flex are worth considering for browser- and document-centered work. Start with the official project pages: Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and ChromeOS Flex. Linux avoids a modified Windows image and commonly has lower hardware demands, but Windows-only applications, anti-cheat games, proprietary drivers, and enterprise tools may require workarounds or may not work.
Hardware upgrades or replacement
Check an SSD, additional compatible RAM, cooling maintenance, battery replacement, firmware, and startup software before replacing the operating system. If the CPU, firmware, or drivers are fundamentally too old, a refurbished or new PC can be safer than maintaining an unsupported installation.

Choose standard Windows 11 on supported hardware. Choose Windows 10 ESU as a short transition where eligibility and hardware make sense. Choose regular Tiny11 only when Windows compatibility is important, you can build the image yourself, and you accept backup, testing, and rebuild responsibilities. Reserve Tiny11 Core for disposable testing or virtual machines. If your work is mainly web and documents, Linux—or a hardware upgrade—may solve the underlying problem more cleanly than a stripped Windows image.
