Windows 10 Cortana Event Viewer Error 10001 (DCOM): What It Means and How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DistributedCOM Event ID 10001 mentioning Microsoft.Windows.Cortana or SearchUI.exe is not automatically dangerous. It records a failed attempt to start a packaged Windows component. If Windows Search and Start work normally, the entry may be diagnostic noise. If Search, Start, or related shell functions fail, use the event’s package name and HRESULT to choose a repair path—without changing DCOM permissions or deleting protected system files.

What the Cortana Event ID 10001 entry means

In Event Viewer, the provider is Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM, normally under Windows Logs > System. Event ID 10001 means Windows could not activate an out-of-process COM or packaged application server. DCOM is the activation mechanism reporting the failure; the event does not prove that the DCOM service itself is broken.

A documented Windows 10 example names a package similar to Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.13.0.18362_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy! and a server such as CortanaUI.AppX...mca. Its launch command points to C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewySearchUI.exe. See the Microsoft community record for the complete example: Microsoft Q&A: Cortana error in Event Viewer.

The event number is only a starting point. The package, executable path, server name, and error code identify the actual failure. Cortana branding can refer to the Windows Search shell, not necessarily a voice-assistant problem.

  • Please remember that this DVD does not come with a KEY CODE. You will need to obtain a Windows Key Code in order to use the reinstall option

Capture the complete event before changing anything

  1. Open Event Viewer.
  2. Go to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Filter or sort for source DistributedCOM and event ID 10001.
  4. Open a recent entry and inspect General, then Details > XML.
  5. Record the full package name, executable path, value after -ServerName:, decimal or hexadecimal error code, timestamp, and any nearby AppModel-Runtime, Search, Application Error, or Windows Error Reporting events.

Entries naming Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost... are related shell-package activation failures, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. A separate DistributedCOM Event ID 10016 is a permission-related event; Microsoft says many 10016 entries are expected and should not be “fixed” by taking ownership of registry keys. That guidance is not a remedy for Event ID 10001: Microsoft’s Event ID 10016 guidance.

First decision: is Windows Search actually broken?

Test the function before attempting a repair.

  • Open Start and type a known application or file.
  • Use the taskbar Search box and check whether results appear.
  • Confirm that Start opens and remains responsive.
  • Check for SearchUI.exe crashes, permanently indexing results, or multiple AppModel-Runtime failures.

If these features work and the only symptom is a repeated 10001 entry, monitor it rather than editing DCOM permissions. If Search or Start is broken, the event is useful evidence of a package, profile, registration, policy, or component-store problem.

What error code 2147942667 tells you

One documented Cortana event contains decimal code 2147942667, equivalent to HRESULT 0x8007010B. That HRESULT indicates an invalid directory or path condition in that case. It is an example, not a universal meaning for Cortana 10001 events. Your event may contain a different code and therefore a different cause; decode and investigate the value shown in your own entry.

Repair steps, from safest to most disruptive

1. Restart and check the last available updates

Restart Windows, then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install updates offered for your edition. Do not assume an update will remove the event. Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; in 2026, update availability depends on the edition, servicing arrangement, and whether an organization has extended support. The date and recovery options are documented by Microsoft at Reset your PC and Windows support information.

2. Test with a new local user

Create a temporary local account and test Search there. Microsoft’s Search guidance uses this comparison to separate per-user corruption from a system-wide installation problem: Fix problems in Windows Search.

  • Works in the new account: the original profile’s Search data or registry state is likely damaged.
  • Fails in every account: investigate component corruption, package registration, policy, security software, or update damage.

3. Repair the component store, then protected system files

Back up important files first. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and retest Search. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store used by SFC: Use DISM and SFC to repair Windows files and System File Checker instructions.

  • DISM: “The operation completed successfully”: continue with SFC.
  • SFC found and repaired files: restart and test again.
  • SFC found no integrity violations: Windows file corruption was not detected; continue with package or profile steps if Search remains broken.
  • SFC cannot perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode or move to recovery options.
  • DISM fails: record the exact error instead of repeatedly running unrelated commands.

If Windows Update cannot supply repair files, Microsoft documents a matching installation source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough to be valid; do not use an arbitrary or mismatched ISO.

4. Reset Search using the correct Windows 10 version

Windows 10 version 1809 or earlier

  1. Select Start.
  2. Right-click Cortana.
  3. Select More > App settings.
  4. Select Reset.

This is the legacy Cortana procedure, not a universal Windows 10 fix.

Windows 10 version 1903 and later

Newer releases use the Windows Search package. Follow Microsoft’s version-specific procedure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up important data and confirm the package path exists.
  2. Delete the affected user’s folder %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy.
  3. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch, then delete the Search key.
  4. Open PowerShell as administrator and run:
    Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewyAppxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
  5. Restart the PC and test Search.

Search relevance may rebuild temporarily. These steps rebuild Search state rather than deleting personal documents. On some earlier builds the profile folder is named Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy; do not substitute package names blindly. The installed package and Windows version determine the valid path. Follow Microsoft’s instructions at Fix problems in Windows Search.

5. Use app Repair or Reset only when available

For an AppX or MSIX app, Repair attempts recovery while retaining app data. Reset refreshes the app but permanently removes its app data and preferences. Controls vary by Windows 10 build, and a legacy Cortana installation may not expose them in Settings. Microsoft explains the distinction at Manage MSIX app reset and repair.

6. Check policy, security, and debloating changes

Review what changed immediately before the events began: registry cleaners, privacy or debloating scripts, AppX removal, AppLocker or other application-control policy, third-party security software, System Restore, a failed feature update, or manual permission changes to WindowsApps, SystemApps, or protected registry keys. Microsoft separates registration, package corruption, permissions, and AppLocker causes in its modern app troubleshooting guidance.

Do not permanently disable antivirus or security controls. If a vendor-approved temporary test is necessary, follow that vendor’s procedure and re-enable protection immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Replace the profile or use recovery

If Search works in a new account, moving to a replacement profile is often safer than forcing repairs into a damaged one. For system-wide failures, use System Restore when a suitable restore point exists. As a later option, choose Reset this PC > Keep my files after backing up: Windows is reinstalled, personal files are retained, but applications and settings are removed. Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows image. Microsoft describes these choices at Reset your PC. A supported Windows upgrade or reinstall is usually more sustainable than extensive repair of an obsolete Windows 10 installation.

Use the finding to choose the next action

Finding Likely interpretation Action
10001 only; Search and Start work Transient activation failure or diagnostic noise Monitor; do not edit DCOM permissions
Search fails in one profile Per-user Search state is damaged Use a new profile or version-appropriate profile reset
Search fails in every account System package, component store, policy, or update issue Run DISM/SFC, re-register the correct package, and review policy
Event names Microsoft.Windows.Cortana and SearchUI.exe Legacy Cortana/Search implementation Match steps to the Windows 10 version
Event names Microsoft.Windows.Search Newer Search package Use the newer Search reset and registration path
Event follows registry cleaning or debloating Registration or permissions may have been altered Undo the change if possible; repair Windows components
Event follows System Restore Package-version or profile mismatch is possible Re-register Search and inspect AppModel-Runtime events
Code differs from 2147942667 Different failure condition Decode the actual event code
10016 appears as well Separate DCOM event type Do not conflate it with 10001
DISM/SFC succeed but the event continues Profile or package registration remains faulty Apply the version-specific Search reset

What not to do

  • Do not take ownership of DCOM registry keys or change launch permissions just to remove a 10001 entry.
  • Do not delete files manually from C:WindowsSystemApps or protected package directories.
  • Do not run one PowerShell registration command against every Windows 10 build; verify the installed package path first.
  • Do not confuse Event IDs 10001, 10010, and 10016.
  • Do not use registry cleaners or unverified “one-click” AppX fixers.

When to stop troubleshooting

Move to a new profile, repair installation, reset, or supported OS migration when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, the package path is missing, Search fails for every account, multiple built-in apps also fail, or the machine shows filesystem corruption, malware, or a failed update. Since standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, a supported Windows release may be the safer long-term resolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ignore Event ID 10001 if Search works?

Usually yes. If Start and Search work and there are no crashes or hangs, monitor the entry rather than changing DCOM permissions.

Is Cortana the same as Windows Search in this event?

Not exactly. Older Windows 10 builds used a Cortana package, while later builds use Windows Search; a Cortana-named event can therefore describe shell Search activation rather than voice-assistant use.

Does resetting Search delete my documents?

The documented Search reset rebuilds package and user Search state, not personal documents. Back up important data before deleting package data or resetting Windows.
