Microsoft Edge accounted for 11.14% of worldwide desktop browser page views in July 2026, its highest share in the May–July figures reported by StatCounter. Google Chrome still led with 70.67%—about 6.3 times Edge’s share. The figures point to a stronger second-place position for Edge, not an imminent challenge to Chrome.

Worldwide desktop browser shares in July 2026

StatCounter’s figures measure observed browser page views, not the percentage of people who own, install, or choose each browser. In that worldwide desktop category, the July 2026 ranking was:

Browser Share of desktop page views Position
Google Chrome 70.67% 1st
Microsoft Edge 11.14% 2nd
Mozilla Firefox 6.43% 3rd
Apple Safari 5.66% 4th
Opera 2.00% 5th
Samsung Internet 1.60% 6th

StatCounter’s worldwide desktop browser-share figures provide the July values. These are shares of measured page views, not user counts.

What Edge’s “record” means

Edge’s reported desktop share rose from 9.94% in May 2026 to 10.45% in June and 11.14% in July. That is an increase of 1.20 percentage points from May to July, or about 12.1% relative to its May share. From June to July alone, the gain was 0.69 percentage points.

Those figures establish a new high among the May–July 2026 values cited here. They do not, by themselves, establish an all-time record across StatCounter’s complete historical series. The careful description is a new high in the latest reported period, rather than an unqualified all-time record.

Chrome moved from 72.24% in June to 70.67% in July. That one-month drop does not show that a corresponding number of people abandoned Chrome: page-view shares can change with browsing frequency, traffic mix, geography, seasonality, or measurement variation. The monthly figures are available through StatCounter’s desktop browser-share series.

Why Edge is not close to overtaking Chrome

In July, Chrome’s lead over Edge was 59.53 percentage points. Chrome’s share was approximately 6.3 times Edge’s; Edge’s share was about 15.8% of Chrome’s, not 15.8% of the overall desktop market.

Edge’s gain matters because it is consolidating its place as the leading alternative in the worldwide desktop category. But the current gap gives no basis for calling it a near-term “Chrome killer.” A straight-line projection from only three monthly readings would be unreliable: a short rise does not establish that the same pace will continue.

How StatCounter measures browser share

StatCounter says its Global Stats draw on more than 3 billion page views per month across more than 1 million websites. It identifies the browser and operating system associated with page views, removes bot activity, and makes a small adjustment for Chrome prerendering. Its results are estimates of observed web usage, not a census of browsers installed on devices. See the StatCounter FAQ and StatCounter factsheet for its methodology.

  • A person using more than one browser can contribute page views to more than one browser’s total.
  • People who browse frequently, and sites that receive substantial traffic, have more influence on the result than infrequent browsing does.
  • Browser identification, the websites in the sample, and shifts in the mix of traffic can affect the estimate.
  • Results vary by device category, country, and month, so a desktop figure cannot stand in for all devices.

Why Edge may be gaining—and why Chrome remains ahead

The page-view figures show what happened, but they do not establish why. Several market factors could help Edge’s desktop position: it is preinstalled and promoted in Windows, integrates with Microsoft services, and shares the Chromium foundation used by Chrome. That common foundation helps reduce compatibility concerns for many websites and extensions. Microsoft also provides organizations with a browser-usage report focused on how users access Microsoft 365 services through Edge; that is an enterprise management tool, not a measure of worldwide consumer share. Microsoft’s report documentation describes its purpose. Microsoft’s developer documentation also identifies Edge’s Chromium basis and tracks compatibility-impacting differences from Chromium: Edge site-impacting changes.

Chrome’s lead has several plausible structural explanations: its distribution and Google account integration on Android, familiarity among consumers and businesses, a broad extension ecosystem, cross-device synchronization, and established workplace support. Google documents enterprise reporting and management for Chrome on Windows, one indication that Chrome’s presence extends beyond individual consumer choice: Chrome Enterprise monitoring documentation. These factors offer market context; the July figures do not isolate their contribution or prove that Edge gained at Chrome’s expense.

There is also an important distinction between browser products and browser engines. Edge and Chrome compete for users and distribution, but both are Chromium-based. Edge gaining share does not necessarily mean that the web is becoming less dependent on Chromium as an engine.

Desktop share is not the same as all-device share

Edge’s 11.14% figure applies to worldwide desktop page views, not smartphones and tablets. A U.S. snapshot from June 2026 illustrates how the ranking changes with the scope. StatCounter’s all-platform U.S. figures showed Chrome at 52.26%, Firefox at 8.78%, and Edge at 7.54%. For U.S. desktop and tablet traffic that month, it showed Chrome at 58.91%, Edge at 11.90%, Firefox at 13.53%, and Brave at 2.51%.

These are different geographies, device categories, and periods from the worldwide desktop July result, so they should not be combined as if they were one ranking. They do show why any browser-share claim needs to specify its scope. The June snapshots are listed in StatCounter’s U.S. all-platform series and U.S. desktop-and-tablet series.

Which browser makes sense for you?

Market share measures observed usage, not which browser will suit a particular person. A practical choice depends on the services, devices, workplace policies, and features you rely on:

  • Consider Edge if you mainly use Windows, Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Outlook, or Teams; want Chromium compatibility; or need a browser your employer manages or supports. A separate work profile can also keep work accounts apart from personal browsing.
  • Consider Chrome if you rely on Google services, Android synchronization, a workplace Chrome standard, or extensions and workflows already configured for Chrome.
  • Consider Firefox if a non-Chromium browser engine, customization, or Mozilla’s privacy approach is a priority.
  • Consider Brave or another Chromium alternative if you want Chromium compatibility with built-in privacy or ad-blocking features. More aggressive blocking can cause some sites to behave differently, so you may need site-specific exceptions.

A large share is not proof that a browser is faster, safer, or better for every user. It describes usage in a defined measurement category; personal fit depends on your own needs.
