Alienware AW3420DW 34-Inch Ultrawide Gaming Monitor Review (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The Alienware AW3420DW remains a smooth, well-built 3440×1440 ultrawide for NVIDIA PC gaming, but in 2026 it makes sense primarily as a tested used or refurbished purchase. Buy only at a substantial discount and only if you can live without HDR, OLED-level contrast, USB-C, HDMI 2.1 and refresh rates above 120Hz. At near-new pricing, newer IPS, VA and OLED monitors are better values.

What the AW3420DW is—and is not

The AW3420DW is a 34.14-inch curved Nano IPS monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 3440×1440 resolution, 120Hz maximum refresh rate and a native NVIDIA G-SYNC module. It is an older premium model, not an OLED display and not an HDR monitor. Dell still hosts manuals and service documentation, while RTINGS identifies the OLED AW3423DW as its replacement.

That distinction matters when shopping today: the AW3420DW can be excellent for the right used-market buyer, but its original premium positioning no longer reflects its feature set.

The advertised 2ms figure applies to the Extreme overdrive mode; it is not a promise that every pixel transition completes in 2ms without overshoot. Independent measurements of response time and input lag are more useful for judging playability.

#1 Best Overall
Alienware 120Hz UltraWide Gaming 34 Inch Curved Monitor with WQHD (3440 x 1440) Anti-Glare Display, 2ms Response Time, Nvidia G-Sync, Lunar Light - AW3420DW
  • Experience breathtaking views with a combination of immersive features
  • Aspect Ratio is 21:9; Viewing Angle is 178º (H) / 178º (V); Brightness is 350 cd/m²(typical)
  • A 1900R curved, wide 21: 9 display maximizes the field of view and provides an even, consistent viewing experience
  • With a WQHD (3440x1440) resolution, the image is sharp and detailed delivering an immersive experience
  • A 120Hz refresh rate with NVIDIA G-SYNC provides buttery smooth gameplay and realism

Image quality and viewing experience

3440×1440 remains a useful resolution

At 34 inches, 3440×1440 gives substantially more horizontal room than a 2560×1440 16:9 monitor without the GPU load of a 4K ultrawide. Supported games can show a wider field of view, and the desktop comfortably accommodates two large windows, a timeline with tool panels, or a document beside reference material. Racing, flight simulation, role-playing and cinematic games benefit especially from the 21:9 canvas.

Ultrawide support is not universal. Unsupported titles may show side bars, cropped or stretched menus, or an unchanged field of view. Competitive games can also apply their own rules to 21:9 resolutions.

Color and contrast

The IPS panel provides wide viewing angles, consistent color across the screen and attractive SDR output. However, independent testing found low contrast and sub-par black uniformity. In a dark room, black areas can look gray and IPS glow or backlight bleed can distract in horror games, dark science-fiction scenes and nighttime films. Bright ambient lighting makes those weaknesses less apparent, and uniformity varies from one unit to another.

  • Game longer: Lock in for marathon gaming sessions with a dedicated console mode and hardware-based low blue light solution that reduces eye strain while preserving color.

There is no HDR support. Vivid SDR color should not be confused with HDR, and the monitor cannot deliver OLED-style black levels or HDR highlights.

Gaming performance

RTINGS describes the AW3420DW as smooth and responsive, with excellent measured response behavior and very low input lag; TechRadar likewise praised its 120Hz operation, advertised 2ms mode and G-SYNC performance. The combination remains enjoyable for general gaming and immersive single-player play.

  • Best fit: NVIDIA GPU owners, single-player gamers, sim racers and users who value IPS color and screen area.
  • Less suitable: esports players targeting 165Hz, 240Hz or higher; buyers who require HDR; and anyone prioritizing OLED contrast.

Native G-SYNC is a hardware feature of this model, but it does not automatically make it superior to newer G-SYNC Compatible or FreeSync displays. AMD owners should verify compatibility with their particular GPU and driver rather than assuming either guaranteed support or guaranteed failure.

Alienware 34 240Hz QD-OLED Curved Gaming Monitor - AW3425DW - 34.2-inch WQHD (3440 x 1440) 0.03ms Display, 1800R Curve, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, VESA AdaptiveSync, DisplayHDR TrueBlack 400

  • Unrivaled speed: Adaptive sync technologies like NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA AdaptiveSync make games feel effortlessly smooth.

Work, media and ergonomics

The wide desktop is practical for coding, spreadsheets, editing timelines, browser research and communications beside a primary application. Text is sharp at 3440×1440, and the stand adjusts for height, tilt and swivel. VESA mounting is supported, and AlienFX lighting plus the on-screen controls preserve the distinctive Alienware design.

Limitations include mediocre reflection handling in bright rooms, no portrait rotation, no USB-C video input or laptop charging, no built-in KVM, and no modern picture-by-picture conveniences identified in the reviewed feature set. The 1900R curve can also be less appropriate when perfectly straight geometry is essential.

Ports and device compatibility

Use DisplayPort directly from the graphics card for a PC setup targeting 3440×1440 at 120Hz with G-SYNC. The user guide documents DisplayPort 1.2 for that mode; HDMI 1.4 is more limited and should not be treated as equivalent. The monitor also has a USB upstream connection, four downstream USB ports and headphone/audio-out connections.

  • IMMERSE IN INGINITE COLOR: Quantum Dot Display Technology enables a slim panel design and delivers a superior color performance with a higher peak luminance and greater color gamut range vs WOLED (White OLED).
  • CRITICIAL CREATIVITY: Creator Mode offers precise color-critical work for content creators and gamers, allowing choice between native DCI-P3 and sRGB color spaces, and adjusting gamma settings.
  • Comfort Viewing: This gaming monitor offers height adjustment, anti-glare screen, swivel and tilt adjustments, and a curved display for personalized viewing and engaging pictures, ensuring immersive experiences.

Compared with current displays, it lacks HDMI 2.1, USB-C display input and power delivery. That makes it a poor match for modern laptops relying on one-cable docking and for console buyers seeking HDMI 2.1 features. Docks, adapters, KVMs and receivers can also prevent the full resolution or refresh rate, so test with a direct GPU connection first.

Used-buying checklist

A used unit’s condition matters more than its launch reputation. Before completing a purchase, check:

  • 3440×1440 at 120Hz in Windows and the GPU control panel.
  • G-SYNC operation over DisplayPort.
  • Every input, USB downstream port, joystick control and RGB lighting zone.
  • Full-screen white, black, red, green and blue images for dead pixels, tint and uneven illumination.
  • Backlight bleed and IPS glow in a dark room; severe bright patches or pressure damage are reasons to return the monitor.
  • Stand neck, base, VESA hardware, cable cover, power cable, DisplayPort cable and USB upstream cable.
  • Flicker, image retention, intermittent signal loss and any unusual noise.
  • A written return policy and the actual warranty-transfer status. Do not assume Dell coverage transfers to a second owner.

Troubleshooting common problems

G-SYNC is unavailable

  1. Connect the GPU directly with DisplayPort.
  2. Set 3440×1440 and 120Hz in Windows and the graphics driver.
  3. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and choose Display → Set up G-SYNC.
  4. Enable G-SYNC for full-screen or windowed mode as needed.
  5. Confirm the monitor’s on-screen display reports the expected refresh rate, then test a known VRR-compatible game.
  6. If flicker or dropouts continue, try another DisplayPort cable and less aggressive overdrive settings.

The monitor is stuck at a lower refresh rate

Check the cable, Windows advanced display settings, GPU driver settings and any dock, adapter, KVM or receiver in the signal path. HDMI may be the limiting factor. A direct DisplayPort connection from a GPU capable of driving 3440×1440 is the cleanest diagnostic.

Alienware AW3423DWF Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor - 34-inch Quantum Dot, 0.1Ms 165Hz 21:9, 99.3% DCI-P3 Color Gamut, VESA DisplayHDR, 400, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro - Black
  • INFINITELY IMMERSIVE: Quantum Dot Display Technology enables a slim panel design and delivers a superior color performance with a higher peak luminance and greater color gamut range vs WOLED (White OLED) by taking the impressive qualities of OLED (such as true blacks & infinite contrast ratio) and enhances color performance by directly converting blue light into the primary colors of red and green through a Quantum Dot pixel layer.
  • STUTTER-FREE SPEED: Experience ultra-low latency gameplay, support for HDR and cinematic color, plus smooth, tear-free gaming thanks to AMD FreeSync Premium Pro Technology and VESA AdaptiveSync Display certification.

The height adjustable stand with height markers and the tilt, swivel, and slant capabilities allow for easy viewing adjustment.
  • FOR CRITICAL CREATING: For content creators and game developers who require precise color-critical work, the new Creator Mode feature was designed for you. • QUALITY ASSURANCE GUARANTEED: The new Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor comes with improved OLED reliability and a 3-year premium warranty, including coverage for OLED burn-in, for additional peace of mind.

Games show bars or distorted menus

This is usually a game-support limitation, not a panel fault. Check the title’s aspect-ratio and field-of-view settings and use a reputable community fix where appropriate; no setting can make every game natively ultrawide.

The image looks washed out

Check that HDR is not being forced in the operating system, reduce excessive brightness, verify the GPU’s RGB range and select an appropriate color profile. Aged or defective panels can also look faded, so compare with a known-good display.

LG 34GN850-B/34GP83A-class IPS Generally higher refresh, better brightness and HDR compatibility, with FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatibility Users prioritizing newer IPS features and broader VRR options.

Final buying guidance

  • Excellent buy: a fully tested used or refurbished unit at an unusually low price with return protection.
  • Acceptable buy: a moderate used price when native G-SYNC, IPS viewing angles and 120Hz are specifically what you want.
  • Skip: near-new pricing, unclear condition or warranty, missing essentials, or any requirement for HDR, OLED blacks, USB-C, HDMI 2.1 or 240Hz-class performance.

The AW3420DW has not become a bad monitor; it has become a price-sensitive one. Its smooth 120Hz gaming, useful ultrawide workspace and solid ergonomics still hold up, while its missing HDR and older connectivity define the limits of a sensible 2026 purchase.
