Garmin’s quatix 5 was built for life on the sea—but it is no longer new

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Garmin announced the quatix 5 on May 9, 2017. It was a genuine marine-focused GPS smartwatch, but Garmin now lists it as discontinued. Its defining advantage was integration with compatible Garmin chartplotters, autopilots and marine accessories—not simply water resistance. In 2026, it makes sense mainly as an inexpensive used watch for owners of Garmin-equipped boats.

What the quatix 5 was

The quatix 5 adapted Garmin’s fēnix 5 platform for boating, sailing and fishing while retaining functions for swimming, fitness and land-based activities. Garmin launched two versions:

  • quatix 5: $599.99 suggested retail price at the 2017 launch, with a silicone QuickFit band.
  • quatix 5 Sapphire: $849.99 suggested retail price at launch, with sapphire crystal, stainless-steel band and Wi-Fi.

Those were 2017 prices, not current prices. Garmin’s regional product information now identifies the series as discontinued: Garmin discontinued product page.

The marine features that mattered

Boat data on your wrist

With compatible Garmin marine electronics, the watch could display data such as vessel speed, depth, water temperature and wind. Garmin’s support documentation says this information is streamed from compatible chartplotters and requires the relevant Boat Data app from Connect IQ: Garmin Marine Support.

Autopilot control

When paired with the documented Garmin autopilot setup, including a compatible GHC 20 helm control, the quatix 5 could provide wrist-based autopilot commands. Pairing from the watch is:

  1. From the watch face, press START.
  2. Select Autopilot, then press START again.
  3. Move within 3 metres (10 feet) of the marine device.
  4. Put the compatible Garmin helm control into search mode and complete pairing.

To add another autopilot, open the app, hold MENU, then choose Settings > Pair New. Once paired, the watch reconnects when the equipment is powered, within range and the app is open. The full procedure is in Garmin’s quatix 5 pairing instructions.

Garmin’s manual stresses that autopilot is an aid, not a substitute for a watchstander. Operators must be ready to take manual control, should learn the system in calm, hazard-free water and should use extra caution near docks, pilings and other vessels: owner’s manual (PDF).

Waypoint marking and Fusion audio

A connected quatix 5 could mark a waypoint on a Garmin multifunction display from the wrist. It also supported Fusion-Link Lite control for compatible Fusion marine audio systems. Neither function works as a universal controller for third-party equipment.

Sailing, anchoring and fishing tools

On its own, the watch offered marine activity profiles and practical tools including a sailing-race countdown, distance to the start line, time-to-burn calculations, tack assist, an anchor alarm, an anchor-rode calculator, a fishing competition timer and a fish-catch log. These features made it more useful aboard a small boat than a standard fitness watch, even without a full Garmin network.

Tide information

Garmin’s launch description said tide information was downloaded for the user’s area through a smartphone and retained for seven days. It should therefore not be treated as a permanently current, autonomous global tide service: Garmin’s launch announcement.

What works without a Garmin-equipped boat?

Function Standalone watch Compatible marine equipment required
GPS activity tracking Yes No
Sailing-race timer and tack-assist tools Generally yes No
Anchor alarm Yes, as a watch function No chartplotter required
Tide information Requires the phone/data download workflow Smartphone connection relevant
Boat speed, depth, temperature and wind No Compatible Garmin marine network
Remote waypoint marking No Compatible Garmin multifunction display
Autopilot control No Compatible Garmin autopilot and GHC 20 setup
Fusion audio control No Supported Fusion equipment

Bluetooth alone does not make the watch compatible with any chartplotter or autopilot. Check the exact model numbers and required apps before buying.

Specifications and durability

Garmin rates it at 10 ATM, described as pressure equivalent to a depth of 100 metres. Battery claims are “up to” figures: the 2017 announcement said up to two weeks in smartwatch mode, 24 hours in GPS mode and 60 hours in UltraTrac; the current manual specification says up to 14 days in smartwatch mode. Actual life changes with GPS use, heart-rate monitoring, notifications and sensor settings.

Swimming, salt water and safety limits

Ten ATM does not make the quatix 5 a dive computer. Garmin’s swimming documentation describes it for surface swimming, warns that scuba diving may damage it and says wrist heart-rate data is not recorded while swimming: Garmin swimming guidance. Rinse salt and sand from the watch using Garmin’s care guidance after marine use.

The quatix 5 is not a chartplotter, sonar, depth sounder, wind instrument, satellite communicator, certified emergency beacon or replacement for navigation rules, lookout duties and prudent seamanship. Its anchor alarm and GPS functions should supplement, not replace, proper watchkeeping.

Is a used quatix 5 worth buying in 2026?

It can be, but only when the price and equipment fit are right. Use this checklist before paying:

Buyers who already own compatible Garmin marine electronics and want a rugged, button-operated GPS watch may find a deeply discounted unit useful. Avoid it if you need modern sensors, dependable long-term software support, satellite messaging, full charts on the wrist or diving functions. Owners of Raymarine, Simrad, Lowrance or another non-Garmin ecosystem should assume the headline integration will not transfer.

Quatix 5 versus newer Garmin watches

Quatix 7 family

The quatix 7 generation is newer and added expanded health, smartwatch and marine capabilities. Garmin announced launch suggested retail prices from $699.99 to $1,199.99 depending on edition; those figures are launch references, not guaranteed August 2026 street prices: Garmin quatix 7 announcement.

Quatix 8 Pro

Garmin announced the quatix 8 Pro on January 13, 2026, with availability beginning January 16 at a $1,299.99 suggested retail price. It has a 47 mm case, 1.4-inch AMOLED display, titanium bezel, sapphire lens, up to 15 days of smartwatch battery life and inReach satellite/cellular messaging, voice calling and SOS subject to subscription, coverage and regional restrictions. It also adds newer marine controls such as chartplotter voice commands and selected entertainment, lighting and trolling-motor controls: Garmin quatix 8 Pro announcement.

The 8 Pro is the logical current flagship, but its price and connectivity subscription are excessive for someone who only wants basic sailing tools or an inexpensive used watch.

Bottom line for boaters

The quatix 5 really was a marine smartwatch, but its best capabilities were ecosystem features. On a Garmin-equipped boat it could be a convenient remote display and control surface; away from that ecosystem it was mainly an older rugged GPS fitness watch with marine apps. In 2026, consider it only at a substantial used-market discount, and choose a newer quatix model when current hardware, support or satellite safety connectivity matters.
