Samsung announced on August 6, 2024, that it had begun mass production of 12GB and 16GB LPDDR5X DRAM packages designed for mobile devices and on-device AI workloads. The announcement concerns compact system memory—not a new AI processor—and does not establish that a particular phone adopted the parts. As of August 2026, it is a 2024 development, distinct from Samsung’s later data-center AI memory and storage announcements.
What Samsung put into production
The product is LPDDR5X, a low-power form of DRAM used as working memory in mobile devices. Samsung announced 12GB and 16GB package configurations made with 12nm-class DRAM. Each package stacks four layers, with each layer containing two LPDDR DRAMs, and measures 0.65mm thick, according to the company’s August 6, 2024 announcement.
That makes the chips a component that can support local computing, not an AI accelerator in its own right. A phone still needs a compatible processor and software to run an AI model.
What the design changes—and what Samsung’s figures mean
Samsung described the packages as the industry’s thinnest LPDDR DRAM packages at 12GB or higher when announced. The company said the new design is approximately 9% thinner and has approximately 21.2% improved heat resistance compared with its previous-generation product. These are Samsung-reported comparisons, not independent measurements of a complete device.

Samsung attributed the package design to optimized printed-circuit-board and epoxy-molding-compound techniques, as well as back-lapping to reduce height. A thinner memory package can give device designers more room for batteries, cameras, cooling components, or other electronics. Better heat resistance may also help with thermal design, but package thickness alone cannot guarantee a cooler phone or prevent performance throttling. Board layout, heat spreaders, chassis materials, processor efficiency, software power management, and workload duration all affect system temperatures.
Why memory matters for on-device AI
On-device AI runs at least part of a model locally rather than sending every request to a cloud server. Such workloads can increase demand for memory capacity, bandwidth, power efficiency, and thermal management. LPDDR is designed for compact devices where low power use and small packaging matter.

More memory can help a device keep models, intermediate data, and active applications available, but capacity alone does not determine inference speed or capability. The result depends on the processor and neural-processing hardware, memory bandwidth, model size and quantization, cooling, software support, and whether the task runs locally or uses a cloud service. Samsung’s announcement did not provide benchmarks showing an AI performance gain in a shipping phone.
What mass production does—and does not—tell you
Mass production means Samsung said it had moved these packages into volume manufacturing. It is a supply-chain milestone, not proof that every device maker adopted the parts or that consumers could immediately buy a device containing them.

Samsung said it intended to supply the packages to mobile processor and device manufacturers. Its release did not name customers, disclose production volumes or prices, identify a first handset, or confirm shipment dates to a specific device maker. Consumers do not generally buy these packages as loose retail memory.
What Samsung said it planned next
In the 2024 announcement, Samsung said it planned to develop six-layer 24GB and eight-layer 32GB packages for future devices. Those were plans at the time, not configurations confirmed as mass-produced in that announcement. The release does not establish whether those exact planned modules later entered mass production.
