McAfee’s Project Mockingbird was not a universal blocker for AI-generated phone calls. Announced at CES on January 8, 2024, it was the company’s name for technology that detects AI-generated or manipulated audio inside online videos. McAfee later renamed it McAfee Deepfake Detector and incorporated the capability into its broader Scam Detector service. It can warn about suspicious video audio, but it is not a caller-authentication system and cannot guarantee that a voice-clone scam will be stopped.
What Project Mockingbird was
McAfee introduced Project Mockingbird as an AI-powered deepfake-audio detection technology, rather than as a consumer app or voice-cloning tool. The company positioned it against fake celebrity endorsements, manipulated news clips, political disinformation, investment scams, impersonation scams and “cheapfakes”—authentic video paired with altered audio. The CES announcement described the technology as still in development and said McAfee’s testing showed accuracy of more than 90%, a company claim from that announcement rather than a universal, independently verified rate for every language, platform or audio condition.

Why a familiar voice can be a scam
A criminal may obtain a short recording from a public video, social-media post, voicemail or another source, then use an AI service to generate speech that resembles the target. The caller or message creates urgency—such as an alleged kidnapping, accident, arrest, overdue bill or emergency business payment—and pressures the victim to act before checking the story.

McAfee has said in its own research that only a few seconds of recorded speech can be enough for a convincing clone. That is McAfee’s research finding, not a fixed technical threshold for every cloning system. In a separate McAfee survey, nearly one-third of respondents who said they had encountered or fallen victim to a deepfake scam reported an AI voice scam involving an apparent friend or loved one. Those results are survey data, not official crime statistics; methodology, geography and field dates matter when interpreting them. See McAfee’s artificial-impostor report and survey announcement.
How the detector works
McAfee publicly describes Deepfake Detector as analyzing audio in video with transformer-based deep-neural-network models. Its documentation refers to contextual, behavioral and categorical detection models. When the system judges that audio is likely AI-generated or manipulated, it can display an alert while a user watches online video and identify portions that may be affected.
On supported Intel Core Ultra AI PCs, some processing can use the processor’s neural processing unit (NPU). McAfee reported up to a 300% performance improvement on the same model when using that hardware. That is a vendor-reported comparison, not a guarantee for every computer or workload.

McAfee says it does not store users’ audio or browsing history and acknowledges that the detector is not 100% accurate. Its current product description is at McAfee Deepfake Detector. The public documentation does not establish a complete list of supported video sites, a universal confidence threshold, guaranteed false-positive or false-negative rates, or that every analysis is fully local.

What it can detect
- AI-generated speech inserted into an online video.
- Manipulated audio in fake celebrity, investment or political videos.
- Altered sound paired with otherwise authentic footage.
- Risk signals in broader scam content when Scam Detector evaluates supported text, email, links or video.
Synthetic audio is not automatically malicious. Dubbing, translation, narration, voice acting, parody and accessibility tools can all be legitimate uses. An alert means the audio deserves scrutiny; it is not proof that the creator committed fraud.

What it does not do
- It is not documented as a live cellular-call screening system.
- It does not authenticate that a caller is a particular person.
- It does not automatically stop a victim from sending money or credentials.
- It is not a guarantee against every cloned-voice scam.
- It does not prove that an unflagged video is genuine.
- The documented feature focuses on audio inside video, not a promise to analyze every audio-only file or phone call.
Therefore, the direct answer to “does Project Mockingbird stop a voice-clone phone scam?” is no—not directly, based on McAfee’s documented capability. It is primarily a video-analysis warning tool.
What to do when a call sounds like a loved one
- Do not send money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, passwords or account codes during the initial call.
- Hang up and call the person back using a number you already trust—not the number supplied by the caller.
- Use a family passphrase or ask for a verification action that an impersonator would not know.
- If the story involves school, work, a hospital, police or a hotel, contact that organization independently.
- Call another relative or colleague and compare the story through a separate channel.
- If you transferred money, contact your bank, card issuer, transfer service or cryptocurrency exchange immediately and report the fraud.
Caller ID, a familiar voice and a convincing voicemail are weak evidence on their own. Independent verification is the control that addresses the live-phone scenario Deepfake Detector is not designed to authenticate.

Availability and buying considerations
Compatible hardware and software
McAfee currently markets Deepfake Detector for PCs using Intel Core Ultra 200V-series processors, but exact model, operating-system, browser, regional and subscription requirements should be checked before purchase. The initial Lenovo launch covered selected AI PCs, not every Lenovo computer.

Languages and regions
The August 2024 launch supported English-language detection in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. McAfee has discussed expansion, but do not assume universal multilingual or worldwide support without checking the current regional requirements.
Pricing and subscriptions
Lenovo launch materials cited U.S. pricing starting at $9.99 for the first year and a 30-day trial for qualifying Lenovo AI-PC customers; that launch offer should not be treated as a 2026 list price. McAfee’s current Scam Detector page shows a page-specific U.S. signal of $39.99 for the first term after a possible trial, followed by an indicated $109.99 annual renewal, with the exact term and prices subject to change. Is an AI PC worth buying for this feature?
It may be sensible if you are already buying a compatible laptop and want automatic browser warnings plus broader security tools. Buying an expensive computer solely for deepfake detection is harder to justify when your main concern is live phone impersonation; a callback plan, family passphrase and bank controls address that risk more directly and cost nothing.

Accuracy, privacy and practical limits
The “more than 90%” figure belongs to McAfee’s January 2024 announcement and should not be read as a current, universal benchmark. Detection can produce false positives—such as legitimate synthetic narration, dubbing, compression or parody—and false negatives when generation methods, languages, voices or audio quality differ from what the model handles well.
McAfee’s privacy statement says audio and browsing history are not stored, and compatible AI PCs may use local NPU processing. Those statements should be kept separate from the broader data practices of a security suite, browser extension or other Scam Detector functions; they do not establish that every feature is always processed locally.
Use an alert alongside the video’s source reputation, provenance, independent reporting, unusual payment requests and emotional pressure. Treat an unflagged clip cautiously too: absence of an alert is not authentication.
Bottom line
Project Mockingbird was McAfee’s 2024 name for deepfake-audio detection work. It became Deepfake Detector and later part of Scam Detector, offering useful warnings about suspicious audio in supported online videos. It does not listen to ordinary phone calls, certify a caller’s identity or guarantee that a voice-clone scam will be prevented. For an urgent call, hang up, verify through a known channel and refuse to transfer money until the story is independently confirmed.
