How to Turn On Your Wii: Console, Remote and No-Power Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the Wii AC adapter, turn on the television, select the input used by the Wii, and press the console’s Power button. The Sensor Bar is not needed to start the console; it is needed for normal Wii Remote pointing. A synchronized Wii Remote can also start the console, but only when it is synchronized in Standard Mode.

What you need

  • The Wii console and the correct Wii AC adapter
  • A television and Wii-compatible video cable or converter
  • A Wii Remote with working batteries, if you want to use one
  • The Sensor Bar, if you need the remote’s pointer

For the North American setup, Nintendo’s manual specifies a 120-volt AC wall outlet. Connect the adapter’s DC plug to the Wii’s rear DC input and its AC plug to the wall. Do not substitute an adapter unless its model and electrical specifications are confirmed.

Setup details are in Nintendo’s Wii setup manual.

Turn on the Wii from the console

  1. Place the Wii on a stable surface with its ventilation openings clear.
  2. Connect the AC adapter to the rear of the console and to the wall outlet.
  3. Connect the Wii video cable to the television, or to a powered converter that feeds the television.
  4. If you will use the pointer, plug the Sensor Bar into the Wii’s Sensor Bar connector and place it above or below the television.
  5. Turn on the television and select the AV, component, HDMI-converter, or other input used by the Wii.
  6. Press the Power button on the Wii.

On an operating system with the correct input selected, the Wii startup screen or Wii Menu should appear. The console can be running even when the television is showing a blank screen or the wrong source.

Where is the Power button?

Model Button location
Original Wii (RVL-001) Power button on the front face of the console.
Wii Family Edition (RVL-101) Power button on the front face of the horizontal console.
Wii mini (RVL-201) Power button on the console’s top panel.

Turn on the Wii with a Wii Remote

  1. Install fresh batteries in the remote.
  2. Press the remote’s Power button.
  3. Wait for the Wii to start and select the Wii input on the television if necessary.

The remote must already be synchronized with that console, and Nintendo specifies Standard Mode synchronization for remote power-on and power-off. A remote that was temporarily connected for a game may not be able to start the console. If remote power-on fails, use the console’s physical Power button first and synchronize the remote again.

Press A when the Wii displays “Press A to continue.”

Synchronize a Wii Remote in Standard Mode

Regular Wii models

  1. Press the console’s physical Power button.
  2. Open the front SD Card Slot cover.
  3. Remove the Wii Remote battery cover.
  4. Press and release the red SYNC button below the batteries.
  5. While the remote LEDs blink, press and release the red SYNC button inside the Wii’s SD Card Slot.
  6. When one Player LED remains lit, synchronization is complete.

Wii mini

Follow the same remote procedure, but use the Wii mini’s console SYNC button on the left side near the battery compartment. Nintendo’s instructions are at How to sync a Wii Remote with a Wii console.

What the remote lights mean

Press A to wake or test the remote. If its LEDs blink and then go out, it is not currently synchronized with the console. If it has no lights, start with fresh batteries and inspect the battery contacts.

Complete first-time or post-storage setup

At the initial setup screens, press A and choose the following:

  1. Language
  2. Sensor Bar position: Above TV or Below TV
  3. Date and time
  4. Widescreen setting
  5. Console nickname
  6. Country of residence
  7. Optional parental controls

Confirm the screen-burn-in reduction notice. If the Wii was stored for a long time, a fresh battery set and correctly connected cables are often all that is needed before these screens appear.

Nintendo Wii Console, White (Renewed)
  • Bundle Includes: Wii Console, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Wii Remote Jacket, Sensor Bar, Wii AC Adaptor, Wii AV Cable

See Nintendo’s first-time Wii setup instructions.

If the Wii has no picture

  1. Confirm that the television itself is on.
  2. Use the TV remote to select the input where the Wii cable is connected.
  3. Reseat both ends of the AV or video cable.
  4. If an HDMI converter is used, confirm that it has power and that the TV is set to its HDMI input.
  5. Try another compatible input or television if one is available.

A Wii may power on normally while the TV displays the wrong source, so a blank picture does not by itself prove that the console failed.

If the remote turns on but the cursor is missing

The Sensor Bar is an infrared reference for pointing. It does not power the console or carry the remote’s game data.

Wii Console Bundle (White) with Wii Play Game (2 Players) -Smart TV Ready (Renewed)
  • Includes: Wii console (white), console stand, 2 genuine Wii remotes with silicone sleeve and safety strap, 2 nunchuks, AV cables, AC adapter, sensor bar, HDMI adatper for modern TVs. Choose your option for 1 or 2 sets of controllers.
  • Wii Play Game: 9 Classic Mini-Games Enjoy fan favorites like Tanks!, Table Tennis, and Fishing.
  • Fully cleaned, inspected and tested for proper operation. Ships with all necessary cables and accessories — just plug in and play.
  • Note on Online Features – Support has been discontinued for online play, WiiConnect24, and other internet-based services. All included games function fully offline and do not require internet connectivity.
  • Plug the bar into the Wii’s rear Sensor Bar connector; positioning it near the TV is not enough.
  • Center it directly above the screen, or on the front edge of the surface directly below the screen. Do not hide it on a lower shelf.
  • In Wii System Settings, set the Sensor Bar position to match its physical location.
  • Use the remote approximately 3–10 feet from the television and generally in front of it.
  • Reduce bright sunlight and nearby infrared or reflective sources, including fireplaces, candles, stoves, and infrared heaters.
  • Remove stickers or smudges and check that a misaligned Wii Remote jacket is not covering the pointer lens.

A phone or digital camera may show the Sensor Bar’s infrared lights, but some cameras filter infrared and will not provide a useful test. Nintendo describes the camera check at its Sensor Bar support page.

For additional cursor troubleshooting, see Nintendo’s Wii Remote and cursor guidance.

If there is no power light

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Disconnect accessories attached directly to the console.
  2. Verify that the AC adapter is firmly connected at the console and wall.
  3. Try a different wall outlet.
  4. Unplug the adapter from the wall for at least two minutes, then reconnect it.
  5. Remove damaged or unlicensed accessories and try again.

If the Wii still has no light, the adapter or console may have failed. Nintendo says service requests are no longer accepted for Wii models RVL-001, RVL-101, and RVL-201; replacement may therefore be more practical than an official repair. Consult Nintendo’s no-power troubleshooting page.

Understand the power indicators

What you see What it suggests Next check
No light No usable power is reaching the console, or the adapter or console has failed. Outlet, connections, two-minute reset, and accessory removal.
Red or standby light The console is in standby rather than actively running. Press the console Power button once and check the TV input.
Active power light but no image The Wii may be running while the TV is on the wrong input or the video path is faulty. Check the cable, converter, and another display path.

Indicator behavior can vary by model and standby configuration; do not diagnose a failed console from a light color alone.

Reset a troublesome Wii Remote

  1. Remove the remote’s batteries.
  2. Wait one minute.
  3. Reinstall the batteries.
  4. Turn on the Wii with the console button.
  5. Repeat the Standard Mode synchronization steps.

As an advanced recovery measure, Nintendo’s manual describes clearing old synchronization data by holding the console’s SYNC button for about 15 seconds from the Health and Safety screen. Use that only when ordinary synchronization and the battery reset have failed, because it removes existing remote pairings.

Wii mini and Wii U distinctions

The Wii mini (RVL-201) places its SYNC control differently and does not include Wi-Fi capability, so not every menu or connectivity feature matches other Wii models. This guide concerns original Wii-family consoles, not the Wii U. Although Wii U systems support many Wii accessories, a Wii U GamePad can serve as a sensor reference in situations where an original Wii still requires its Sensor Bar, and Wii and Wii U AC adapters should not be assumed interchangeable.

Turn the Wii off safely

Press the console’s or synchronized remote’s Power button once for a normal shutdown. Holding the button is a troubleshooting action, not the preferred everyday method. Keep the Wii ventilated, secure the Wii Remote wrist strap during motion games, and never pull cables by their cords or open the console for electrical repairs unless qualified.

When replacement is justified

Replace parts only after isolating the fault. A correct AC adapter is the first priority for a Wii with no light; a Sensor Bar is relevant when the console and remote work but pointing does not; and a licensed remote is relevant when another remote synchronizes successfully. Nintendo identifies licensed Wii Remote model RVL-003 and Wii Remote Plus model RVL-036. Current official prices and stock were not established, so check Nintendo’s Store directly. For used hardware, Nintendo notes that secondhand products do not carry Nintendo hardware or accessory warranty and provides older-product guidance at its support page.
