DreamWorld’s AI text-to-3D Steam playtest was real: the developer announced a free test scheduled for October 10, 2024, featuring DreamForge, an in-game tool for generating custom building pieces from text prompts. The story is no longer simply “coming to Steam,” however. DreamWorld entered paid Steam Early Access on March 10, 2026, and the feature is best understood as an experimental construction tool inside the game—not a general-purpose 3D asset-production service.
What DreamWorld announced in 2024
On October 3, 2024, GamesBeat reported that DreamWorld’s first Steam playtest was due to begin on October 10. The free playtest was to be accessed by requesting access through the game’s Steam page. DreamWorld presented AI text-to-3D generation as one of the test’s major features, developed with Meshy. GamesBeat’s report and DreamWorld’s Steam announcements document the original timing and feature description.
DreamWorld is an open-world sandbox MMO built around a shared, procedurally infinite world, voxel terrain players can deform, construction, resource gathering, crafting, survival, farming, cooking, exploration and combat. In that setting, DreamForge was meant to extend the building system: players could make a piece for their construction rather than choose only from a fixed set of developer-made parts. The Steam store page describes the broader game and its intended systems; claims about scale or performance there are developer descriptions, not independent measurements.
How DreamForge’s text-to-3D workflow works
- Place a DreamForge building piece in the game.
- Enter a text description of the object you want.
- Let the system generate a 3D model.
- Use the result as a custom piece in a DreamWorld construction.
DreamWorld described this as “in-game, live-time generation” of custom building pieces. That phrase describes the feature’s intended place in the game, not a guarantee that every prompt returns instantly or produces a polished result. The key distinction is that the output was intended for use in DreamWorld’s construction system. The announcement did not establish unrestricted model export, professional topology controls, rigging, animation, or a complete external asset-authoring workflow.

The central 2024 limitation: other players could not see your generated pieces
For an MMO building feature, generating an object locally is only part of the job: the game must also save it and make it appear consistently to other players. DreamWorld said replication of AI-generated assets was still in development during the 2024 playtest, so each player could see only their own generated assets. The developer hoped to support replication in a later update, but that was a future intention, not a capability promised for the test.
This mattered because DreamForge’s social value depended on shared visibility. An object that its creator can place but visitors cannot see is useful for personal experimentation, but it does not yet function as shared-world construction. The question is not just whether a model can be generated; it is whether it persists and synchronizes reliably.
What changed by the 2026 Early Access release
DreamWorld is no longer accurately described only as a forthcoming playtest. Its official Steam community material says the game entered Early Access on March 10, 2026. The Steam listing identifies it as a paid Early Access game; it showed a US price of $29.99 when the page was crawled. Price and access can change, so check the live Steam listing before deciding whether to buy.

Later update notes show both development and continuing implementation challenges. A January 2026 update reported that DreamForge had been upgraded to Meshy 6; this is an update-note claim, not an independently verified quality or speed benchmark. March 2026 notes mention fixes for generated assets that sometimes failed to appear for other players or reverted to a sphere after relogging. Those reports indicate that synchronization and persistence remained practical engineering concerns after the original playtest, rather than proving that every such issue persisted for every player. The updates are reflected in SteamDB’s record of DreamWorld’s January update notes and the official Steam community page.
What “AI text-to-3D” does—and does not—promise
In this case, the phrase means that a text prompt can be used to generate a 3D object intended as a building piece within DreamWorld. It should not be read as a promise that any prompt will produce a useful result, or that the result can be taken into another project as a finished asset.
- Not a professional modeling pipeline: The announcement does not establish player control over topology, UVs, material separation, pivots, collision, scale, rigging or animation.
- Not a guarantee of quality or consistency: Vague prompts can yield unpredictable results; quick generation does not ensure clean geometry, attractive materials or a useful silhouette.
- Not a promise of universal behavior: A generated object is not thereby a functioning machine, animated character, game mechanic or complete asset package.
- Not proof the whole game is AI-made: DreamWorld said its own game art continued to be produced through a traditional art pipeline. The AI feature was an additional building tool, not a claim that the game’s entire art direction came from generated assets.
- Not established as an export or ownership grant: The available DreamWorld material does not establish that players can freely export generated pieces or commercially reuse them. Do not assume Meshy’s standalone licensing terms apply to DreamForge output.
DreamWorld’s announcement also discussed longer-term ambitions such as importing Blender models and supporting movement, animation and functionality. Those were plans, not capabilities established for the 2024 playtest. The game’s later feature set may differ from the original test, so the old announcement should not be treated as a complete specification of the Early Access version.

Access, price and PC requirements
The 2024 free playtest, later demo or test builds, and the paid Early Access product are distinct Steam states. The developer’s FAQ discusses playtest access separately from Early Access, and the current Steam page should be checked for what can be joined or purchased now. The listing showed $29.99 in the United States when crawled; this is a time-sensitive store price, not a promise of a permanent price or of equivalent pricing in other regions.

What to watch for when judging the feature
DreamForge’s appeal is the short path from an idea to a usable construction piece without leaving the game to model and import it manually. Its practical value depends on more than whether a prompt can produce a striking object once. For a multiplayer sandbox, useful questions include whether the object looks suitable in the world, behaves as a building piece, survives a relog, and appears correctly to other players. Moderation and the handling of unsuitable or infringing prompts are also relevant for user-generated content; the cited announcements do not establish a comprehensive policy or guarantee particular moderation outcomes.

For a player who wants to experiment with custom construction in DreamWorld, the integrated workflow is the point. Someone who needs predictable, editable geometry, export controls, animation or a production asset pipeline should not treat DreamForge as a substitute for a 3D tool such as Blender. Likewise, a separate Meshy subscription is not established as necessary to play DreamWorld or use its in-game feature.
Bottom line: a real experiment, now part of an Early Access game
The 2024 announcement was genuine, but its “coming to Steam” framing is historical. DreamForge was presented as a Meshy-developed, prompt-based way to create building pieces inside DreamWorld; the original playtest exposed a major multiplayer gap because other players could not initially see each creator’s generated assets. DreamWorld later entered paid Early Access, with updates reporting a Meshy 6 integration and fixes related to asset visibility and persistence. Treat the feature as an ambitious in-game creative tool whose usefulness depends on generation quality, synchronization and persistence—not as unrestricted text-to-3D asset production.
