Xbox Game Pass Standard and the Rising Price of Play: What Changed and What It Means in 2026

Microsoft’s 2024 Game Pass decision was both a price increase and a redesign of access. The new Standard tier kept console multiplayer and a large catalog at a lower entry price, but removed day-one releases. Players who wanted major Xbox launches immediately had to pay for a higher tier. That split—catalog access versus launch access—still defines Game Pass, although Xbox’s current U.S. pages now show Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass rather than prominently listing Standard.

The July 2024 decision was more than a simple price rise

Rachel Kaser’s GamesBeat “Kaser Focus” column was published on July 13, 2024 and updated June 18, 2025. It examined Microsoft’s simultaneous price changes, the introduction of Game Pass Standard and the timing of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The original report said PC Game Pass increased by $2 per month and Ultimate by $3, with those changes scheduled for September 12, 2024. Those figures describe the 2024 change, not current prices. Read the GamesBeat analysis.

Microsoft also stopped accepting new subscriptions to Game Pass for Console while allowing existing subscribers to remain on their grandfathered arrangement. Standard became the new console-focused option for new customers.

What Game Pass Standard included—and what it withheld

At its U.S. launch on September 10, 2024, Standard cost $14.99 per month. Microsoft described it as access to hundreds of console games, online console multiplayer and member discounts. It included established Xbox franchises and selected third-party titles, but not immediate access to new releases. Microsoft’s launch announcement and preview explanation provide the tier details.

Cloud gaming Not part of Standard’s original positioning Included with Ultimate
EA Play Not included Included with Ultimate and specified PC plans
Launch price $14.99 per month in the U.S. Higher and dependent on tier and date

The distinction was about timing, not simply quantity. During the preview, Microsoft warned that games entering Ultimate—including day-one titles—might reach Standard later, potentially 12 months or more after launch, with timing varying by game. Standard therefore was not “Ultimate for less”; it was a catalog-and-multiplayer plan that made subscribers wait for some new releases.

Why Call of Duty made the economics obvious

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was scheduled for day-one Game Pass release in October 2024. The timing created a clear consumer calculation: subscribe for one or two months, play the blockbuster, then cancel, potentially spending less than buying it outright. That is an economic incentive created by the launch—not proof that Microsoft publicly raised prices solely because of Call of Duty.

Microsoft confirmed the game’s day-one availability and later announced cloud support for Ultimate subscribers. See the cloud announcement. For Microsoft, a major launch can attract a surge of subscriptions, but short-term subscribers may leave immediately afterward. Tiering lets the company charge more for instant access while retaining a cheaper catalog option for people who are willing to wait.

Price increase, value segmentation—or both?

The strongest reading is that the 2024 change did both:

  • It raised prices: PC Game Pass and Ultimate became more expensive according to the 2024 GamesBeat report.
  • It preserved an entry point: Standard offered multiplayer and a substantial existing catalog without the full premium price.
  • It monetized urgency: “I want games” and “I want new games immediately” became different products.
  • It made the premium tier more consequential: day-one releases, cloud play and bundled services became reasons to upgrade.

Counting games alone misses the commercial change. The key question became how soon a subscriber needs access.

The wider rising-price-of-play argument

Kaser’s column connected Game Pass to a broader pattern of recurring monetization: subscription increases, reworked battle passes and more frequent payments for ongoing content. It cited Apex Legends changes from EA and Respawn that required real-money purchases and replaced one 110-rank seasonal pass with two 60-rank passes over six weeks. The GamesBeat column provides that comparison.

Game Pass and Apex Legends are not the same business model. The narrower parallel is that publishers were trying to make recurring revenue more regular while players became more alert to cumulative spending. A monthly subscription, a battle pass and a full-price launch purchase can each be reasonable alone; together, they compete for the same household budget.

What happened to Standard after 2024?

The historical column should not be mistaken for a current plan guide. In the U.S. pages observed August 16, 2026, Xbox prominently lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Standard is not prominently listed on those purchase pages. That indicates a later restructuring, but the available pages do not establish whether Standard was formally renamed, retired or replaced. Premium may occupy a similar lower-priced, delayed-access role, but it should not be called a confirmed one-for-one rename without a Microsoft naming-history statement.

Which option fits which player?

Choose a lower-priced console tier when the catalog is enough

  • You mainly play established or older games.
  • Console multiplayer matters.
  • You can wait for selected new releases.
  • You play often enough to justify a recurring catalog fee.

Choose Ultimate for day-one console and cloud access

  • Immediate access to eligible major releases is the main reason you subscribe.
  • You use both console and PC.
  • You will use cloud gaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, perks or other included benefits.
  • You expect to play several substantial releases during the subscription period.

Choose PC Game Pass for a Windows-first library

PC Game Pass is the focused choice when day-one PC releases and EA Play matter, while console multiplayer and console access do not. PC games can involve separate launchers, accounts and system requirements.

Buy games individually when ownership matters more

  • You play only one or two games a year.
  • You expect to keep playing a title for many months.
  • You want permanent access, modding freedom or no catalog rotation.
  • You dislike recurring billing.

A practical test is to compare one month of the relevant plan with the current standalone price of the specific game. A short subscription can be rational for a launch-heavy month; continuous subscription is harder to justify for irregular players.

Important limitations before subscribing

  • Game Pass access is a license, not ownership; titles can leave the catalog.
  • “Day one” applies to eligible releases and plans, not every game announced for Xbox.
  • Activision Blizzard availability varies by title, plan, platform and region; do not assume every Activision, Blizzard or King game is included.
  • Cloud play depends on supported devices, regions, network conditions and service availability.
  • Grandfathered subscriptions may retain terms unavailable to new customers.
  • Free-to-play games generally do not require a paid console multiplayer subscription, subject to Microsoft’s current rules.
  • Promotional prices, including introductory offers, may renew at the regular rate unless canceled.

The bottom line on the rising price of play

Game Pass did not simply become more expensive. Microsoft divided access into layers: a cheaper route to multiplayer and a back catalog, and a more expensive route to the newest games immediately. That structure made the value question personal. Heavy users of launches, cloud play and bundled services can justify the premium; occasional players may save more by subscribing briefly or buying a game outright. The 2024 Standard controversy matters because it turned waiting time itself into a feature that Microsoft could price.
