It remains interesting as a very cheap, carefully checked used phone, but its aging battery, uncertain update status, slow platform, microUSB port and carrier-band limitations make it a risky primary phone in 2026.
What the Camon 15 Premier is
The Premier was positioned as the higher-end model in Tecno’s 2020 Camon 15 family, alongside the Camon 15, Camon 15 Air and Camon 15 Pro. Device records commonly identify it by model code CD8j (see device-identification records). Its design emphasizes photography, a notch-free screen and a pop-up selfie mechanism rather than flagship processing power.
Sources place the launch in April 2020. PhonesData, Mobolist and TechArena list April 13, while references to the wider family use April 2; the difference likely reflects family announcement versus individual-market availability. The April 13 date is therefore best described as a specification-database date, not a universal worldwide release date (PhonesData, Mobolist, TechArena, Camon 15 family reference).
Tecno’s official site now highlights newer Camon generations rather than a current Camon 15 Premier sales page, so availability in 2026 should be treated as used, refurbished, imported or old stock rather than ongoing official retail (Tecno).

Design, durability and the pop-up camera
The motorized selfie camera lets the display run without a notch or punch-hole. That gives videos, reading and games an uninterrupted rectangle, but adds a moving part that can wear out, collect dust or jam after a drop. At about 9.1mm thick and 203g, the phone is substantial rather than slim by 2026 standards.
The glass front and generally reported plastic frame and rear are practical budget-phone materials. A rear fingerprint reader is easy to locate, although newer phones more often use a side or in-display sensor. No reliable IP water-resistance rating is reported, so treat it as unprotected from liquid.
Display: sharp for its era, ordinary now
The 6.6-inch 1080 × 2340 IPS LCD is one of the Premier’s better specifications. Approximately 390 pixels per inch makes text and Full HD video noticeably sharper than the low-resolution panels common on some budget phones of the period. The notch-free layout also improves the usable viewing area.

- Limitations: LCD contrast rather than OLED black levels, a conventional 60Hz refresh rate, and no verified HDR, adaptive refresh or exceptional brightness claim.
- Used-unit checks: inspect solid-color screens for dead pixels and uneven backlighting, then drag a finger around every edge to find touch problems.
Performance and gaming
The Helio P35 is a 12nm-class, 4G entry-level platform built around eight Cortex-A53 cores and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It is suitable for calls, messaging, email, web browsing, navigation, streaming and light social applications. Casual and older games can work at modest settings.
It is not a sensible choice for modern 3D games, sustained high frame rates, heavy video editing or demanding multitasking. A database records an AnTuTu 8 score of 118,823, but that is a historical reference whose result changes with firmware, temperature, storage condition and test version; it is not a directly comparable 2026 score (PhonesData). The 6GB RAM figure does not turn the older processor or eMMC 5.1 storage into a modern high-performance system.
Camera system: interesting hardware, limited certainty
Rear cameras
The rear array is generally listed as a 64MP main camera, 5MP ultrawide, 2MP depth camera and QVGA auxiliary sensor. The ultrawide adds perspective, while the depth and auxiliary units mainly support computational effects. Megapixels alone do not establish dynamic range, autofocus reliability, night performance, stabilization or processing quality.
Pop-up selfie camera
The 32MP motorized front camera is the phone’s signature feature and enables the unobstructed display. On a used device, mechanism condition matters as much as resolution: test repeated raising and retraction, focus, video, microphone and portrait modes, and listen for grinding or hesitation.

Video and real-world expectations
Listings generally specify up to 1080p at 30fps for both cameras, with no reported 4K recording. A launch-era hands-on video by Fisayo Fosudo covers the build, display, HiOS 6.0.1, gaming, battery and cameras; it is useful historical context, not evidence of current software or battery condition (Fisayo Fosudo review).
Battery, charging and ports
The non-removable battery is rated at 4,000mAh. A new or well-preserved unit would be expected to deliver ordinary day-to-day use, but no precise endurance figure is established by a documented standardized test. In 2026, the age of the cell is more important than its original capacity: expect reduced runtime, rapid percentage drops or unexpected shutdowns in some units.
The microUSB 2.0 connector is slower and less convenient than USB-C and older ports may be loose. USB OTG is commonly listed. The 3.5mm headphone jack remains useful for wired audio. Battery replacement quality, parts and labor vary by country; a power bank is only a short-term workaround, not a cure for a failing cell.
Software and update risk
Launch software was Android 10 with HiOS 6.0. The available evidence does not establish a universal final Android version, final security-patch date or identical update history across regions. Do not assume that a particular listing received Android 11 or later.

Before buying, open the phone’s update screen (usually Settings → System → System update, or the equivalent HiOS menu) and record:
- Android version.
- Android security-update date.
- Google Play Protect certification in Google Play.
- Whether required banking, messaging, streaming and authentication apps install and run.
An old security patch may still allow basic apps while failing the requirements of security-sensitive services. This makes update status a primary buying consideration, not a footnote.
Connectivity and carrier compatibility
The phone supports dual-SIM 2G, 3G and 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS according to common listings. It is not a 5G phone, and NFC is not reported. Broad LTE support does not guarantee compatibility with every carrier because bands and firmware differ by region.
- Insert the intended SIM and place a call.
- Test LTE mobile data and, where required, VoLTE.
- Confirm the phone is SIM-unlocked and the IMEI is clean.
- Check whether local 3G shutdowns affect fallback service.
- For an imported phone, compare the exact model’s LTE bands with the carrier rather than relying on “4G unlocked” wording.
Original pricing and what a 2026 listing means
Historical launch prices were regional, not current offers. TechArena reported KSh 26,999 in Kenya in 2020; Fisayo Fosudo’s launch-era video cited N95,000 (approximately $261); Mobolist shows an approximate $237 worldwide price signal without dependable current retail context (TechArena, Fisayo Fosudo, Mobolist). These figures should not be presented as August 2026 prices.

A marketplace “new” unit may actually be old stock with a degraded battery; other listings may be used, refurbished, imported, misidentified or counterfeit. Compare the seller’s condition, return policy, included charger and exact model rather than anchoring on an old database number.
Used-buying inspection checklist
- Pop-up camera: raise and retract it repeatedly; reject grinding, wobbling, hesitation or failure to close. Test focus, video, microphone and portrait modes.
- Battery: look for swelling or a lifting rear cover, unusual heat while charging, overnight drain and sudden percentage drops.
- Screen and touch: use solid colors to find pixels or uneven lighting, and test every edge for missed taps or ghost touches.
- Network: insert your SIM, test calls, LTE data and VoLTE if needed, then verify IMEI status.
- Ports and sensors: test microUSB charging and data, OTG if important, headphone jack, speakers, microphones, vibration, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Software: check Android and security-patch versions, Play Protect certification and the apps you actually need. Have the seller remove accounts and factory-reset the phone.
- Authenticity: compare model number, IMEI, RAM and storage in Settings with the box and device labels; use a reputable diagnostic app if specifications look suspicious.
Who should consider it in 2026?
Reasonable use cases
- A very inexpensive, verified secondary phone.
- Basic calling, messaging, browsing and media playback.
- A buyer who specifically wants a notch-free display or pop-up selfie camera.
- Someone who values microSD, dual SIM and a headphone jack.
Reasons to walk away
- Obsolete or unverifiable security support for banking or other sensitive work.
- Heavy gaming, editing or demanding multitasking.
- Need for 5G, USB-C, NFC, water resistance or a high-refresh display.
- A price close to a newer entry-level phone.
- Any sign of pop-up wear, battery swelling, charging-port damage or unsupported carrier bands.
How it compares with newer choices
A current budget Android phone generally offers USB-C, a more efficient processor, newer camera processing, fresher batteries and a longer security-update runway. A newer Tecno Camon model should also provide a more modern platform and connectivity. A used phone from a manufacturer with clearly documented update support and carrier compatibility can be safer than buying an older Premier, even when its camera specification looks less impressive. Make the comparison using total condition, software support and network fit—not the 64MP label alone.
Verdict
The Camon 15 Premier was an ambitious 2020 camera phone: its Full HD+ screen, 6GB/128GB configuration, microSD slot, headphone jack and pop-up selfie camera remain appealing. In 2026, however, the Helio P35, 4G-only radio, microUSB connector, uncertain updates, aging battery and moving camera mechanism define the ownership risk. Buy one only when the price is exceptionally low, the exact unit passes the inspection checklist and your carrier and essential apps work. Otherwise, a newer budget phone is the more dependable purchase.
