The report alleged a 48-megapixel IMX903, a 50-megapixel IMX907, roughly 1/1.12-inch and 1/1.14-inch optical formats, 1.4μm pixels and a two-layer transistor-pixel design. Sony has confirmed that its two-layer technology exists, but it has not publicly validated these model numbers or the leaked specification sheet. Apple’s official iPhone 16 Pro documentation also does not identify either sensor.
What the 2023 leak claimed
The specifications came from secondary reporting of an online tip. They should be read as alleged figures, not as a Sony datasheet.

Notebookcheck’s report attributed these details to a leak rather than to Sony. No public Sony datasheet in the cited material confirms the resolutions, formats, pixel dimensions or sub-pixel layouts.
What Sony’s two-layer transistor-pixel technology actually means
In a conventional CMOS pixel, the photodiode and pixel transistors occupy the same substrate layer. Sony’s two-layer design places them on separate stacked substrate layers. That arrangement gives the photodiode more usable area while allowing larger transistor structures.

Sony says the design can approximately double saturation signal capacity against its stated conventional comparison, with the goal of widening dynamic range and reducing low-light noise. The company described the technology in its 2021 announcement and provides a technical explanation at Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ mobile technology page.
That documentation confirms the process, not the rumor. It does not establish that IMX903 or IMX907 used it, nor does it guarantee a particular phone’s image quality. Lens transmission, readout design, autofocus, image-signal processing and computational photography still determine the finished result.
Why the alleged sensor sizes attracted attention
Formats around 1/1.12-inch and 1/1.14-inch would be large for many smartphone cameras, although they would remain below the nominal one-inch class represented by parts such as Sony’s IMX989. Optical-format labels are historical conventions; they are not literal measurements of a sensor’s diagonal.

A larger sensor can collect more light and create stronger background separation when aperture, lens transmission and processing are comparable. It also brings costs:
- larger lenses and a thicker camera module;
- more demanding stabilization and autofocus packaging;
- greater optical and power-design requirements; and
- potentially higher manufacturing complexity.
Resolution alone is not a quality ranking. A 50MP sensor does not automatically outperform a 48MP sensor, and a smaller sensor with better optics and processing can produce a better photograph in some scenes.
The rumored iPhone 16 connection
Separate leak reports linked a customized 48MP IMX903 to an iPhone 16 Pro Max or another iPhone 16 Pro-class model. Coverage also mentioned possible stacked construction, 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion and Digital Gain Control. Those were claims from Asian leak sources repeated by technology publications, not specifications Apple published.

Apple’s official iPhone 16 Pro specifications call the main camera a 48MP Fusion camera. They list a 24mm-equivalent focal length, ƒ/1.78 aperture, sensor-shift optical stabilization and 100% Focus Pixels, but do not name a Sony component. MacRumors’ reporting likewise discussed the IMX903 connection as a rumor.
Therefore, the iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max should not be described as definitively using IMX903. Apple can also receive a customized supplier part whose configuration, calibration and firmware differ from an off-the-shelf sensor.

IMX903 versus IMX907: what the paper comparison can—and cannot—say
On the leaked figures alone, IMX903 was the lower-resolution 48MP design and IMX907 the 50MP design. The reported sub-pixel arrangements also differed. That is not enough to identify a real-world winner.

- The 2MP difference has little meaning by itself in a phone camera.
- The leak provides no verified quantum-efficiency, full-well-capacity, conversion-gain, readout-speed, frame-rate or noise measurements.
- Sub-pixel dimensions such as 0.7 × 1.4μm and 0.7 × 0.7μm cannot be translated directly into dynamic range or detail without the rest of the pixel and color-filter design.
- Pixel binning could mean either sensor normally outputs lower-resolution images despite a 48MP or 50MP native array.
The responsible conclusion is that IMX903 and IMX907 were different rumored designs, not that one was proven superior.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed by public documentation
- Sony developed and described a two-layer transistor-pixel stacked CMOS technology.
- Sony says separating photodiodes and transistors can increase saturation capacity and help dynamic range and noise performance under its stated comparison.
- A 2023 report circulated the alleged 48MP/50MP, optical-format and 1.4μm figures.
- Apple’s public iPhone 16 Pro specifications identify the camera’s capabilities but not a Sony model number.
Still unverified
- That Sony formally launched commercial products named IMX903 and IMX907.
- That either model used the two-layer process.
- That Apple used IMX903 in an iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max.
- The alleged formats, pixel sizes, sub-pixel layouts, 14-bit ADC and Digital Gain Control.
- Any specific frame rate, HDR range, autofocus result or video mode.
What happened after the predicted launch cycle?
The leak was forward-looking in 2023, and the anticipated 2024 phone cycle has passed. As of August 18, 2026, no public official source cited here confirms that either model entered a mass-market smartphone under those names. Sony’s accessible mobile lineup emphasizes LYTIA products such as LYTIA 901, LYTIA 900, LYTIA 910 and LYTIA 828 rather than publicly listing IMX903 or IMX907 as ordinary retail-facing mobile products. The lineup is available at Sony Semiconductor Solutions.
This does not prove that no customized or internally designated part ever existed. Manufacturers can use private variants, and phone software or teardown identifiers may expose only a component code. It does mean there is no public confirmation supporting the original headline as a product announcement.

How to judge similar camera-sensor leaks
- Check the source chain: distinguish a Sony or phone-maker document from an anonymous tip and secondary reporting.
- Look for a complete datasheet: headline megapixels and format numbers are not enough.
- Seek independent confirmation: reliable teardowns, diagnostic logs and multiple unrelated reports are stronger than repetition of one leak.
- Compare post-launch evidence: once a predicted phone ships, check whether a credible teardown identifies the part.
- Separate the component from the camera: lens design, tuning, HDR, denoising, sharpening and RAW handling can change results substantially.
What the rumor does—and does not—tell phone buyers
The report is useful as a snapshot of the sensor technology the industry was discussing in 2023. It is not a reason to buy a phone advertised as an “IMX903 phone” or “IMX907 phone” without component-level evidence. Sony’s confirmed two-layer direction is technically significant, but a technology announcement cannot validate every later model rumor.
Readers seeking a current Sony sensor family can consult the public LYTIA lineup. Readers choosing an iPhone 16 Pro should evaluate Apple’s documented camera features, video tools, stabilization and software integration rather than an unconfirmed supplier model. A phone with a one-inch-class sensor may offer greater light-gathering potential, while a computationally advanced phone with a smaller sensor may perform better in particular shooting conditions.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: IMX903 and IMX907 remain unconfirmed 2023 sensor rumors. Sony’s two-layer transistor-pixel technology is real, but Sony has not publicly tied it to those model numbers, and Apple has not confirmed IMX903 in the iPhone 16 Pro line.
