Verdict: The TCL 40 XL is a genuine U.S. phone launched in May 2023 for $149. Its 6.75-inch display, 5,000mAh battery, expandable storage and low used-market price can suit basic users, but it is a 4G-only Android 13 device with entry-level performance, uncertain software longevity and difficult availability. Buy it only when the exact U.S. model is verified, the seller offers returns, and the price is well below newer 5G phones.
U.S. price and availability
TCL announced North American availability in May 2023 with a starting price of $149. That is a historical launch price, not a guaranteed 2026 retail price. TCL still documents the model on its U.S. 40 Series page, while the official TCL Canada product page showed the 40 XL at $149 but sold out when checked: TCL Canada 40 XL.
In practice, remaining inventory is likely to be new old stock, marketplace stock or restored/refurbished units rather than dependable direct sales from TCL. A Walmart listing showed a U.S.-version phone at $152.99 but out of stock, and a separate listing covered restored stock: standard listing and Restored listing. Seller, condition, warranty and return terms can differ substantially, so treat every listing as a separate transaction.
Do not confuse the 40 XL with another 40-series model, an international variant or the TCL 40 X 5G. Require the model number, U.S. version, unlocked status and a carrier-compatible IMEI before paying.

Key specifications
| Feature | 40 XL detail | What it means in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. launch | May 2023 | Older budget hardware |
| Launch price | From $149 | Historical figure; current prices vary |
| Display | 6.75-inch HD+ NXTVISION, 20:9 | Large viewing area, lower sharpness than Full HD+ |
| Rear cameras | 50MP main, 2MP depth, 2MP macro | Main sensor does most of the photographic work |
| Front camera | 8MP | Basic selfies and video calls |
| Processor | MediaTek Helio G37 octa-core | Entry-level performance |
| Memory and storage | 4GB RAM, 128GB storage | Some sellers advertise different configurations |
| Expansion | microSD up to 512GB | Card sold separately |
| Battery | 5,000mAh | Capacity is not a guaranteed runtime |
| Cellular | 4G LTE | Not a 5G phone |
| Operating system at launch | Android 13 | Current update support is not established |
These specifications come from TCL’s global announcement, U.S. press release and U.S. product overview. A Walmart listing claims a 90Hz display, but that refresh rate was not confirmed on TCL’s primary U.S. page. Listings advertising 6GB RAM or 256GB storage should be treated as variant- or seller-specific until the model number and packaging prove otherwise.
What the 6.75-inch display is like
The 6.75-inch diagonal is the 40 XL’s clearest advantage for streaming, reading, maps and accessibility. TCL adds its NXTVISION display-enhancement branding and dual speakers, features aimed at media consumption. The 20:9 shape gives the phone a tall footprint.
HD+ resolution is the trade-off. Text and fine images will not look as crisp as they do on a Full HD+ budget phone, and NXTVISION cannot change the panel’s native pixel count. The large body can also be awkward for one-handed use. Choose it for physical size, not because the screen is premium by current standards.
How useful is the triple-camera system?
The rear array contains a 50MP main camera, a 2MP depth camera and a 2MP macro camera; the front camera is 8MP. TCL lists the configuration on its 40 Series page.
50MP main camera
This is the camera to rely on for ordinary daylight snapshots. The megapixel count describes sensor output, not guaranteed image quality; lighting, processing and motion still matter.
2MP depth camera
The depth sensor primarily assists portrait effects and background separation. It is not a general-purpose second lens.
2MP macro camera
The macro sensor is intended for very close subjects, but its low resolution limits fine detail. It does not substitute for an ultrawide or telephoto camera; no ultrawide camera is specified here.

- Triple Camera System – 13MP main camera, 2MP depth sensor, and 2MP macro lens for capturing every moment in detail. 8MP Front Camera – Perfect for high-quality selfies and video calls with clear, crisp resolution.
8MP front camera
It is adequate for basic selfies and video calls, with no evidence in the supplied specifications that it delivers premium low-light or video performance.
Performance, storage and battery
The MediaTek Helio G37 and 4GB of RAM fit calls, messaging, email, social apps, navigation, streaming and light multitasking. They are a poor match for demanding 3D games, intensive editing or heavy multitasking. Four gigabytes is modest in 2026, so app reloads and slower transitions are realistic compromises.
The standard U.S. specification is 128GB of internal storage with a microSD slot supporting cards up to 512GB; TCL notes that the card is sold separately. This is useful for downloaded video, music and photos, provided the specific unit has the standard configuration.
The 5,000mAh battery is generous for an entry-level phone. Actual endurance changes with brightness, signal strength, streaming, GPS, games and battery age. TCL’s “all-day” positioning is a manufacturer claim, not an independent runtime test. A restored phone may have materially less capacity than a new one, so ask for battery-health information where available.
4G, NFC and carrier compatibility
TCL positioned the 40 XL as the 4G member of its U.S. lineup, separate from 5G models. It should not be marketed or purchased as a 5G phone. Retailer listings identify the U.S. version as lacking NFC; confirm the exact model before purchase if you use tap-to-pay, transit cards or NFC accessories. Do not assume Google Wallet contactless payments will work.
Marketplace descriptions mention AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon support, while also listing exclusions such as Visible, Boost Mobile, Boost Infinite, Assurance Wireless, Consumer Cellular and Xfinity. Those claims can describe a different regional variant or omit activation restrictions. Complete these checks:
- Record the exact model number and confirm it is the U.S. version.
- Run the IMEI through your carrier’s compatibility tool before opening the phone.
- Confirm required LTE bands and VoLTE support with the carrier.
- Ask whether the device is truly unlocked and free of a blacklist or unpaid balance.
- Keep a return option in case activation fails.
Android 13 and software longevity
The 40 XL launched with Android 13, documented in TCL’s official user manual and U.S. launch material. The available sources do not establish a current Android-version or security-update commitment. That matters more in 2026 than it did at launch: banking, identity and other sensitive apps may eventually require newer Android versions or security levels.
Rank #3
Before accepting a used phone, open Settings and record the installed Android version and security-patch date. If the seller cannot provide that information or a meaningful warranty, the software risk should be priced into the purchase.
When the 40 XL makes sense
Buy only if
- The price is clearly below newer 5G budget phones.
- You mainly need calls, messaging, streaming, navigation and light photography.
- You value a very large screen and battery more than compact size.
- You can live without 5G and likely without NFC.
- The U.S. model, IMEI compatibility, condition, return window and warranty are documented.
- A refurbished unit has credible battery and seller information.
Skip it if
- The asking price is near or above $150 without exceptional warranty coverage.
- You need tap-to-pay, 5G, demanding games or several years of updates.
- You expect strong night photography, optical zoom or an ultrawide camera.
- The listing has no model number, seller identity, condition statement or activation guarantee.
As a practical guide—not a current market-price claim—around $100 or less can be interesting for a verified refurbished basic phone. Around its $149 launch positioning, the large display and battery must be your priorities. Above $150, the value case becomes difficult unless condition and warranty are unusually strong.
Newer alternatives to check
TCL 50 XL 5G
TCL’s 50 XL 5G is a newer large-screen option with a 6.78-inch FHD+ panel, 120Hz refresh rate, 5G, a 50MP rear camera system, 5,010mAh battery and storage expansion up to 2TB according to TCL. Verify its current price, stock, NFC and update policy before comparing value.
TCL 40 SE
The TCL global mobile portfolio lists the 40 SE with a 6.75-inch 90Hz NXTVISION display, stereo speakers and a 5,010mAh battery. It is also an older 40-series phone, so U.S. bands, software support, availability and price require separate confirmation.
Restored marketplace units
A restored 40 XL can cost less, but battery health, accessories, blacklist status, seller warranty and return exclusions become part of the specification. Prefer listings with a named seller, explicit condition, IMEI or activation coverage and a written return policy.
Final buying advice
The TCL 40 XL remains a legitimate large-screen budget phone, not a new 2026 release. Its strongest case is a deeply discounted, returnable U.S. unit for a light user who wants display size, expandable storage and a large battery. Its 4G-only connectivity, probable NFC limitation, aging Helio G37 platform, Android 13 starting point and uncertain support make the original $149 positioning hard to justify when newer 5G alternatives are similarly priced.
