Android TV Data Saver was a genuine Google app, but it is no longer a dependable current feature. Google introduced it in India in 2019 for televisions using phone hotspots and other limited mobile connections. It could lower streaming quality and issue usage alerts, yet third-party catalogues record the app as removed from Google Play on August 10, 2021. An archived APK may install on some older devices, but installation does not mean the TV firmware supports it.
For a capped connection today, use each streaming app’s quality controls plus data limits and alerts on the phone, hotspot, or router. Treat the old TV app as legacy software, not a guaranteed fix.
What Android TV Data Saver was
Google launched Android TV Data Saver on September 17, 2019, initially in India, for Android TV devices connected through mobile hotspots. The package was distributed as an Android TV application developed by Google LLC, with the historical package ID com.google.android.apps.nbu.smartconnect.tv. Google said the feature could provide “up to 3x” more viewing time, depending on usage and video quality—not a guaranteed compression ratio.
Its original functions included:
- Reducing data consumed by streaming and other TV activity on mobile connections.
- Adjusting video quality automatically to use less bandwidth.
- Showing alerts at reported thresholds of 100 MB, 500 MB, and 1 GB.
- Helping users follow a “Hotspot Guide” when connecting a TV through a phone.
The feature was aimed at prepaid, capped, rural fixed-wireless, satellite, and hotspot connections. On unlimited home broadband, reducing quality can make the picture worse without solving a meaningful billing problem. Google’s launch announcement is available at Google’s announcement.

Is Android TV Data Saver still available?
Current evidence indicates that the original app is no longer generally available through Google Play. AppBrain records the listing as removed on August 10, 2021, with version 1.0.381525217_release as its last listed release: AppBrain’s record. APKMirror retains archived builds, including 1.0.416680574_release, uploaded June 26, 2022: APKMirror’s archive.
Those archives do not establish current Google support, Play certification, regional availability, or compatibility with modern Android TV and Google TV hardware. Google’s current Android TV help index also has no general Data Saver setup guide: Android TV Help. The safest description is that the app appears discontinued or withdrawn from Play, while remnants may remain on older or manufacturer-specific devices.
How it was supposed to work
The app was designed to detect a mobile-oriented connection, influence streaming quality, and warn as usage accumulated. Actual savings depended on the service’s resolution, bitrate, codec, frame rate, advertisements, buffering, and delivery decisions. A system feature could not guarantee that every app followed one identical quality policy.
Do not confuse this product with the Data Saver switch on an Android phone. Phone Data Saver generally restricts background mobile-data access while allowing active apps to continue, with exceptions for apps granted unrestricted access. Android TV’s platform behavior is different: Google’s developer documentation describes approximately 800 Kbps for foreground applications and 10 Kbps for background applications under Data Saver conditions. These are development behaviors, not a promise that every television, firmware build, or vendor exposes the same consumer control: Android’s Data Saver documentation.
How to check an older TV for the setting
There is no universal current Google-supported menu path. On devices that still expose the legacy integration, the path may resemble:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Network & Internet.
- Look for Data Saver, data usage, or a metered-network option.
- If present, enable it and leave the menu.
- Return to the setting to confirm that it remains enabled, then monitor the hotspot’s usage during a known streaming session.
Labels and availability vary by manufacturer; Google notes that Android TV settings are not identical on all devices (network settings guidance, device-specific settings guidance). A menu entry alone does not prove that the underlying feature works.
Why the switch is missing or turns itself off
Users and contemporary testing reported settings that appeared but would not stay enabled, including on some Chromecast with Google TV and JBL Link Bar configurations. Reports include both a reverting switch and devices with no Data Saver option at all (independent testing; Google community report; missing-feature report).

Common causes
- The TV is on ordinary Wi-Fi rather than a supported mobile hotspot.
- The manufacturer did not implement the required data-management integration.
- The app targets an older firmware generation.
- The device uses Google TV branding but does not expose the old Android TV utility.
- Region, model, or system-package restrictions leave the interface incomplete.
Try restarting both TV and hotspot, forgetting and reconnecting to the hotspot, and installing the manufacturer’s latest firmware. If the switch still disappears or returns to Off, treat that as a compatibility failure rather than a setting you can reliably repair. Changing to a hotspot may not fix it.
Does it reduce data in Netflix, YouTube, and every app?
It was intended to reduce overall TV traffic, especially streaming, but no universal per-app saving is guaranteed. Services choose their own adaptive bitrate, resolution, codec, advertising, and buffering behavior. A system-level control cannot promise one fixed reduction for Netflix, YouTube, or every other application.
What to use instead in 2026
Set quality inside each streaming app
Look for Data usage, Video quality, Playback quality, Resolution, Bandwidth saver, or Low data. This is usually the most direct way to lower streaming bitrate. Reducing resolution is particularly noticeable on a large 4K screen, so choose the lowest quality you can tolerate rather than assuming the minimum is always best.
Enforce limits on the phone hotspot
The phone supplying the connection may offer a hotspot data limit, warning threshold, billing-cycle reset, per-device usage, timeout, or carrier data-management tool. Menus differ by Android version and manufacturer. A hard limit protects the mobile plan more reliably than an obsolete TV toggle, although it can interrupt playback abruptly.

Use router or gateway controls
A 4G/5G router or fixed-wireless gateway can provide monthly quotas, alerts, per-device limits, schedules, and traffic reports. These controls apply to the whole connection. They cannot manage traffic when the TV connects directly to a phone hotspot.
Download supported content
Where a service permits downloads, watch offline content or cast locally when supported. Google specifically described casting downloaded media from the Files app as a way to avoid additional internet consumption: Google’s original announcement. Casting is not automatically phone-data mirroring; in many cases the TV streams directly, while local playback may use no internet data.
Manage updates carefully
App updates, previews, advertisements, and background activity can add traffic beyond the video itself. Use update scheduling or metered-network controls where the TV manufacturer provides them, but do not disable security updates indiscriminately.
Consider another streaming device only for its controls
An external Google TV or Android TV device does not inherently consume less data. Consider one only if it offers a supported data mode, per-app controls, or better monitoring. The bottleneck may be the mobile plan, not the television software.

Why sideloading an archived APK is a poor default
An archived package may have an Android 8.0-or-later catalogue requirement and may install on some hardware, but that is not proof of compatibility. It may fail to integrate with current settings, be disabled by firmware updates, or install without changing network behavior. Unofficial APK mirrors also introduce supply-chain and malware risks, and sideloading bypasses current Play certification and regional checks.
Do not use an ADB command found online as a substitute. Google documents ADB Data Saver commands for developer testing, not as a universal way to enable the consumer feature on every TV. Testing can require USB or network debugging and should be disabled afterward or cleared by rebooting; see Google’s developer documentation.
A practical diagnosis checklist
Before seeking model-specific help, record:
- TV or streaming-device manufacturer and exact model.
- Android TV or Google TV version and firmware build.
- Country or region.
- Whether the connection is a phone hotspot, metered Wi-Fi, home broadband, or a cellular router.
- Whether Data Saver is absent, greyed out, or switches off immediately.
That information distinguishes a missing feature from an unsupported connection and prevents treating Google TV and older Android TV implementations as interchangeable.
Bottom line
Android TV Data Saver was real Google software built for limited mobile connections, with quality reduction and usage alerts. It is now best treated as a legacy, region- and device-dependent feature: the Play listing was removed, archived APKs are not official support, and documented activation failures remain. For dependable savings, lower quality in each streaming app and put warnings or hard caps on the hotspot or router.
