Google Translate Shuts Down in Mainland China: What Happened and What Works Now

Google did not shut down Translate worldwide. It discontinued its consumer Google Translate service in mainland China during the September 30–October 3, 2022 transition period, citing low usage. The mainland website redirected visitors toward Google’s Hong Kong translation page, which contemporary reports said was inaccessible from mainland networks.

The mainland mobile app had reportedly already been discontinued in 2021, and Chrome’s built-in translation function was also reported to have stopped working for users in China. Evidence reviewed through August 18, 2026 confirms the withdrawal but does not establish a later official relaunch.

When did Google Translate stop working in mainland China?

Google Translate was introduced through a dedicated mainland website and smartphone app in 2017. Users began reporting access problems around Saturday, September 30, 2022. Google’s explanation was reported on October 3, making those dates a transition period rather than a single universally documented shutdown minute.

  • 2021: Google reportedly discontinued its mainland mobile app.
  • September 30, 2022: Reports described the mainland website becoming unavailable or redirecting users.
  • October 3, 2022: Google’s stated reason—low usage—was publicly reported.

TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report described the website transition, while VOA reported Google’s clarification about the earlier app withdrawal.

What exactly was shut down?

Product or access path What happened
Mainland website (translate.google.cn) Stopped operating normally and redirected users toward Google’s Hong Kong translation site.
Mobile app Reportedly discontinued in mainland China in 2021, before the website change.
Chrome translation Contemporary AP-based coverage reported that Chrome’s built-in translation feature no longer functioned for users in China.
Third-party integrations Apps relying on Google’s consumer translation endpoints, browser behavior, or unofficial access methods could lose translation features from mainland networks.
Hong Kong service It remained a separate destination, but reports said it was inaccessible from mainland networks.
Google Translate globally Not shut down. The 2022 decision concerned mainland China, not every Chinese-speaking market or every Google translation product.

Consumer Translate, Chrome’s browser integration, and Google Cloud Translation APIs are separate products. A change to one does not automatically prove that the others have identical availability, pricing, or network reachability.

Why did Google remove the mainland service?

Google’s stated reason

Google said it discontinued the mainland-China service because of low usage, according to Bloomberg’s October 3, 2022 report. That is the only clearly attributable corporate explanation in the coverage cited here.

The market and access context

Many Google services were already unavailable or difficult to reach on mainland networks. Domestic products such as Baidu and Sogou occupied the local translation market, reducing the practical audience for a Google consumer service. Google had also withdrawn its mainland search service in 2010 after disputes involving censorship and cyberattacks.

What is not established

The withdrawal occurred during worsening United States–China technology and political tensions, which prompted speculation about political motives. The available reports do not establish that Chinese authorities directly ordered Google Translate to close. The careful description is that Google discontinued its mainland service, after which users lost ordinary access to the redirected Hong Kong endpoint.

Was it a Chinese ban or a voluntary Google shutdown?

Both extremes are misleading. Google publicly described the action as a discontinuation caused by low usage, rather than announcing a government ban. At the same time, the resulting Hong Kong redirect was inaccessible from mainland networks, so the practical outcome for users was loss of access. “Google discontinued Google Translate in mainland China” captures both the stated corporate action and the observed result without claiming an unproven government order.

Can you still use Google Translate in China?

Mainland China

Do not treat an installed app, an old bookmark, or a cached page as evidence that the mainland service is available. The app may need Google accounts, endpoints, or backends that cannot be reached from mainland networks. A bookmark to the Hong Kong URL was specifically reported as unreliable because that destination was inaccessible from mainland China.

Hong Kong and Taiwan

Hong Kong is a separate service environment from mainland China; its translation page was the reported redirect destination. Taiwan is also a separate jurisdiction and should not be described as part of the mainland shutdown. The evidence here does not provide a current, independent test of every Google Translate surface in either location.

Roaming, overseas connections, and VPNs

An overseas roaming connection or other route may change which endpoint a device can reach, but that is not the same as Google officially offering a mainland-China service. Connectivity, account behavior, network conditions, service terms, and applicable rules vary. Do not rely on any routing method without testing it in the exact location and network where translation will be needed, and check relevant laws and policies.

Practical alternatives for mainland China

Option Best fit Capabilities and evidence Important limitations
Baidu Translate Mainland residents, China-based teams, and developers needing a locally oriented service Baidu advertises text, document, image, and speech translation; its general API page lists more than 200 languages and more than 40,000 language directions. See Baidu Translate Open Platform. Chinese-language registration, identity verification, local payment, and account requirements may apply. Review data handling before uploading confidential material.
Microsoft Translator Developers and organizations already using Microsoft or Azure Microsoft positions Translator as an API for web, desktop, and mobile applications and advertises up to 2 million characters per month at no cost for the referenced partner offering. See Microsoft Translator. The cited page does not guarantee mainland-China network access. Test the intended endpoint, Azure region, authentication, latency, and compliance setup.
Offline translation tools Travelers, students, and field workers with unreliable connectivity Downloaded language packs can support text, camera, speech, or dictionary functions without a live connection, depending on the app and operating system. Offline support varies by language pair and paid tier. Test every required feature in airplane mode before departure.
Human translation Legal, medical, immigration, financial, or safety-critical content A qualified translator can check context, names, units, terminology, and required certification. Costs more and takes longer than machine translation; it is unnecessary for many casual travel phrases.

Baidu pricing and product details

Baidu’s document-translation page lists more than 200 languages, testing of up to 5 million characters, and a listed postpaid price of 49 yuan per million characters. Its enterprise page lists Team at 99 yuan per person per month, Enterprise Basic at 168 yuan, and Enterprise Standard at 279 yuan, with minimum seats and annual billing as shown on that page. These are published plan signals, not a guarantee that every account receives identical terms. See Baidu document translation and Baidu enterprise translation plans.

The safest setup for travelers

  1. Download the required Chinese and target-language packs before leaving reliable internet access.
  2. Test text, camera, pronunciation, and speech features with the phone in airplane mode.
  3. Save addresses, hotel names, emergency phrases, medical information, food-allergy statements, and transport instructions as offline text or images.
  4. Carry a second offline dictionary or printed phrasebook in case a language pack fails.
  5. Use human help for medical, legal, immigration, or safety-critical instructions rather than trusting an unreviewed machine translation.

What developers should check before migrating

A developer cannot safely replace every Google-related translation dependency with one new API key. First identify what the application actually used:

  • the consumer Google Translate website;
  • Chrome’s browser translation;
  • an unofficial scraper or embedded web view;
  • Google Cloud Translation; or
  • a cached or locally hosted model.

Then test the replacement from the real mainland network and deployment environment. Compare endpoint reachability, authentication, quotas, requests per second, character billing, SDK support, terminology customization, logging, data retention, and regional compliance. For confidential source code, contracts, passports, medical records, or customer content, confirm whether the vendor stores submitted text, images, or audio and whether private deployment is available.

Baidu offers mainland-oriented APIs and enterprise options, while Microsoft Translator is a plausible international API for Azure users. Neither product page cited here proves universal mainland availability, so production migration requires a network-specific pilot and failure monitoring.

Is Google Translate coming back?

The evidence available through August 18, 2026 confirms the 2022 mainland-China discontinuation but does not establish a later official relaunch. Treat any claim of a return as unconfirmed until Google publishes a new statement or current testing from a mainland connection demonstrates ordinary access. Historical traffic figures, including the frequently cited 53.5 million visits in August 2022, describe visits at that time—not current users or proof of future availability.

Bottom line

Google Translate was discontinued in mainland China in late September and early October 2022, with Google citing low usage. The mainland app had gone earlier, the website redirected to an inaccessible-from-mainland Hong Kong page, and Chrome translation was also reported affected. This was not a worldwide shutdown. For current use, Baidu is the most obvious mainland-oriented replacement, offline tools are the most dependable travel backup, Microsoft Translator suits some developer and enterprise workflows, and high-consequence content still warrants qualified human review.
