The China-market vivo Y78 5G is a May 2023 mid-range phone built around MediaTek’s Dimensity 7020, a 50MP main camera, a 6.64-inch 120Hz LCD and a 5,000mAh typical-capacity battery. Its launch prices were CNY 1,399, CNY 1,699 and CNY 1,999, depending on memory and storage. It launched in China, and vivo’s reviewed China listing now shows the phone as out of stock.
Check the variant before comparing prices: the international vivo Y78 5G is a different device with a Snapdragon 695, 6.78-inch AMOLED display and 64MP OIS camera. The specifications below apply only to the China Dimensity 7020/50MP model.
Official China specifications and launch information are available from vivo China. The China sales date was May 13, 2023, following the May 10 announcement. Launch prices are historical MSRPs, not verified September 2026 street prices.

The official China product page currently displays an out-of-stock status. Launch reporting described the phone as a China release; no confirmed US launch or current official international price was established for this Dimensity 7020 model.

Vivo’s global specification page confirms the international hardware. Marketplace listings that simply say “vivo Y78 5G” can therefore describe either phone.

Display and design
The China phone uses a 6.64-inch 2388×1080 LCD rather than the AMOLED panel on the global Y78. Its refresh-rate modes include 120Hz, 90Hz and 60Hz, with up to 240Hz touch sampling. Vivo notes that 120Hz operation can depend on supported applications and system interfaces, so it should be read as an upper limit rather than a guarantee for every app. The panel is approximately 394ppi, with an aspect ratio near 20.9:9 and a screen-to-body ratio of about 91.06%.
At about 190g, the handset is roughly 8mm thick. It has a side fingerprint reader, USB Type-C, a 3.5mm headphone socket and dual-SIM support. Color names are translated from vivo China’s listing and may appear differently in import listings.

Dimensity 7020 platform and memory
The Dimensity 7020 is a 6nm mid-range 5G platform, not a flagship chipset. Its two Cortex-A78 performance cores run at up to 2.2GHz, while six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores reach up to 2.0GHz. Configurations use 8GB or 12GB of physical LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. No benchmark or gaming result is established here, so these specifications should not be treated as a measured frame-rate promise.
Camera hardware
The rear array combines a 50MP f/1.8 autofocus main camera with a 2MP f/2.4 depth camera. The secondary sensor is for depth effects; it is not an ultrawide or telephoto lens. Vivo lists digital zoom up to 10×. An 8MP f/2.0 camera handles selfies.

Megapixel counts describe the hardware, not finished-image quality. Independent camera testing would be needed to judge detail, dynamic range, autofocus consistency or low-light performance. The 64MP OIS camera belongs to the separate global Y78 5G, not this China model.

Vivo quotes a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity and a 4,900mAh rated capacity; the rated figure is the lower regulatory measurement, while typical capacity is the advertised nominal figure. Charging is 44W, and the USB Type-C port supports OTG reverse charging. Capacity alone does not establish a specific number of hours of battery life.

The China phone shipped with Android 13 and OriginOS 3. OriginOS is vivo’s China-market interface. Imported units can differ from international Funtouch OS phones in Google-service availability, language choices, notifications, app compatibility and update delivery. There is no current official update schedule in the cited material for this exact model, so buyers should not assume a particular Android or OriginOS upgrade.
Using a China import outside China
5G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling depend on the exact model, supported bands, carrier provisioning and firmware. Before paying for an imported unit, verify:
- The model number and that the listing is the Dimensity 7020/50MP China version.
- LTE and 5G bands against your carrier’s requirements.
- Google Play Services, language support and notification behavior.
- VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling compatibility with the intended SIM.
- Charger plug, voltage compatibility and included accessories.
- Warranty region, return terms and whether the device is new, refurbished or old inventory.
- Any “global ROM” claim, which does not by itself guarantee bands, services or updates.
Do not assume a China import will work fully on a US or other foreign network without checking the specific model and carrier.
Is the China vivo Y78 5G still worth considering?
Its appeal is the combination of a high-refresh-rate screen, 5G Dimensity 7020 platform, large battery, 44W charging, up to 12GB of RAM, 256GB storage and a headphone jack at a low original China price. The compromises are an LCD panel, a basic 2MP depth sensor, 2023-era Android 13 software, uncertain long-term support, China-specific software and the practical risks of importing an out-of-stock model.
