The Cat B30 is a rugged 2015 feature phone, not an Android smartphone. It offers a keypad, basic calling and texting, FM radio and an IP67-rated shell, but its radio supports 2G and 3G—not 4G LTE or VoLTE. That makes it a poor default choice for cellular service in the United States in 2026. Before buying a used one, verify the exact model with the carrier and inspect its battery and seals.

What the Cat B30 was designed to do
Cat Phones positioned the B30 as a successor to the B25 for people working outdoors or in demanding environments, including tradespeople, farmers and industrial workers. Its selling points were a physical keypad, basic communications and a tougher enclosure—not a large app library or fast mobile data. The original announcement cited IP67 protection, a drop claim, 3G, dual SIM, FM radio, a flashlight and a 2-megapixel camera. Original product announcement
Is the Cat B30 a smartphone?
No. It runs a proprietary feature-phone interface with a physical keypad. It can handle calls, SMS and MMS, contacts, alarms, calendar and calculator functions, FM radio, MP3 playback, simple photos and limited browser or data functions where a compatible network remains available. It cannot run contemporary Android or iOS apps. Specification listings also show no Wi-Fi or GPS. NewMobile specifications

In practical terms, it is not suitable for app-based banking, authentication, navigation, rideshare or modern messaging. Its basic browser and data features are of little use where compatible legacy cellular service has disappeared. The appeal is simplicity and physical controls, not versatility.
How durable is it, and what does IP67 mean?
IP67 indicates protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes under test conditions. It does not establish safety for prolonged submersion, salt or chlorinated water, hot water, or high-pressure jets. The B30 was also marketed with a drop-resistance claim of up to 1.8 meters onto concrete; that is not a promise that an individual phone will survive every fall.
The quick-start guide says the rear cover and USB and headphone-port covers must be properly secured for the protection rating to apply. It warns that water damage caused by improperly fitted covers may not be covered by warranty. Cat B30 quick-start guide

Condition matters especially on a used phone. A missing or cracked port flap, loose rear screw, damaged gasket, distorted cover, previous repair or hard impact can compromise sealing. A B30’s original rating does not prove that its aged seals still work. Do not water-test a used handset unless you are prepared to lose it.

Will the Cat B30 work on current U.S. networks?
Do not count on it for U.S. cellular service. The commonly documented B30 radio supports 2G GSM and 3G UMTS, with no LTE or VoLTE. AT&T shut down its 3G network in February 2022, and the Cat B30 does not appear in the carrier’s current tested-device materials. AT&T 3G shutdown information · AT&T tested-device list
An “unlocked” label only concerns whether a handset is restricted to a particular carrier; it does not show that a carrier still operates its radio technology, supports its bands or permits it on the network. A B30 should not be assumed compatible with Verizon or other U.S. carriers based on a seller’s generic “GSM” claim.

Outside the U.S., usability depends on the country, carrier, remaining 2G service, exact regional model, supported bands and SIM provisioning. Check the carrier’s current compatibility guidance and have it verify the exact IMEI before paying. AT&T’s Bring Your Own Device page links to compatibility resources; its device-support selector is another starting point, not proof that this model is supported.
How to insert a SIM card and microSD card
- Switch the phone off before opening it.
- Use the supplied tool or a suitable small driver to loosen the rear-cover screw, then remove the cover. Avoid forcing the screw or cover.
- Remove the battery if required to access the card slots.
- Open the SIM-card cover and slide in the first SIM in the orientation shown by the guide. Repeat for the second slot if your handset is a dual-SIM version.
- Open the microSD-card cover and insert a compatible card, following the slot markings and guide.
- Refit the battery and rear cover, then tighten the screw only until secure. Close the port covers before exposing the phone to dust or water.
SIM orientation and slot arrangement can vary, so follow the diagrams in the quick-start guide rather than guessing from another regional model.

The B30 is generally listed with a 1,000 mAh lithium-ion battery. Its original estimates of up to six hours of talk time and roughly ten days of standby are not reliable expectations for a used phone: battery age, network conditions and coverage can reduce runtime substantially. Manuals and listings do not agree on removability for every regional version, so inspect the exact unit before buying.

Before using a second-hand battery, check for swelling, leakage, unusual heat, corrosion or a handset that shuts off under load. Do not charge or use a swollen lithium-ion battery. Also check whether a suitable replacement is genuinely available and whether the micro-USB port feels secure.
The quick-start guide recommends an appropriate Cat-approved charger and cable, and says to hold the red end-call/power button to switch on. It includes an eight-hour first-charge instruction; that is a historical manual direction, not a general requirement for modern lithium-ion battery care. Cat B30 quick-start guide

Consider one for collecting, offline use or a low-distraction handset only if you have verified its intended network and accept that its age and condition may limit reliability. It is a poor default purchase for U.S. primary service or dependable emergency use: no LTE or VoLTE means it may not register on current networks, and a used battery can fail without warning. Emergency calling depends on a supported carrier connection, not simply on the phone powering on.

- Large 5.7 Inch Display: Features a 1080 x 2160 resolution screen for crisp visuals.
- Long Battery Life: 4000 mAh battery provides extended usage time.
- Dual Camera System: Rear 48MP and 2MP cameras capture detailed photos and selfies.
- Waterproof Design: Rugged build withstands splashes and accidental spills.
- Unlocked For All Carriers: Compatible with GSM networks like T-Mobile and AT&T.
Before purchase, check each of these points:
- Exact model and region: Ask for the model identification and confirm its bands and SIM configuration.
- IMEI and carrier: Ask the carrier to verify the IMEI and permitted technologies; do not rely on “unlocked,” “all GSM networks” or a generic compatibility claim.
- Battery: Inspect for swelling, leakage, corrosion and unexpected shutdowns; establish whether an appropriate replacement is available.
- Seals and housing: Inspect the port covers, rear cover, screw and visible gasket area for damage, looseness or prior repair.
- Operation: Test keypad, display, charging port, speaker, microphone, camera, flashlight, Bluetooth and both SIM slots if applicable.
- Seller terms: Prefer a return option and ask what battery, cable and accessories are included. Old stock and used listings vary in condition and price.
- Price: Compare the cost with a current 4G feature phone that supports the carrier’s required LTE and VoLTE service.
Claims that the B30 is “4G-ready,” compatible with every network, or certified to a military standard should not be accepted without model-specific evidence. Secondary listings make MIL-STD-810G claims, but the clearest cited product materials emphasize IP67 and the drop claim; that is not enough to establish a specific military-standard test result. Example secondary listing
What to choose instead
| Option | Best for | Trade-off | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current 4G rugged feature phone | Physical keys, basic calls and texts, and a rugged casing | May cost more than an ordinary feature phone. | LTE bands and VoLTE support for your carrier, battery availability, warranty and return policy. |
| Current rugged Android phone | Maps, work apps, authentication, camera and modern messaging | Typically larger and more complex, with more distractions and potentially shorter practical battery life under heavy use. | Carrier approval, software support, repair options and the specific device’s protection claims. |
| Ordinary current feature phone | Simplicity and basic communications without rugged-device pricing | Usually offers less protection from drops, dust and water. | Current network compatibility, LTE/VoLTE where required, warranty and battery support. |
For any replacement, network compatibility matters more than a “rugged” label. Confirm LTE and VoLTE support with the carrier before choosing a model.
