Want new AI-created artwork? Choose Generative. Want a personal photo to change with the weather? Choose Photo ambient. Both are in the Galaxy phone’s wallpaper settings, but they do different things, and availability depends on your model and software.
Before you start
Install available updates first: open Settings → Software update → Download and install. Samsung says Galaxy AI features generally require Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, but that does not guarantee either wallpaper feature is available on a particular phone. Samsung’s Galaxy AI availability information and its Generative Wallpaper device list are feature-specific; check your exact model rather than relying only on the presence of other Galaxy AI tools.
Samsung’s instructions use both Creative and Create with AI for the wallpaper menu, depending on the device or software version. Labels and available choices can also vary by region. Generative Wallpaper is subject to a Google policy restriction for account users under 13, with age rules varying by country. Samsung does not establish that a Samsung account or internet connection is required for every wallpaper feature, so follow any requirements shown on your phone.
Create a Generative wallpaper
Generative makes a new stylized background using Samsung’s templates or categories and selectable prompts. Samsung’s documented flow does not establish that every phone offers an unrestricted text box for arbitrary prompts.

- Go to the Home screen and touch and hold an empty area.
- Tap Wallpaper and style → Change wallpapers.
- Under Creative or Create with AI, tap Generative.
- Choose a template or category, then select one of the prompts offered.
- Tap Generate or Generate wallpaper.
- Choose a generated result and tap Set.
- Select Lock screen, Home screen, or both. Depending on your phone, the destination choices may appear after Set or Next.
- Review the preview, adjust the framing if controls are available, then tap Done.
The chosen image is applied to the screen or screens you selected. If the composition is awkward behind the clock, notifications, icons, or widgets, reposition it in the preview where possible or generate another result. Samsung’s steps are documented in its US wallpaper instructions and Canada guide.
Make a personal photo react to weather with Photo ambient
Photo ambient does not create a new scene. It starts with a photo from Gallery and adds effects that reflect weather and time, such as rain droplets or sunlight. Samsung describes it primarily as a Lock screen effect.

- Open Settings → Wallpaper and style → Change wallpapers.
- Under Create with AI, tap Photo ambient.
- Tap Try now.
- If prompted, tap Set up and configure the Weather app; allow the requested permissions.
- Select a photo from Gallery and adjust it in the preview if editing controls are offered.
- Tap Done.
Photo ambient uses the default location configured in the Weather app. An outdoor photo taken during the day is generally a better fit for the effect than an indoor or night image. See Samsung’s Photo ambient setup instructions and feature description.
Choose the right wallpaper feature

Set a regular wallpaper instead
If you want a static picture or simply prefer a built-in background, use the standard wallpaper picker:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper and style → Change wallpapers.
- Choose an available source, such as Featured, Gallery, Colors, or Wallpaper services.
- Select the image, choose its destination screen when prompted, and finish with Done.
The listed sources are not identical on every Galaxy phone. If an AI option is absent, this route still lets you apply a Gallery photo or another available wallpaper.

If an AI wallpaper option is missing
- Install updates at Settings → Software update → Download and install, then restart the phone.
- Open Wallpaper and style → Change wallpapers from Settings or the Home screen and check under both Creative and Create with AI.
- Confirm your exact phone model against Samsung’s Generative Wallpaper compatibility information. A phone supporting Galaxy AI generally does not necessarily support every AI wallpaper feature.
- Check that the phone meets the general Android 14 and One UI 6.1 Galaxy AI baseline, while remembering that the wallpaper feature has its own model-specific availability.
- If the device uses a child or restricted Google account, check whether the age restriction applies in your country.
- If only Photo ambient is missing or does not work, configure the Weather app, verify its default location, and approve the requested permissions. Try a clear outdoor daytime photo if the effect is not apparent.
- If the feature remains unavailable, use Gallery or another wallpaper category. Samsung’s Galaxy AI support page notes that availability can depend on the device and software version.
Fix a wrong screen or poor framing
If the wallpaper landed on the wrong screen, repeat its setup and select the intended destination at the Set or Next stage. On a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip, inspect the choices carefully: the main or cover display may be offered separately from the Lock screen and Home screen. Samsung discusses front-screen customization in its foldable-device wallpaper guide.
For a badly framed Generative result, use preview positioning controls if available or generate another image. A layout that looks good without icons may be crowded on the Home screen, while the Lock screen must leave room for its clock and notifications.
What to know about compatibility, processing, and terms
Samsung’s wallpaper-specific compatibility list is not interchangeable with its general Galaxy AI list. Samsung names selected S-series, Z-series, and Tab devices for Generative Wallpaper, while listing exclusions that include A-series phones and some FE or Lite tablets. The supported list can change; use Samsung’s current device-specific information for your model.
Samsung says basic Galaxy AI features it provides are free, but enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features may have different terms or fees. Do not assume that every future feature will have the same terms. Samsung also distinguishes between on-device and cloud-based Galaxy AI processing and offers Settings → Galaxy AI → Process data only on device. That setting does not establish, by itself, how Generative Wallpaper is processed on every model and software version.
