HarmonyOS 3 launched in mainland China on July 27, 2022, but there was no single worldwide OTA date. Huawei opened a limited beta first, then expanded stable and regional releases in waves. The main device families Huawei later identified were the Mate 40, Mate 30, P40, Mate X2, nova 8 and MatePad Pro lines. Whether a particular unit qualified depended on its exact model code, market, carrier firmware and current software branch.
What HarmonyOS 3 added
HarmonyOS 3 was Huawei’s 2022 operating-system generation. Its headline feature was Super Device, which linked compatible Huawei products so a phone could coordinate with tablets, laptops, displays, earphones, watches and other equipment. The release also introduced service widgets and cards, larger home-screen folders and broader cross-device controls. Huawei’s overview is available at its HarmonyOS 3 feature page.
These were not universal capabilities. A function could require a particular hardware configuration, a compatible second device, a Huawei account or service, nearby-device permissions, and a specific regional build. A phone that could install HarmonyOS 3 was not automatically guaranteed every advertised feature.

The beta recruitment page is preserved by Huawei at developer.huawei.com. The July launch was reported by Xinhua, and Huawei Hong Kong published its regional announcement at consumer.huawei.com/hk.

Which Huawei phones were eligible?
Huawei’s later corporate summary says more than 100 types of devices were upgraded or scheduled for upgrade, naming these principal families: Mate 40, Mate 30, P40, Mate X2, nova 8 and MatePad Pro. That is a family-level summary, not a complete list of every model code or market variant. See Huawei’s retrospective for that statement.

Huawei’s current compatibility documentation for selected models is at consumer.huawei.com/cn/support/content/zh-cn15907707/. Because support pages are updated over time, they confirm compatibility but should not be read as a complete reconstruction of the original 2022 schedule.
Tablets and other Huawei products
MatePad tablets
The MatePad Pro family was among Huawei’s named upgrade groups. Tablet waves did not necessarily coincide with phone waves, so a MatePad Pro owner should verify the tablet’s own OTA rather than infer a date from a phone announcement.
Watches, displays and connected products
HarmonyOS 3 was an ecosystem release, and compatible watches, displays, earphones and other products could participate in Super Device or receive their own software. Their eligibility was product-specific and should be checked in the relevant regional support channel.
MateBook PCs
MateBook computers should not be treated as ordinary phone or tablet OTA candidates. The HarmonyOS 3 phone/tablet rollout did not establish that a MateBook could be converted through the same updater.
China, Hong Kong and global editions
A China-market HarmonyOS 3 list cannot be copied directly to an international Huawei device. Mainland China, Hong Kong, global and carrier editions can use different model identifiers, firmware branches, services and certification processes. Many international Huawei phones continued to use EMUI rather than receiving the mainland HarmonyOS build. Huawei’s global page itself says supported models and interfaces depend on the actual situation: consumer.huawei.com/en/harmonyos-3.

Imported phones are a frequent source of confusion: two devices with the same consumer name may have different regional software. Treat a Chinese schedule as relevant only when Huawei’s regional page or the device’s own updater confirms it for your model.

- Open Settings.
- Tap System & updates.
- Choose Software update.
- Tap Check for updates.
- Review the offered version, build number and release notes before installing.
Huawei documents this path at its software-update support page. Before contacting support, record the full model name and model code, current operating-system version, purchase country, carrier branding and whether the device was imported from mainland China.
Why an eligible device may not show the update
- Phased rollout: Huawei released packages in server-side waves, so two identical retail names could update at different times.
- Different model code or region: Storage, network and market variants can follow separate firmware branches.
- Carrier certification: Operator editions may wait for approval.
- Different channel: A beta, experience build and stable OTA are separate programs.
- Existing software branch: The installed build can determine which package is offered.
- Not included in that market: Eligibility in China does not establish eligibility globally.
Huawei warns that update-push timing can differ between devices; its guidance is available at consumer.huawei.com/cn/support/content/zh-cn15916202/. If no update appears, verify the model code and region, reboot, maintain adequate battery and storage, and use the official updater. Do not force-install an unrelated Chinese firmware package: mismatched software can affect language support, banking apps, network bands, warranty service, Google services and future OTAs.
Beta, experience and stable software are different
A beta required registration and review and could contain bugs, incomplete functions or app incompatibilities. An experience program was a regional or limited-access release. A stable OTA was the normal consumer channel. “Eligible” therefore describes a program or device scope; it does not promise immediate availability or imply that a beta was suitable for a primary phone. Back up important data before joining any test program.
Features that may be missing after an upgrade
Super Device, cards and other HarmonyOS 3 functions can depend on a compatible second device, NFC or Bluetooth, nearby-device permissions, Huawei services, hardware configuration and regional software. A feature listed on a support page may prove that it works on HarmonyOS 3.0 or 3.1, but it does not by itself prove that the device was in the original 2022 upgrade wave.

Did every P40 or Mate 40 receive HarmonyOS 3?
No universal promise can be made from the family name alone. Check the exact model code, region and OTA; Huawei’s family-level summary does not list every SKU or market schedule.
Is HarmonyOS 3 the same as EMUI 12?
No. They are different software identities and regional branches, even though some user-interface ideas and features may look similar.
