That is a share of launches—not a share of players, revenue, playtime, or all games still operating. The figure marks Telegram’s rise as a distribution channel, but it does not by itself show that those games found lasting audiences.
What the 21% figure actually measures
Game7’s State of Web3 Gaming 2024, produced with Naavik, reported that Telegram accounted for 21% of new Web3 game launches in its 2024 measurement period. It is a count-based launch share. It does not mean that 21% of Web3 players used Telegram, that Telegram games generated 21% of industry revenue, or that 21% of all Web3 games were active there. Game7’s report announcement says its broader work covered more than 2,500 blockchain games, 1,500 funding rounds, and 100 blockchain ecosystems over six years.
The date matters. The report description says its database included developments through September 30, 2024, and that annual 2024 data generally covered the first three quarters unless otherwise noted. Treat 21% as a historical 2024 result, not as a verified 2026 market share. The report excerpt provides that cutoff qualification.
Binance Research later described Telegram as hosting about 20% of Web3 game titles in 2024, citing Game7. That is consistent in direction, but “hosted titles” may not use the same denominator as “new launches,” so it should not be substituted for the 21% statistic. Binance Research’s review also characterizes Telegram’s comparable share in 2023 as negligible.

Why Telegram appealed to game developers
Telegram offered a way to put a lightweight game in front of people where they already communicate. Mini Apps open inside Telegram rather than requiring a separate app-store download. Channels, groups, bots, referrals, and social sharing can help a game reach communities directly; a web-based Mini App can also reduce the need to build a separate native client for every platform.
That setup suits games whose first session is quick and whose growth loop is social: casual and idle games, quests, leaderboards, collectibles, and referral-driven experiences. Telegram also had established crypto communities, making it a natural place to test blockchain features and reward campaigns. TON’s own description presents Mini Apps as a route to in-Telegram game launches and discusses advertising, digital assets, and in-game economies as possible monetization approaches; these are ecosystem claims, not proof that a particular game earns revenue. TON’s gaming overview explains that proposition.
Low installation friction is an acquisition advantage, not an audience guarantee. Telegram’s total user base is not the number of people available to play a given title, and an account that taps into a campaign is not necessarily a retained player.

Telegram and TON are different layers
Telegram is the user-facing messaging platform and Mini App container. A Mini App is the web-based game or application opened within that container. TON is a blockchain ecosystem used for on-chain functions, while TON Connect is the wallet-connection standard used in the relevant Telegram blockchain context. A game distributed through Telegram is not automatically a TON game, and Telegram should not be described as simply “running on TON.”

|---|---|
| Telegram | Messaging, social distribution, and the Mini App environment. |
| Mini App | The web-based game or application users open inside Telegram. |
| TON | Blockchain infrastructure for qualifying assets and on-chain activity. |
| TON Connect | Wallet connection for the applicable blockchain-enabled Mini Apps. |
Telegram’s published blockchain guidelines require relevant Mini Apps that issue or distribute blockchain assets to use TON and TON Connect. The stated policy dates were January 21, 2025, for new blockchain-based initiatives and February 21, 2025, for existing Mini Apps using other blockchains to transition. Those are policy deadlines, not evidence that every project complied. The guidelines also distinguish ordinary bots without Mini Apps, so the rule should not be generalized to every Telegram bot.
A launch boom amid a more selective games market
Telegram’s rise took place while Web3 game production was not expanding uniformly. Game7 reported 252 new Web3 game announcements by Q3 2024, 36% fewer than in 2023, alongside 104 newly announced blockchain networks intended to support games. Those are announcement counts, not counts of playable titles or live networks. The contrast illustrates how infrastructure launches can multiply even as game announcements decline.

- Game7 reported that more than 90% of launches came from indie teams, with RPG, casual, action, and strategy among the leading genres.
- Immutable was reported to have 181 announced titles, up 71% year over year; Arbitrum had 119, up 68%, with its Orbit Framework powering 23 new Web3 gaming networks.
- Across the games in its analysis—not Telegram games specifically—Game7 reported that 45% were playable and 34% had integrated blockchain infrastructure.
The playable and blockchain-integration figures are a reminder that an announcement, a launch listing, a playable product, and a game with meaningful on-chain functionality are separate milestones. They do not establish the quality or status of any individual Telegram title.
What launch share can—and cannot—tell you
The 21% figure supports a claim about where developers launched games. It does not answer whether players returned, paid, or spent meaningful time in them. That distinction is especially important when tap-to-earn or play-to-airdrop campaigns offer rewards: participation can rise without proving durable engagement or a sustainable game economy.
Wallet counts are not a reliable substitute for people. One person can control multiple wallets, and automation can inflate apparent activity. Game7 also noted limitations in measuring engagement from blockchain data. A game can use Telegram mainly for discovery or login while keeping gameplay elsewhere; it may be lightly blockchain-enabled, or not meaningfully blockchain-enabled at all. A token’s existence does not establish that the game economy works.
For a more useful assessment, developers and analysts should separate the funnel into measurable stages:
- Reach: impressions and campaign exposure.
- Activation: unique accounts that start and complete a meaningful first session.
- Human verification: estimated genuine users after bot, multi-account, and referral-abuse filtering.
- Retention: day-one, day-seven, and day-30 return rates, separated by organic and incentivized acquisition.
- Business performance: payer conversion, revenue per user, repeat sessions, and the cost of rewards per retained player.
- Economy health: token sources and sinks, reward sustainability, and activity that persists beyond an airdrop window.
These measures are a framework for evaluating a game; they are not outcomes established by the 21% launch statistic.

Telegram demonstrates that distribution can be embedded in a communications platform rather than routed only through an app-store listing or paid advertising. For some publishers, that can make community and referral loops a useful acquisition funnel alongside browser, PC, and native mobile releases. Game7 linked Telegram’s growth with the constraints and policy uncertainty Web3 games faced on Apple and Google’s mobile platforms in its report announcement.

A Mini App is not a universal substitute for a native game. A web view may be a poor fit for graphics-intensive titles, console-quality performance, or deep device integration. A product whose assets or economy depend on a non-TON chain also faces a material policy and architecture mismatch under Telegram’s published rules. App stores, meanwhile, retain strengths in device integration, performance, payments, moderation, and familiar consumer discovery.
How developers can decide whether Telegram fits
Distribution fit
- Can the game deliver a satisfying first session quickly in a mobile web view?
- Does its core loop work on a small screen and in short sessions?
- Do referrals, groups, quests, or community participation genuinely improve the experience?
Technical and policy fit
- Plan for Mini App compatibility, Telegram authentication, web performance, and users on unreliable mobile connections.
- Design onboarding for people who do not already have a wallet; forcing a wallet connection too early can erase the low-friction advantage.
- If the Mini App issues or distributes blockchain assets, validate the TON and TON Connect requirements against Telegram’s current published guidelines.
- Account for platform-policy dependence and test the experience independently of the wallet flow.
Economy and audience fit
- Decide whether a token is needed at launch; rewards should not be a substitute for compelling play or a revenue model.
- Test whether NFTs or other assets improve gameplay rather than serving only as speculative incentives.
- Plan for botting, Sybil farming, multi-accounting, and referral abuse before offering rewards.
- Consider ads, purchases, subscriptions, sponsorships, or marketplace fees where appropriate instead of relying solely on token appreciation.
- Report total reach, activated users, retained users, payers, and verified-human users separately; do not treat them as interchangeable.
The significance of the 2024 shift
Telegram’s 21% share is meaningful evidence that developers embraced an alternative route to Web3 game distribution in 2024. Its strongest implication is about onboarding and acquisition: a game could meet users inside an existing social environment. The statistic does not prove Telegram had become the leading destination by active players or revenue, or that launch volume converted into enduring games. Retention, monetization, and playable quality are the harder tests the launch count cannot answer.
