The Google Pixel 4a 5G still handles everyday tasks and has a useful OLED screen, capable main camera and headphone jack. But Google no longer provides Android-version or security updates for it. In 2026, it is best treated as a very cheap temporary or backup phone—not a sensible primary phone for sensitive accounts or years of use. Check its exact model and carrier compatibility before buying, and compare its price with a supported refurbished Pixel.
What the Pixel 4a 5G is
Released in 2020, the Pixel 4a 5G is a distinct, larger phone—not simply the standard Pixel 4a with 5G added. It has a faster Snapdragon 765G processor, a larger battery, an ultrawide rear camera and 5G connectivity. Google said it was first available through the US Google Store in October 2020; availability dates varied by region. Its original US launch price was $499, compared with $349 for the LTE-only Pixel 4a. Google’s availability information and the official specification brochure document the model and launch details.
Retail listings may call it “Pixel 4a (5G),” “Pixel 4a with 5G” or “Pixel 4a 5G.” Confirm the model, rather than relying on a listing title, since the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G differ in size, chip, camera setup and network support.

These figures come from Google’s technical brochure. Battery capacity is not the same as the health of a used phone’s battery, and the two model weights reflect different network variants.

Software support: the deciding drawback
Google lists the Pixel 4a 5G among phones that no longer receive Android-version or security updates. It launched with Android 11, and the minimum three-year update period Google described at launch has expired. The current status is documented on Google’s Pixel update page.
Occasional Google Play system or app updates are not a substitute for full device security updates. The phone may still run installed apps, but that does not mean Google is continuing to patch the operating system. For banking, password management, work, medical information or other sensitive use, an unsupported phone is a poor choice.
To check the installed software on an existing device, open Settings → System → Software update. This shows the Android version and security update level; checking does not restart official support.
Custom Android distributions are an option only for owners comfortable with a separate technical project. Availability, installation, bootloader requirements, update reliability, camera behavior and banking-app compatibility depend on the specific project and can change. Installing a custom ROM should not be treated as a guarantee of complete or dependable security support.

Everyday performance and display
The Snapdragon 765G was a respectable mid-range processor in 2020. It remains adequate for calls, messaging, browsing, email, navigation, streaming, social media and light photo editing. It is dated beside current mid-range chips and newer Pixel processors, particularly for demanding games and newer imaging or AI features. A launch-era TechRadar review reported occasional interface stutters, slow loads and weaker benchmark performance than some Snapdragon 765 phones; those are review observations from the phone’s launch period, not a current test.
Casual games and older 3D titles are more suitable than competitive or graphics-heavy games. The 60 Hz screen also cannot show the smoother motion of a high-refresh-rate display. The OLED panel still offers sharp resolution and strong contrast, while the plastic body keeps the phone relatively light. Trade-offs include older Gorilla Glass 3, no official water-resistance rating, no wireless charging and a rear fingerprint reader that is less convenient when the phone is on a desk. TechRadar’s launch review also found brightness less competitive with some contemporaries.
Camera quality: still useful, no longer current
The stabilized 12.2 MP main camera can still produce pleasing casual photos, and the 16 MP ultrawide gives it more framing flexibility than the single rear camera on the standard Pixel 4a. Google’s Night Sight, Portrait mode and Super Res Zoom are among the listed features. The rear camera can record up to 4K at 60 fps, a notable capability for a 2020 mid-range phone. Its age shows in low-light processing, dynamic range, ultrawide quality and zoom: there is no telephoto camera, and newer Pixels have more capable camera systems and processing. The 8 MP selfie camera is fixed focus. TechRadar described the cameras as competent rather than exceptional at launch, while noting the video options as a strength. Extended high-resolution recording can also be difficult on a used phone with a worn battery.

Battery life and repair trade-offs
Google’s brochure gives the battery’s typical capacity as 3,885 mAh and its minimum as 3,800 mAh, with wired charging up to 18 W and no wireless charging. A launch-era TechRadar review reported a full day under its medium-to-heavy normal-use conditions, but that result cannot predict endurance from a six-year-old unit: battery condition depends on its history and whether it has been replaced.
Google’s “up to 48 hours” figure is not normal-use battery life. It depends on Extreme Battery Saver, which limits features and apps; Google’s launch explanation also notes that 5G is disabled in the test mode. See Google’s launch announcement.
A used unit may have reduced capacity, sudden charge drops, shutdowns under load, heat or slow charging. Before purchase, test charging with a suitable cable and charger, check the port and watch the battery percentage during ordinary use. Google’s battery-performance program for the standard Pixel 4a did not affect the Pixel 4a 5G; do not assume that program applies to this model. Google’s program information makes the distinction.
A battery replacement may be worthwhile if the rest of the device is sound and you accept its unsupported status. iFixit’s Google phone battery parts page lists Pixel batteries, but check current stock, compatibility and local labor cost. Repair is less attractive if the screen, charging port or camera glass also needs work; a new battery does not restore software support or fix other aging components.

5G and carrier compatibility
“5G” in a listing does not guarantee service on every carrier. Pixel 4a 5G variants support different networks, and some US units were made specifically for Verizon, including mmWave support. Compatibility depends on the exact model, the carrier’s supported bands and certification, SIM or eSIM setup, and whether the phone is locked. Google warns that not all Pixel 4a 5G models work on all 5G networks in its 5G compatibility guidance; see also its network configuration guidance.
Before paying, verify each of these with the seller and intended carrier:
- Get the exact model number and establish whether it is an unlocked Sub-6 or Verizon/mmWave variant.
- Check the carrier’s current compatibility database and confirm support for the bands you need, plus VoLTE for voice service.
- Confirm the device is not carrier-locked and that the IMEI is clean, not reported lost or stolen.
- Check that your SIM or eSIM can be activated on that model; do not rely on “unlocked 5G” in the listing.
What to inspect on a used phone
Software and network support are only part of the risk. A short inspection can reveal faults that make a low asking price misleading:
- Screen: Look for cracks, dead pixels, OLED burn-in and uneven brightness.
- Battery and charging: Check for rapid drain, unexpected shutdowns, heat, loose USB-C connection or intermittent charging.
- Cameras and audio: Test both rear cameras, autofocus, video recording, microphones, speakers and the headphone jack.
- Biometrics and connections: Test the rear fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular calling and mobile data.
- Ownership and reset: Verify the IMEI and carrier status, then make sure the seller removes their Google account and factory-resets the phone so it is not left activation-locked.
When buying one makes sense
The Pixel 4a 5G is most defensible as a very inexpensive backup, temporary phone or hobby device for light use. Its headphone jack, OLED screen, clean Google Android experience and still-capable main camera may matter more to some buyers than modern refinements. It is a poor value if priced near a supported used Pixel, and a poor fit for anyone who needs ongoing security updates, strong gaming, water resistance, modern camera features or several years of reliable service.

If a supported replacement costs only modestly more, the update gap is usually the more important difference than the 4a 5G’s headphone jack or low purchase price.

Google’s Certified Refurbished program says its devices receive battery evaluation and a one-year limited warranty, with genuine parts used where necessary; listed inventory and prices are not permanent. Google’s update page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates, making a newer supported model a safer long-term choice than the unsupported 4a 5G: Pixel update information.
