15 Spanish Teenagers Sentenced Over AI Fake Nude Images of Classmates

A juvenile court in Badajoz, Spain, sentenced 15 minors aged 13 to 15 to one year of probation after they used AI tools to create fake nude images of female classmates and shared them in two WhatsApp groups. The court also required gender-equality and responsible-technology classes. The case involved reported charges relating to child-abuse imagery and the victims’ moral integrity.

What happened in the Badajoz case?

According to Ars Technica’s account of the case, the minors took photographs of female classmates from social media and used AI applications to place the girls’ faces onto images of naked female bodies. The resulting images made the classmates appear nude, although the reporting does not indicate that the girls had posed for nude photographs. The images were circulated in two WhatsApp groups.

The victims and defendants were minors. Their identities should remain private; the use of an ordinary social-media photo does not make its subject responsible for what others did with it.

What did the court order?

The court imposed one year of probation on each of the 15 minors, along with classes covering gender and equality and the responsible use of information and communication technologies. This was a juvenile-court sentence, not a prison term. Probation does not mean the conduct was treated as harmless: the case concerned sexualized images of children and injury to the victims’ dignity.

What charges were reported?

Reporting described charges involving 20 counts of creating child-abuse images and 20 counts involving offenses against the victims’ moral integrity. The available account does not clearly explain how those counts were allocated among the defendants, so it would be inaccurate to say that every teenager faced 40 counts.

It is also useful to distinguish a conviction from a sentence: conviction concerns a finding of legal responsibility, while sentencing is the court’s decision about the consequence. The reported outcome here was probation and educational requirements in a juvenile proceeding.

Why can a fabricated image be treated as abuse material?

“Fake” describes how an image was made; it does not settle whether making or sharing it is lawful or harmless. A real child’s face can be inserted into sexualized imagery without the child ever posing for it. In Badajoz, the reported charges included creating child-abuse images as well as offenses against personal integrity. The case therefore shows that authorities may pursue manipulated sexual depictions of minors under existing protections even when the depicted nudity was fabricated.

Different kinds of imagery raise different factual and legal questions:

  • Manipulated imagery: an actual child’s face or likeness edited or composited into sexual content, as reported in this case.
  • Fully synthetic imagery: an AI-created depiction that may not correspond to a real person.

Those categories are not interchangeable, and this Spanish case is not a universal ruling that every AI-generated image is illegal everywhere. Legal definitions and outcomes depend on jurisdiction, the age and identity of the person depicted, the image’s nature, the conduct involved, and applicable juvenile law. Creating, possessing, requesting, and distributing an image may also be treated differently.

Why fake images can still cause real harm

A fabricated image can expose a child to humiliation, harassment, social exclusion, reputational damage, or threats. Reporting on the case described fear and anxiety among victims and families, shame and silence, and concern that images might spread beyond the original groups or resurface later. An image’s falsity does not make the distress or violation of privacy unreal.

AI tools can lower the technical barrier to this abuse: a publicly available profile picture may be enough to make a sexualized fabrication. Messaging groups can speed circulation, and a victim may face disbelief or have difficulty showing immediately that an image is manipulated. In this case, creation with AI applications and sharing through WhatsApp were separate acts; the reporting does not establish that WhatsApp created the images, endorsed them, or was found liable.

How this case fits the wider problem

The Badajoz case is distinct from the earlier Almendralejo case, another Spanish incident involving AI-generated naked images of teenagers; the cases should not be conflated. Euronews reported on the Almendralejo case separately.

For broader context, Ars Technica reported that the Internet Watch Foundation found 20,254 AI-generated images on one dark-web child-abuse forum during a one-month period in 2023, with more than half assessed as likely criminal. That statistic concerns the forum examined by the IWF; it is not evidence that the images in Badajoz reached the dark web.

What parents and schools can do if a child is targeted

For families and victims

  • Preserve evidence when safe: screenshots, usernames, timestamps, group names, message links, and notifications can help document what happened.
  • Avoid forwarding the images to collect evidence or prove the incident. Retain relevant material without increasing its circulation.
  • Report the account or message using the platform’s abuse or child-safety reporting process, and contact local law enforcement or a child-exploitation reporting service where appropriate.
  • Tell the school if classmates, school devices, or school-related groups are involved. Do not pressure the targeted child to confront alleged perpetrators directly.
  • Seek confidential psychological support. A child should not be blamed for having an ordinary photograph online.

For schools

  • Handle synthetic sexual imagery as a safeguarding and sexual-abuse concern, not merely as a technology prank.
  • Preserve relevant evidence and follow the mandatory-reporting rules that apply locally.
  • Protect the targeted student from retaliation and victim-blaming; consider appropriate separation and counseling while the matter is handled.
  • Make school policies explicit about synthetic and manipulated sexual imagery, as well as authentic photographs, consent, and responsible technology use.

These are general safeguarding measures, not instructions reported as part of the Badajoz court order.

What the public account does not establish

The reporting does not clearly specify how the 40 reported counts were distributed among the 15 minors, whether the images spread beyond the two WhatsApp groups, or the full procedural history of the juvenile proceedings. It also does not establish that the victims received compensation. Those details should not be assumed.
