Samsung Knox is both a security architecture built into supported Galaxy devices and a portfolio of cloud services for organizations. The built-in layer protects device integrity, credentials, apps, and data. Separate Knox services help businesses enroll, configure, manage, update, monitor, support, finance, or restrict Samsung devices.
It is not one app, a universal antivirus product, or a guarantee that a phone cannot be hacked. Consumers usually use Knox without buying or installing anything; businesses choose individual services, a Knox Suite plan, or Knox integrations for an existing UEM such as Microsoft Intune.
Samsung Knox at a glance

Samsung describes the security platform at Samsung Knox and its cloud portfolio on the Knox Suite page.
What “Secured by Knox” means
The badge refers to security integrated into supported Samsung hardware and firmware, not a separate consumer subscription. Knox combines hardware-assisted trust with software controls such as secure boot, protection against unauthorized system modification, encryption and credential protection, integrity checks, and administrator attestation signals.

Organizations can use Android Enterprise work profiles or fully managed modes to separate work and personal data, then apply Samsung-specific controls through a compatible management platform. KPE extends that framework with capabilities such as Common Criteria Mode, DualDAR where supported and licensed, Universal Credential Management, Network Platform Analytics, audit logging, and policies delivered through the Knox Service Plugin. Details vary by model, Android/One UI version, region, license, and management platform; Samsung’s KPE documentation and supported-device database are authoritative.
Samsung uses phrases such as “government-grade security” in its product positioning. That is not a blanket rating for every Galaxy device. Certification applies to a particular device, cryptographic module, operating-system version, service, geography, and evaluation scope; see Samsung’s certification information.
Is Samsung Knox an app?
Usually, no. Core Knox protections are integrated into supported devices. Business deployments may add cloud consoles, enrollment agents, management plugins, or EMM/UEM integrations. A Knox-related package visible in Settings is not the whole security platform, and deleting a visible package does not remove hardware and firmware protections.
Knox Mobile Enrollment documentation describes the cloud-side enrollment workflow at Samsung’s Knox Admin Portal guide.

Secure Folder is a consumer-facing protected space for selected apps and files. Knox is the broader security architecture and enterprise-services family underneath and around it. A work profile, a fully managed corporate phone, a shared device, and Secure Folder have different ownership, privacy, and administrator models; Secure Folder is not identical to enterprise work-profile management.

Knox Service Plugin: the integration point
The Knox Service Plugin lets a compatible EMM/UEM apply Samsung-specific KPE policies. Android Enterprise supplies common Android management; the UEM is the administrative system; KPE adds Samsung extensions; KME handles provisioning. This is why a company can manage Galaxy devices in Intune without replacing Intune with Knox Manage.
What is Knox Mobile Enrollment?
KME links an approved device to an enrollment profile so that, after it connects to the internet during first setup, it automatically enters the organization’s EMM/UEM. Samsung documents support for fully managed and Android Enterprise work-profile configurations and reseller-uploaded IMEIs.

- Register an approved reseller when using reseller-assisted upload.
- Have the reseller upload the correct device IMEIs.
- Approve the uploaded devices in the portal.
- Create an enrollment profile and assign it to those devices.
- Specify the compatible EMM/UEM and its enrollment settings.
- Connect each factory-reset device to the internet and complete the Knox deployment flow.
Samsung’s KME setup guide says basic KME does not require a license; advanced settings require a valid Knox Suite Enterprise Plan license. It also says Knox solutions support the latest five major Android versions, including the latest, subject to product and device limitations. Geography, firewall rules, EMM support, profile assignment, and ownership records can still prevent enrollment.
What is Knox Manage?
Knox Manage is Samsung’s cloud-based EMM, optimized for Samsung while supporting documented enrollment scenarios on other platforms. It can manage corporate-owned, fully managed, dedicated/kiosk, work-profile, and shared-device deployments; distribute apps; enforce restrictions; maintain inventory; and perform remote administration.
Documented enrollment choices include a Google Play agent, QR-code enrollment, and KME. See Samsung’s guides for adding a device and single-device enrollment.
Firmware, customization, and ownership controls
Knox E-FOTA
E-FOTA lets administrators test firmware, create deployment groups, schedule releases, and monitor rollout rather than relying entirely on user-initiated updates. That is useful where an update could interrupt a business app, but it creates responsibility: maintain a test group, validate applications, monitor failures, and avoid delaying important security fixes. Eligibility is model-, region-, OS-, and license-dependent; check Samsung’s compatibility database.

Knox Configure
Configure applies branded layouts, restrictions, standard settings, and dedicated-device behavior remotely. Samsung documents out-of-box, QR-code, and browser enrollment in its enrollment guide. For Android 13 and later, a documented profile-update path is Settings → Advanced features → Configuration service → Profile information → Update. Older versions use Settings → About phone → Software information → Knox Configure → Apply latest profile. Menus are version-sensitive.
Knox Guard
Knox Guard can display messages or lock devices for financing, leasing, overdue payments, theft prevention, or resale-risk programs. It is not a general consumer “find my phone” feature. Incorrect locks can create ownership, support, and data-access problems, so legitimate operators should use the documented process at Samsung Knox Guard.
Does Samsung Knox cost money?
Consumers
The built-in Knox security layer is normally included with supported Samsung hardware. You do not generally buy a separate Knox subscription to use those protections or Secure Folder.
Businesses
Samsung currently presents a free Knox Suite Base Plan for setting up devices with an existing EMM/UEM, plus paid Essentials and Enterprise plans. Samsung advertises a 90-day trial for Knox Suite Enterprise Plan, Knox Configure, and Knox Guard, supporting up to 30 devices. Current registration details are on Samsung’s registration page.
There is no single global Knox price. Samsung says paid pricing varies with region, products, license volume, contract terms, reseller services, existing UEM licensing, and device eligibility, and directs buyers to authorized resellers. See Samsung’s pricing guidance. Normalize per-user and per-device costs before comparing with another UEM.

Can you disable or remove Knox?
Do not treat Knox like an ordinary uninstallable app. Its underlying protections are part of supported hardware and firmware. Rooting or unauthorized modification can change integrity status, affect warranty or compliance, disable enterprise features, and prevent re-enrollment.
On a managed phone, an employer, school, carrier, reseller, or financing provider may retain ownership or enrollment records. A factory reset can erase local data without releasing cloud-side management. If you legitimately own the device, ask the responsible IT department, original reseller, carrier, financing provider, or Samsung enterprise support to unassign and release it. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s or creditor’s controls.
Common problems and recovery steps
KME does not enroll a device
- Confirm the IMEI is uploaded, approved, and assigned to the intended profile.
- Check the profile’s EMM settings and verify that the EMM supports KME.
- Confirm the model, Android version, region, and network/firewall access are eligible.
- Ensure the device is factory-reset only after considering data loss and ownership implications.
- Use supported manual or QR enrollment as a fallback.
Samsung’s troubleshooting context is in the KME guide.
A Configure profile will not update
Verify enrollment, profile assignment and publication, internet access, Android-version compatibility, and the correct version-specific menu path. The relevant workflow is documented at Knox Configure enrollment.
A firmware update breaks a business app
Keep a test group, check app and device compatibility, release to a small production cohort, monitor failures and battery/network effects, then expand. E-FOTA helps control timing; it does not replace application testing.
Employees ask what administrators can see
Visibility depends on enrollment mode and policy. A personally owned phone with a work profile, a company-owned fully managed phone, a kiosk, and a shared device expose different controls. Knox does not automatically give an employer unrestricted access to personal content.

Knox with Intune or another UEM
The practical choice is often not “Knox versus Intune.” An organization can keep its existing UEM as the system of record, use KME for provisioning, and add KPE policies through the Knox Service Plugin. Knox Manage is the alternative when Samsung’s own EMM console is preferred.
| Need | Likely approach |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365-centered mixed endpoints | Intune, adding Samsung Knox integrations where required |
| Samsung-focused fleet without an established UEM | Knox Manage or a Knox Suite plan |
| Multiple Android manufacturers | Android Enterprise with a cross-platform UEM; add Samsung extensions selectively |
| Critical, staged firmware rollout | Add Knox E-FOTA if the exact models and regions support it |
Choosing Knox by use case
- Just bought a Galaxy phone: rely on built-in Knox; use Secure Folder if you need a separate private space.
- Buying company devices in bulk: use KME with your existing UEM or Knox Manage.
- Need Samsung-specific policies in Intune: evaluate KPE and the Knox Service Plugin.
- Running kiosks, scanners, or point-of-sale devices: evaluate Configure, dedicated-device management, and possibly Capture.
- Need staged firmware releases: evaluate E-FOTA and maintain application-testing groups.
- Financing or leasing devices: evaluate Guard with clear ownership and support procedures.
- Need remote help-desk intervention: evaluate Remote Support and define privacy controls.
Knox versus common alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Intune | Microsoft 365 organizations managing Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, and endpoints | Per-user licensing and broader ecosystem may be unnecessary for a small Samsung-only fleet |
| Omnissa Workspace ONE | Large mixed-platform fleets with Omnissa investment | Usually requires a quote and may be more than a small Samsung deployment needs |
| Google Android Enterprise | Common Android management framework across manufacturers | Does not by itself provide every Samsung-specific KPE, firmware, customization, or Guard workflow |
| ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus | Cost-conscious mixed fleets and existing ManageEngine customers | Samsung-native services may offer deeper device-specific control |
For reference, Microsoft’s U.S. pricing page currently lists Intune Plan 1 at $8 per user/month paid yearly, Plan 2 at $4 per user/month as an add-on, and Intune Suite at $10 per user/month paid yearly, subject to Microsoft’s terms: Intune pricing. Those per-user figures are not directly comparable with Knox’s region- and product-dependent quotes.
Is Samsung Knox worth it?
For consumers, Knox is usually valuable precisely because it is integrated and largely invisible; there is normally nothing to purchase or remove. For businesses, buy only the components tied to a defined requirement. Start with device models, Android versions, region, ownership model, fleet size, existing UEM, and required workflows, then verify eligibility before promising a feature.
Knox strengthens Samsung-specific security and operations, but it does not replace identity security, multifactor authentication, application management, patch governance, backup, endpoint detection where applicable, user training, or incident response.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Samsung phone have Knox?
No. Knox features and services depend on the exact Samsung model, Android/One UI version, region, license, and product. Check Samsung’s supported-device database before relying on a specific capability.
Will a factory reset remove Knox management?
Not necessarily. A reset may remove local data while cloud ownership or enrollment records remain. The organization, reseller, carrier, or financing provider must release a legitimately owned device.
Can I use Samsung Knox with Microsoft Intune?
Yes, where the device, Android Enterprise mode, Intune integration, and Knox Service Plugin/KPE requirements are supported. KME can provision devices while Intune remains the management console.
