For most people, the iPad Air with M4 is the best all-round tablet for work and study. Choose a Microsoft Surface Pro if you need Windows desktop apps, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 if you want Android with an included S Pen, and the iPad Pro with M5 for demanding creative work. For lower-cost study, consider the iPad with A16 or Galaxy Tab S10 FE; for handwriting without general-purpose computing, choose reMarkable Paper Pro. The right pick depends less on raw speed than on the software you need, how much you type or write by hand, and the cost of completing the setup.

The recommendations are editorial judgments based on tablet apps, work and study fit, handwriting and typing options, portability, and the need for desktop software. Tom’s Guide currently places the iPad Air M4 at the top of its general tablet guide and identifies the iPad Pro M5, Surface Pro, and Galaxy Tab S11 as power-user or productivity alternatives: Tom’s Guide’s tablet guide.
How to choose a tablet for your actual workload
Light productivity
Email, web research, calendars, video calls, cloud documents, PDF reading, lectures, and basic notes do not usually require a premium tablet. The iPad with A16, Galaxy Tab S10 FE, Galaxy Tab S11, and iPad Air can all suit these tasks. If this is your use case, prioritize a comfortable screen, reliable note-taking, and the total price over top-tier processing power.
Long-form typing and office work
For essays, reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and work that involves many browser tabs, a keyboard and trackpad matter as much as the tablet. An iPad Air or Galaxy Tab S11 can handle substantial typing, but check how your preferred apps manage files, multitasking, and external displays. The Surface Pro is the clearest choice when you need full Windows desktop applications or conventional Windows file workflows; Microsoft positions it as a tablet-to-laptop 2-in-1 with attachable keyboards and Windows productivity features: Microsoft Surface Pro.

Handwritten notes and PDF annotation
For lecture notes, equations, diagrams, marked-up slides, or textbook PDFs, verify the precise pen supported by the precise tablet. Samsung lists S Pen support for the Galaxy Tab S11 and the S10 FE models, while the S11 family’s pen support is a notable value because the S Pen is included. Apple’s current lineup supports different Pencil models depending on the iPad, so do not assume every Pencil works with every iPad. Check Samsung’s tablet comparison and Apple’s iPad comparison before buying.
Desktop or specialist software
Start by listing the applications and peripherals your school or employer requires. Full desktop Excel capabilities, macros, development tools, CAD, engineering or laboratory software, legacy Windows apps, specialist VPN clients, and browser extensions can rule out an iPad or Android tablet even when its hardware is fast. If Windows is required, consider the Surface Pro first, then verify the exact app, driver, plug-in, VPN, printer, scanner, and lab-device compatibility—especially on ARM-based configurations.
Best overall: Apple iPad Air with M4
The iPad Air is the safest all-round recommendation when you want strong tablet apps, polished note-taking and PDF tools, good performance, and a portable device without paying Pro prices. It fits students and general professionals whose work centers on documents, meetings, research, digital notes, and creative apps rather than desktop-only software. Current editorial coverage identifies the M4 Air as a strong performance-to-price choice among Apple tablets: Tom’s Guide.
For handwriting and typing, relevant current iPad Air models support Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, according to Apple’s comparison page: Apple iPad comparison. Budget for those accessories separately: a tablet-only price does not describe the cost of a complete note-taking and typing setup. Choose another operating system if you need macOS or Windows-only programs.

Best for Windows work: Microsoft Surface Pro
Surface Pro comes in 12-inch and 13-inch options and is the strongest fit here for people who need Windows apps in a tablet form. It is worth prioritizing for Windows-first workplaces, technical courses, or buyers who want one conventional computer that can also be used as a tablet. Microsoft describes the Surface Pro as a 2-in-1 with touch displays, attachable keyboards, pen input, and Windows applications: Microsoft Surface Pro.
Choose the size around your routine
The 12-inch model is the more portable option; the 13-inch model gives documents and split-screen work more room, with optional OLED display configurations. Microsoft advertises up to 16 hours of local video playback and up to 12 hours of active web browsing for the 12-inch model, and up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web browsing for the 13-inch model. These are Microsoft’s stated figures, not guaranteed classroom or work runtimes: the company says actual battery life varies by configuration, usage, network, and settings. See Microsoft’s Surface Pro specifications.
Check compatibility and the complete setup
Before choosing a Surface for specialist work, confirm that each required application and peripheral works on the particular processor configuration. Pay special attention to ARM support for drivers, plug-ins, macros, VPN clients, printers, scanners, and school lab equipment; ask your employer or institution if it provides a supported-device list. Microsoft also notes that keyboards, Microsoft 365, and some accessories or software are sold separately, so include them in your budget: Microsoft Surface Pro.
Best Android tablet for most users: Samsung Galaxy Tab S11
The Galaxy Tab S11 suits Android users who want an included S Pen, Samsung ecosystem features, DeX desktop-style multitasking, and expandable storage. Samsung lists the standard S11 at 1.03 pounds, with Wi-Fi 6E and microSD expansion up to 2TB; those specifications are specific to this model, not every Samsung tablet. Confirm current specifications on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab comparison page.

It is a particularly practical study pick if handwriting and split-screen work are important, since you can write beside a PDF or browser without purchasing a separate pen. A keyboard is still an additional part of a serious typing setup. Android tablet app quality varies, so check the exact apps and enterprise tools your work or course requires rather than assuming phone app availability means a good tablet workflow.
Best large-screen Android option: Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra
The S11 Ultra is for buyers who will use a large display for side-by-side notes and research, large PDFs, presentations, or a desk-based DeX setup. Samsung lists the body at 12.85 × 8.21 inches and 1.53 pounds, versus 9.99 × 6.51 inches and 1.03 pounds for the standard S11. The Ultra’s listed features also include an S Pen, IP68 rating, Wi-Fi 7, and microSD expansion up to 2TB. These are model-specific specifications: Samsung Galaxy Tab comparison.
The same screen that helps with split-screen work makes the Ultra less appealing for crowded commutes, one-handed reading, or small bags. It is a poor value if your needs stop at email, light notes, and browsing; consider whether the larger display will be used enough to justify the device and keyboard setup.
Best premium creative tablet: Apple iPad Pro with M5
The iPad Pro is aimed at people who can use its premium display and performance for demanding creative work, such as illustration, video editing, graphics, and other high-end iPad apps. Current coverage lists the M5 chip, OLED displays in 11- and 13-inch sizes, and storage options up to 2TB: Tom’s Guide. Apple positions the Pro for demanding workflows including advanced video editing and graphics-heavy work: Apple iPad Pro.

For ordinary coursework, web browsing, word processing, or simple PDF markup, the Air or base iPad is generally a more sensible place to spend. The Pro is still an iPad, not a Mac: its premium hardware does not provide macOS applications or make every desktop workflow available. Check exact Pencil and keyboard compatibility for the model on Apple’s iPad comparison page.
Best lower-cost study options
Apple iPad with A16
The base iPad is a credible pick for reading, lectures, browsing, email, basic documents, and lightweight study. Engadget describes the entry-level iPad as sufficient for light work and casual use: Engadget’s tablet guide. It is worth considering if you already own a Bluetooth keyboard or mainly need a reading and note-taking device. Its display and multitasking capabilities are less suited to heavier workflows than the Air or Pro. Apple lists different Pencil and keyboard compatibility by model, so check the exact generation before buying an accessory: Apple iPad comparison.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE and S10 FE+
The FE models offer a lower-cost Android route for notes, PDFs, browsing, and media, with S Pen support and expandable storage on the relevant models. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document listed the S10 FE at $499.99 for 8GB/128GB and $569.99 for 12GB/256GB; it listed the S10 FE+ at $649.99 for 8GB/128GB and $749.99 for 12GB/256GB. These are Samsung MSRP figures from its March 2026 price document, not guaranteed current retail prices: Samsung March 2026 MSRP PDF. The FE models are not the right choice if you need flagship performance for demanding creative work or sustained desktop-style multitasking.

iPadOS, Android, or Windows?
| System | Where it fits best | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| iPadOS | Polished tablet apps, notes, PDFs, creative work, education, and people already using iPhone or Mac | It is not macOS; some professional apps are tablet versions, file handling may be less flexible, and keyboard or Pencil commonly costs extra |
| Android | Samsung users, included S Pen value, DeX, split screen, flexible file handling, and microSD on supported models | Tablet app quality and enterprise support vary; do not assume every phone app or corporate workflow adapts well |
| Windows | Desktop applications, conventional office work, enterprise tools, and laptop replacement | Traditional desktop apps can be less touch-friendly; keyboard and pen may cost extra; ARM app, driver, and peripheral compatibility requires checking |
Give operating-system fit more weight than processor comparisons. A fast tablet is still the wrong work device if it cannot run required software, connect to the tools you use, or handle your organization’s security requirements.
Calculate the complete setup cost
Compare what you will actually use, not just the tablet-only price. Add a keyboard, stylus, protective case, charger if needed, USB-C hub or dock, and any cellular service. Microsoft says some Surface accessories and software are sold separately. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document listed a Galaxy Tab S11 Book Cover at $89.99 and an S11 Ultra Book Cover at $109.99; these are dated MSRP signals, not assurances of current selling prices: Samsung March 2026 MSRP PDF.
- Choose a keyboard based on typing comfort, trackpad quality, lap stability, backlighting, layout, viewing angles, and whether it protects the screen.
- Check whether the stylus is included and how it charges, stores, and works with your note-taking apps.
- Consider whether you need an external display, USB-C peripherals, a mouse, or a dock.
- For many students, a case and stylus matter more than a keyboard. For long-form work, the keyboard may be essential.
- Cellular connectivity can help during travel or unreliable Wi-Fi, but compare the recurring data-plan cost with using a phone hotspot.
- Cloud storage does not replace offline access; confirm that assignments and reference files remain usable without an internet connection.
Storage needs depend on what stays on the device: 128GB can be enough for documents and moderate app use, while 256GB is a safer general-purpose target for several years. Large creative projects, media collections, or substantial offline libraries may call for 512GB or more. A supported microSD card is useful for files, but it does not guarantee that every app can be installed or run from the card.
When a tablet can replace your laptop
A tablet can serve as your only computer when its operating system supports every required app and your daily tasks work comfortably with its keyboard, file handling, and connections. Treat the Surface Pro as the first candidate if your work depends on Windows desktop software; an iPad or Android tablet is more compelling when your work is already tablet-app or browser based. Before buying, work through these checks:
- List required software. Verify course, employer, exam-proctoring, accessibility, VPN, and security tools on the exact operating system and model. Check CAD, statistics, programming, lab, or clinical software where relevant.
- Check peripherals and displays. Confirm the tablet supports the monitors, printers, scanners, docks, and other devices you need, including any required drivers and the number of external displays.
- Try the typing workflow. If possible, test the keyboard for a long writing session and make sure its trackpad, layout, and stand work where you expect to use it.
- Test multitasking. Open the combination you need—for example, a meeting, notes, a PDF, and browser tabs—and confirm you can move information between apps without disrupting the task.
- Verify offline work and hand-in formats. Make sure files are available without Wi-Fi and can be edited and submitted in the formats your school or employer accepts.
- Ask about organizational requirements. Business users should confirm mobile-device management, remote wipe, identity management, VPN, and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace policies with IT.
Video-call users should also check camera framing in landscape orientation, microphone and speaker quality, whether the keyboard blocks the camera, and whether their specific Teams, Zoom, Meet, or school platform works well while note-taking.
Quick Recap
Which tablet should you buy?
- Choose the iPad Air with M4 for the best balance of apps, performance, portability, handwriting, and general productivity if you do not need desktop-only software.
- Choose the Surface Pro when Windows applications or a conventional laptop workflow are central, after checking compatibility for your exact software and peripherals.
- Choose the Galaxy Tab S11 for Android, an included S Pen, DeX, and expandable storage in a more portable package than the Ultra.
- Choose the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra when the large screen will make a real difference to desk-based split-screen work, PDFs, or presentations.
- Choose the iPad Pro with M5 when demanding creative apps and the premium display justify the extra spend—not simply because it is the most powerful iPad.
- Choose the iPad with A16 or Galaxy Tab S10 FE for lighter study and a tighter budget; compare accessory needs and current prices before deciding.
- Choose reMarkable Paper Pro as a digital notebook if you have another computer for apps, meetings, and web access.
