Yes—but not without a phone number. Telegram officially supports registration with an anonymous phone-number collectible obtained through Fragment, so you do not need a physical SIM card or ordinary mobile line. Telegram announced this option on December 6, 2022, and its current developer documentation still recognizes Fragment numbers for account registration (Telegram announcement; API documentation).
“Anonymous” here means the account is not directly tied to your usual mobile number. It does not make you untraceable: wallet activity, payment records, device data, IP addresses, contacts, writing style and group memberships can still identify or link you.
What you need
- The official Telegram app, preferably on Android or iOS for initial registration.
- A Fragment account and the wallet or payment method shown by Fragment at the time you buy a number.
- A secure device and a recovery plan for both Telegram and the wallet.
- A new display name, username and profile image that are not associated with you elsewhere.

How the official no-SIM method works
1. Obtain a Fragment phone-number collectible
- Open the official marketplace at fragment.com.
- Open the phone-number collectible section and read the listing or auction terms.
- Connect the required wallet or payment method and complete the transaction shown by Fragment.
- Save ownership and transaction records, and protect the wallet credentials.
- Follow the listing’s current instructions for using the number with Telegram.
A Fragment number is not a conventional SIM, VoIP line or guaranteed SMS inbox. It is a Telegram-compatible identifier whose ownership and registration process are tied to the Fragment/TON ecosystem. Do not assume it can receive calls or messages from unrelated services.

2. Register in Telegram
- Install or open the official Telegram mobile app.
- Choose the option to start a new account.
- Enter the Fragment number in international format exactly as displayed.
- Complete the verification flow shown by Telegram and Fragment. The code-delivery method can vary; do not assume SMS.
- Choose a new display name and skip contact access.
- Do not reuse a username, photograph, biography, email address or links connected with your identity.
Telegram supports desktop, web and macOS clients, but registration controls differ by platform and app version. Completing first registration in the official mobile app is generally the least ambiguous route. Button labels may change.
Hide the number from other Telegram users
Open Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number. Set Who can see my phone number? to Nobody, then choose the most restrictive available option for Who can find me by my number?. Telegram documents these controls in its FAQ.
This is protection from other users, not erasure of the number. Someone who already knows and saved it in their address book can still see or recognize it. Telegram accounts remain connected to mobile-number identities; each number represents a separate account, and landlines are not supported.

Prevent accidental deanonymization
Contacts and address books
- Decline contact permission during setup.
- If contacts were imported, open the current Settings > Privacy & Security > Data Settings controls and use Delete Synced Contacts.
- Disable ongoing contact synchronization.
Telegram’s privacy policy explains that syncing can be stopped and synced contacts deleted from its servers (privacy policy).
Username and profile

Telegram says a username lets people contact you without knowing your number, and replying does not reveal it unless your settings allow that. Public posts, recognizable groups, writing habits, shared links, bots, mini apps and location data can still identify you.
Other privacy settings
Use restrictive choices for last-seen and online status, profile photos, calls, group and channel invitations, forwarded-message attribution and peer-to-peer calling where those controls appear in your current build. Disable notification previews on the device if people nearby could read them.

Secure access before using the account
- Open Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification and create a strong, unique password. Telegram requires this password in addition to a login code.
- Add a recovery email only if you can secure it without linking it to your identity.
- Set an app passcode under Settings > Privacy and Security.
- Review Settings > Devices (also called Active Sessions) and terminate every unrecognized session.
- Protect the Fragment wallet and preserve ownership records. Never share Telegram login codes.
A passkey, where offered, can strengthen sign-in but also creates another device and recovery dependency. Telegram recommends two-step verification and a strong app passcode for heightened security (FAQ).
Recovery warning: Telegram says losing control of the connected phone number can permanently cost you the account. Keep access to the Fragment ownership mechanism, avoid casually transferring or disposing of the number, and do not treat a one-time purchase as a complete recovery plan.

- Fragment purchases, wallet addresses, blockchain activity and payment records.
- IP addresses, network metadata, device characteristics and notification data.
- Recovery email, synced contacts and existing sessions.
- Reused names, images, usernames, writing style, public groups and external links.
- Information voluntarily given to bots, websites, mini apps or other users.
Use the term “anonymous number” in Telegram’s narrower sense: not directly tied to your normal SIM, not a promise of invisibility or immunity from platform rules or lawful investigation.

You do not need Secret Chats merely to hide your phone number. Telegram says ordinary cloud chats use client-server/server-client encryption, while Secret Chats use client-to-client end-to-end encryption, are device-specific and are not stored in the cloud. They disappear from that device when you log out (FAQ).
Use Secret Chats when end-to-end encryption is required, while remembering that the other participant can photograph the screen, identify you or disclose the conversation.

What to do when registration fails
The number is rejected
- Recheck the international format exactly as shown by Fragment.
- Confirm the collectible is still available and intended for Telegram registration.
- The number may already be linked to an account, unsupported, or subject to an anti-abuse restriction.
- Do not repeatedly request codes; use official Telegram or Fragment support, not activation resellers.
No code arrives
- Check whether Telegram delivered the code inside an already logged-in Telegram session rather than by SMS.
- Wait before requesting another code and never share it.
- Do not proceed with a number you cannot continue to control or recover.
Telegram notes that login codes may be sent to an existing connected device, but this does not replace maintaining control of the number.
Telegram requests an SMS fee or limits the account
Fees and anti-abuse challenges can vary by region, app flow and registration circumstances; there is no universal fee guarantee. Avoid mass joining, bulk messaging, scraping, automation and repeated registrations. Use Telegram’s in-app support or reporting path if the account is limited. Anonymous numbers remain subject to Telegram’s spam systems and rules.
Why common alternatives are weaker

Disposable SMS services are especially unsuitable for a long-lived account because Telegram warns that losing control of the connected number can mean permanent loss. A username alone cannot create a normal Telegram account.
