In December 2024, StatCounter estimated Chrome’s worldwide share of browser usage across all platforms at 68.38%, compared with 4.92% for Edge. Chrome led by 63.46 percentage points—about 13.9 times Edge’s reported share. These are estimates of observed web usage, not percentages of devices with each browser installed.

Worldwide browser usage across all platforms

StatCounter’s December 2024 figures, reported on January 1, 2025, put Chrome first, Safari second, Edge third and Firefox fourth in worldwide, all-platform browser usage. The percentages below are reported StatCounter results.

Browser Worldwide share, all platforms
Chrome 68.38%
Safari 17.09%
Edge 4.92%
Firefox 2.46%
Other browsers, combined remainder 7.15% (calculated from 100% minus the four listed shares)

The platform label matters: this is not a desktop-only ranking. StatCounter provides separate views for all platforms, desktop and mobile. Those views have different denominators and should not be mixed into one ranking.

How far ahead was Chrome?

Subtracting Edge’s 4.92% from Chrome’s 68.38% gives a gap of 63.46 percentage points. Dividing the two reported shares gives a ratio of about 13.9 to 1. Both comparisons describe reported usage-share percentages; they do not say Chrome had 13.9 times as many users.

Edge was a substantial browser, but it was not the second-largest worldwide in this all-platform snapshot: Safari’s reported 17.09% placed it between Chrome and Edge. Safari’s strength on Apple mobile devices affects an all-platform ranking, while a desktop-only comparison can look different.

Why Edge looks stronger in desktop comparisons

Edge’s share is more concentrated on desktop than across all device types. When mobile browsing is included, Chrome and Safari account for much of the activity, so Edge’s all-platform percentage is lower than its desktop-only percentage. A Windows-focused view can differ again. A shift between those views is a change in scope, not evidence that one result is wrong.

The available historical coverage cited StatCounter desktop usage at 11.9% in December 2023 and 12.87% in November 2024. That indicates a modest rise over those reported months, not a December 2024 desktop figure and not proof that Chrome users switched to Edge. The Register’s account of the desktop trend should not be used to infer the missing December value. StatCounter’s historical desktop chart is separately available at the link above.

W3Counter category December 2024 share
Chrome 67.4%
Safari 13.3%
Internet Explorer & Edge, combined 4.8%
Firefox 3.6%
Opera 1.1%

These are not interchangeable with StatCounter’s numbers. W3Counter combines Internet Explorer and Edge in that category, whereas StatCounter’s cited 4.92% is Edge alone. The providers also observe different website panels and apply different measurement and classification methods. W3Counter separately lists Edge 131 at 3.58%, but that is one browser version—not Edge’s total share—and should not be compared with total Chrome. See the W3Counter December 2024 report.

What “market share” measures—and what it does not

Here, “market share” means estimated browser usage, not sales, downloads, installations or a census of people. StatCounter says its Global Stats draw on anonymous visitors to more than one million websites and more than three billion page views per month. Its figures are based on observed browsing activity, so repeated visits and the makeup of participating sites matter; an installed browser that is rarely used contributes differently from one generating frequent page views. StatCounter’s methodology FAQ explains its sample, weighting, JavaScript treatment and browser classification.

  • MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
  • KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
  • INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
  • It is not installed-base share. The 4.92% figure does not mean that only 4.92% of computers have Edge installed.
  • It is not necessarily unique-user share. Browser activity or page views are not a count of distinct people.
  • It does not measure browser quality. Usage reflects distribution, defaults, operating systems, habits and compatibility as well as user choice.
  • It does not prove switching. A change in Edge’s share alone cannot establish that users moved from Chrome; device mix, geography and shifts among other browsers also affect the estimate.

Why published numbers differ

Different providers work from different participating websites and geographic mixes. They may count page views differently, weight countries differently, handle JavaScript-dependent observations and browser identification differently, or group browser families in different ways. Bot filtering, prerendering and embedded browsers can also affect classification. Rounding and later revisions may create small differences. StatCounter discusses several of these factors in its FAQ; W3Counter’s combined Internet Explorer and Edge category is one concrete classification difference.

For a reproducible comparison, keep the provider, month, geography and platform together. StatCounter documents downloadable monthly data and its parameters in the FAQ; its December 2024 download endpoint is available here. Verify the file’s labels and selected platform before quoting a figure. December 2024 usage is a historical snapshot, not a statement about browsers’ present-day shares.
