You can send a Spotify song to an Instagram Story or Note, where it appears as a share card and—on supported accounts—a short playable preview. If you want music to run under a photo, Reel or video, choose the track inside Instagram’s own music tools instead. Spotify does not generally transfer the full song audio into an Instagram post.
First decide what “add Spotify music” means
These are different actions:
- Recommend a track: share its artwork and a link to Spotify.
- Let Story viewers hear a sample: use Spotify’s Story share; a short preview may play in the Story.
- Show your current listening: put a song in an Instagram Note.
- Use music as a soundtrack: select audio from Instagram’s licensed library (or an approved original/commercial track) while creating the content.
A Spotify share is therefore a discovery and linking feature, not a general-purpose audio-import tool.

Share a Spotify song to an Instagram Story
Steps
- Open Spotify’s mobile app on iPhone or Android.
- Open the song, album, playlist, artist page or other supported item.
- Tap Share (or the three-dot menu, then Share).
- Choose Instagram Stories.
- Instagram opens a Story draft with Spotify artwork or a generated share card.
- Add text, GIFs, mentions or other Story edits, then tap Your Story, Close Friends or the applicable publishing control.
What viewers get
Spotify announced on August 21, 2025 that shared track Stories can include an automatic short audio preview. A viewer can tap the music sticker or song title to open the track in Spotify. Presentation and eligibility can differ by account, app version, region, track and rollout status; some Stories still behave as artwork-plus-link cards. This workflow does not upload the complete song, guarantee a preview for every viewer, or provide unrestricted control over the song’s full timeline.

Share a Spotify song to Instagram Notes
From Instagram
- Open Instagram’s inbox and start a new Note.
- Tap the music-note icon.
- Choose Share from Spotify.
- Select the currently playing track, or follow the prompt to use the next song played within the integration window if nothing is playing.
- Add optional text and tap Share.
From Spotify
- Open the song and go to Spotify’s Now Playing screen.
- Tap Share, then choose Notes.
- Finish editing the Note in Instagram and publish it.
Spotify describes the Notes integration for iOS and Android. The first use may ask you to link Spotify and Instagram through Instagram’s app or website permissions. Spotify’s current feature description is available at Spotify Newsroom.
Add the same song to an Instagram photo post
Use Instagram’s audio library rather than Spotify as the source:

Add music to an Instagram Reel
- Create or upload the Reel.
- Tap Instagram’s audio or music control.
- Search the in-app library, select an available track, or choose permitted original audio.
- Trim or position the audio using Instagram’s controls, preview the Reel and publish.
Instagram distinguishes licensed audio from original audio. If licensed music is uploaded as original audio, Instagram may relabel it with the artist and track, and availability can change with rights agreements. Details are in Instagram’s audio guidance for Reels. A Spotify share is not a reliable way to embed a complete Spotify track in a Reel.

Why a Spotify song may be unavailable or silent
“Instagram Stories” is missing from Spotify’s Share menu
- Update both Spotify and Instagram.
- Confirm both apps are installed on the same phone.
- Force-close and reopen both apps.
- Try Spotify’s Share control from both the Now Playing screen and the track’s three-dot menu.
- Check that the phone’s operating system supports current app releases.
- As a fallback, create the Story in Instagram and share the Spotify track link or card manually.
Spotify recommends keeping both apps current; menu labels can vary by release.
The Story has artwork but no audible preview
- The audio-preview rollout may not cover your account, region or track.
- One of the apps may be outdated.
- Instagram may be showing the older artwork-and-link behavior.
- The viewer’s app, playback state or connection may prevent the sample from playing.
The card can still open the song in Spotify even when no in-Story preview is audible.

The Music sticker or Add music control is missing
Meta says access to Instagram’s licensed library can depend on account type, content type, country or region, and current rights agreements. Business accounts and some commercial posts have tighter restrictions. Check Meta’s licensed-music availability guidance.
The song is on Spotify but not searchable on Instagram
The services have separate catalogs and licenses. Search Instagram by the exact title and artist, but a Spotify subscription cannot unlock a track that Instagram has not licensed or that has been temporarily removed.

What happens when someone taps the song?
A Story viewer may tap the song title or music sticker and choose Open on Spotify, or may first land on an Instagram audio page. For supported linked accounts, Instagram can also offer an Add control that saves the discovered song to Spotify’s Liked Songs. The complete listening experience remains in Spotify; it is not transferred into Instagram.
Business accounts, licensing and copyright
Meta describes Instagram’s ordinary licensed music library as intended for personal, non-commercial use. Access can be restricted for business accounts, promotional content and some regions. For commercial Stories, Reels or ads, Meta points to Sound Collection, which provides royalty-free music and sounds for eligible uses, including ads: Meta’s music-library and Sound Collection guidance.
Do not download, screen-record or extract a Spotify stream to force it into a video. Those methods can conflict with platform terms or copyright permissions. Use Instagram’s licensed catalog, Sound Collection, audio you own, or music separately licensed for the intended use.
Do you need Spotify Premium?
The cited Spotify and Instagram documentation does not establish Premium as a requirement for these sharing functions. Availability is better explained by app version, account linking, rights, geography and rollout status.
