How to Create and Use Multiple Desktops (Spaces) in macOS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS calls its virtual desktops Spaces. You create and manage them in Mission Control, then switch between task-focused desktops without closing apps or minimizing windows. A practical setup might keep communication on one Space, research on another, writing on a third, and meetings on a fourth.

The instructions below describe current macOS labels; menu wording and available gestures can vary slightly by version, keyboard, language, and display setup.

What are Spaces on a Mac?

A Space is a workspace that displays a particular set of app windows. Mission Control is the overview and management interface; its Spaces bar runs along the top and can contain ordinary desktops, full-screen apps, and Split View arrangements. Moving to another Space changes which windows are visible—it does not close apps or create a separate user account or isolated computer environment.

Apple documents up to 16 Spaces, although full-screen apps and Split View arrangements also consume positions in the Spaces bar, making a smaller number easier to navigate. See Apple’s guide to working in multiple spaces.

Open Mission Control

Use whichever method fits your hardware:

  • Press the Mission Control key, commonly F3 (the label varies by keyboard).
  • Press Control–Up Arrow.
  • Swipe up with three or four fingers on a trackpad, depending on its settings.
  • Double-tap with two fingers on a Magic Mouse.
  • Drag a window to the top edge if that Mission Control gesture is enabled.
  • Use a configured Hot Corner.

Shortcuts and gestures can be changed in System Settings. Apple lists the available controls in its Mission Control reference.

Create a new desktop

  1. Open Mission Control.
  2. Move the pointer to the top edge of the display to reveal the Spaces bar.
  3. Click the Add button at the right of the Spaces bar.
  4. Click the new desktop thumbnail to enter it.

A new Space normally starts empty. Existing app windows remain in the Spaces where they were already open.

Switch between Spaces

  • Control–Left Arrow and Control–Right Arrow move one Space at a time.
  • Swipe horizontally with three or four fingers on a trackpad.
  • Swipe horizontally with two fingers on a Magic Mouse.
  • Open Mission Control and click the required thumbnail in the Spaces bar.

Keyboard shortcuts are often the most dependable choice with an external mouse or disabled gestures. If they do nothing, check Keyboard settings for modified shortcuts.

Move a window to another desktop

Drag to the screen edge

Grab the window and drag it toward the left or right edge. Hold it there briefly; macOS moves the window to the neighboring Space. This can be imprecise when edge-based window tiling is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Mission Control

  1. Open Mission Control.
  2. Find the window preview in the main area.
  3. Drag that preview to the target Space in the Spaces bar.
  4. Select the target Space if needed.

Mission Control is preferable when moving a window several Spaces away or when edge dragging triggers tiling. Moving one window moves that window only; an app can have other windows in different Spaces.

Make an app open in a particular Space

  1. Open the app so its icon appears in the Dock.
  2. Control-click (or right-click) the Dock icon.
  3. Choose Options, then inspect Assign To.
Assignment What it does
All Desktops Makes the app available in every Space.
This Desktop Associates the app with the current Space.
Desktop on Display [number] Uses a particular display’s desktop when multiple monitors are connected.
None Opens the app in whichever Space is active.

Assignment guides where macOS opens or displays the app; it does not necessarily gather every existing window into one Space.

Delete a Space

  1. Open Mission Control and reveal the Spaces bar.
  2. Hover over the Space thumbnail you want to remove.
  3. Click the Delete button that appears.

macOS moves windows from a deleted Space to another Space rather than closing them. Full-screen and Split View thumbnails can also be exited from the Spaces bar.

Identify Spaces without relying on names

Ordinary desktop Spaces do not have a prominent, universally available custom-name field. Keep a fixed task order, use different desktop pictures, and create only as many Spaces as you can recognize quickly. Apple documents changing desktop pictures to distinguish Spaces; in some workflows you may first need to assign System Settings to all desktops and then change each Space individually.

Stop macOS from jumping to another Space

When you select an app, macOS can switch to a Space containing that app’s open windows. Control this at Apple menu → System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control by changing When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application.

  • Enabled: selecting an app can take you to the Space where its window already exists.
  • Disabled: you remain in the current Space, even when the app’s windows are elsewhere.

This setting is documented in Apple’s multiple-Spaces guide.

Full-screen apps, Split View, and window tiling

These features solve different problems:

  • Spaces: task-oriented virtual desktops.
  • Split View: two apps sharing a full-screen Space.
  • Window tiling: regular windows arranged on the current desktop without creating a separate Space.

A full-screen app appears as its own item in the Spaces bar. To pair another app with it, open Mission Control and drag the regular window onto the full-screen app’s thumbnail, then select the resulting Split View. When Split View ends, the remaining app becomes full screen in its own Space. Apple’s Split View instructions explain this behavior.

Choose the right arrangement

  • Use Spaces for broad context changes, such as work versus personal tasks.
  • Use Split View for a focused two-app task, such as drafting beside research.
  • Use ordinary tiling when several windows must remain visible together.

Use Spaces with multiple monitors

Go to Apple menu → System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control and review Displays have separate Spaces. With it enabled, each display has its own Spaces arrangement; it is also required for Split View on other displays and for Stage Manager on multiple displays. Dock and window behavior can change when this setting is toggled, and actual switching depends on the display arrangement, full-screen apps, and this setting. See Apple’s Desktop & Dock settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a second display, enter Mission Control on that display to see the windows and Spaces associated with it. The Dock’s Desktop on Display [number] assignment appears only when multiple displays are available.

See windows and move files across Spaces

  • Control–Up Arrow: opens Mission Control and shows open windows and Spaces.
  • Control–Down Arrow: shows windows for the current app.
  • Command–Mission Control key: moves windows aside to reveal the desktop.

You can copy text, images, or files, switch Spaces, and paste normally. Mission Control can also expose a destination window or the desktop while you drag items.

Troubleshoot common Spaces problems

The Spaces bar is missing

Enter Mission Control, then move the pointer to the top edge. On a second display, invoke Mission Control there; each display can show its own relevant arrangement.

Control–Arrow does nothing

Confirm you are pressing Control, not Command; check Keyboard settings for changed shortcuts; try Mission Control and select the Space manually. Keyboard-remapping utilities can also intercept the shortcut.

An app opens in the wrong Space

Review Dock icon → Options → Assign To, then check the automatic app-switching setting described above.

A full-screen app disappeared

Open Mission Control and select its thumbnail; full-screen apps occupy their own Spaces-bar item.

Spaces keep changing order

In Desktop & Dock → Mission Control, review Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use. When enabled, recent activity can reorder the Spaces bar.

Edge dragging tiles the window

Use Mission Control’s preview drag instead. Current macOS releases can assign screen edges to window tiling, which competes with the neighboring-Space gesture.

Organize Spaces around activities

Spaces work best when each represents a context rather than an arbitrary app count. For example:

  • General productivity: communication; browser research; writing and references; meetings.
  • Development: editor and terminal; documentation and testing; databases and logs; communication.
  • Study: reading; notes; drafting; citations and files.

Many users find three or four task-based Spaces easier than a long sequence. Spaces may be a poor fit if you constantly compare unrelated windows, frequently drag files between contexts, or expect complete isolation of apps, notifications, and processes.

Spaces compared with other Mac window tools

Tool Best for Key limitation
Mission Control Finding windows quickly Does not provide persistent task separation by itself.
Full-screen apps Concentrating on one app Each app adds an item to the Spaces bar.
Split View Two-app workflows Not a replacement for several task-oriented Spaces.
Stage Manager Reducing visible clutter around a central app and recent window groups A window-management mode, not a direct equivalent to Spaces.
Multiple physical monitors More simultaneous screen area Behavior still depends on the separate-Spaces setting.

Apple describes these as distinct window-management tools in its Mac window-management guide.

Quick reference

Task Default or commonly available control
Open Mission Control Mission Control key (commonly F3) or Control–Up Arrow
Switch left or right Control–Left/Right Arrow; horizontal trackpad or Magic Mouse swipe
Show current app’s windows Control–Down Arrow
Create a Space Mission Control → Spaces bar → Add
Move a window Drag to an edge or use Mission Control
Delete a Space Mission Control → hover thumbnail → Delete

Apple notes that keyboard shortcuts and gestures can be customized, so treat these as defaults rather than immutable bindings.
