The Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G is still appealing as a discounted or used media phone: it has a 120Hz AMOLED display, a capable stabilized main camera, stereo speakers, a headphone jack and 67W wired charging. But it is an older model with limited remaining software-support prospects, and a used battery or incompatible imported variant can turn a bargain into a poor buy. Consider it only if the price is well below that of a newer supported phone and you have checked its condition, software and carrier fit.
First, make sure it is the 5G model
The Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G share a name and several headline features, but their processors, cameras and connectivity differ. Xiaomi lists separate specifications for the 5G model and the 4G model.
| Feature | Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G | Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | MediaTek Dimensity 1080 | Snapdragon 732G |
| Main camera | 50MP Sony IMX766 with OIS | 108MP |
| Display | 6.67-inch AMOLED, up to 120Hz | 6.67-inch AMOLED, up to 120Hz |
| Battery and charging | 5,000mAh, 67W wired | 5,000mAh, 67W wired |
| Operating system at launch | MIUI 14 based on Android 12 | MIUI 13 based on Android 11 |
| Connectivity | 5G, Wi-Fi 6 | 4G, Wi-Fi 5 |
The 108MP specification belongs to the 4G version, not this 5G model. Check the listing’s exact model number and the phone’s About phone screen before paying; a product title alone is not enough to establish which variant is being sold.
What the display and design are like
The 5G model has a 6.67-inch Flow AMOLED panel with 2,400 × 1,080 resolution and a refresh rate up to 120Hz. OLED’s individually lit pixels deliver deep blacks and strong contrast; the higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother. Dolby Vision and a DCI-P3 wide color gamut are specified for compatible content. The large panel suits video and games, though its width makes one-handed use less convenient.

Xiaomi specifies peak brightness of up to 900 nits and a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements, and peak brightness should not be read as sustained full-screen brightness in direct sun. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.
The global specifications list a 162.9 × 76 × 7.9mm body weighing 187g. It includes a side-mounted fingerprint reader, dual speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C and an IR blaster. NFC availability can vary by market. Xiaomi’s global specification page does not establish an IP68 rating, so do not assume flagship-level water protection. In-box accessories, including the case and charger, can vary with region and seller.
Everyday speed and gaming
A 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 1080, with CPU speeds up to 2.6GHz and Mali-G68 graphics, powers the phone. Xiaomi’s listed global configurations pair it with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, 8GB and 128GB, or 8GB and 256GB; RAM is LPDDR4X and storage is UFS 2.2. The 8GB/256GB version is the more comfortable choice if the price difference is small. The global 5G model has no listed microSD expansion, so choose enough storage at purchase.
For ordinary browsing, messaging, video and multitasking, the platform remains capable. Casual and moderate gaming is reasonable, but this is not a current gaming phone. Newer UFS 3.1 or UFS 4.x storage is faster on paper, and demanding games or long sessions can put more pressure on heat and battery life. Tech Advisor likewise described the Dimensity 1080 as capable for its class while criticizing the software experience and noting that rivals could be more rounded (review). No benchmark score or sustained-temperature result is established here.

Camera quality: a good main sensor, weaker extras
The rear setup combines a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8MP ultrawide with a 119-degree field of view, and a 2MP macro camera. The selfie camera is 16MP. Xiaomi lists a 1/1.56-inch main sensor and f/1.88 aperture. OIS helps counter hand movement, which is useful for still photos and video, but it does not guarantee sharp results in every low-light scene.
Main camera and low light
The IMX766 is the most useful camera here. In good light, it has the hardware to capture detailed images, while stabilization can help when light levels fall. Image processing still matters, so do not mistake the sensor’s reputation for flagship-level night photography or consistently wide dynamic range.
Ultrawide, macro and portraits
The ultrawide is useful when fitting a landscape or group into the frame, but its lower resolution makes it less suited to fine detail and low light than the main camera. The 2MP macro is a minor extra rather than a meaningful reason to choose the phone. There is no dedicated telephoto camera; portrait separation relies on the main camera and software. Tech Advisor also noted the absence of a dedicated depth sensor in its review.
Video and selfies
Video modes include 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 30 or 60fps, alongside slow-motion options. The listed modes establish resolution and frame rates, not how well stabilization, autofocus or exposure hold up in every situation. The 16MP front camera covers selfies and video calls without adding a specialty lens.

Battery life and 67W charging
The phone launched with a 5,000mAh typical-capacity battery and supports 67W wired charging. Xiaomi’s global specification page lists a 67W charger in the box, but a used or imported listing may not include it; check what is actually being supplied. Xiaomi’s product page describes battery and charging claims as based on internal laboratory testing, so they are not guaranteed real-world runtimes or charging times (product details).
A healthy battery should make the phone suitable for ordinary daily use, and fast wired charging is a genuine convenience. But a handset from this generation may have spent years cycling its battery. Gaming, 5G, high brightness, video recording and 120Hz use also affect endurance. Charging speed depends on temperature, charger and cable authenticity, and battery condition; treat battery health as a purchase criterion, not a cosmetic detail.
Software support is the biggest reason to hesitate
The Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G launched with MIUI 14 based on Android 12. Xiaomi’s current global HyperOS 3 schedule does not list this model, though Xiaomi says rollout schedules can change (HyperOS 3 schedule). That is not proof of a specific final patch date: Android-version upgrades, interface updates and security patches are different, and availability can vary by region, ROM and carrier.
Xiaomi says smartphones typically receive security updates for at least two years after first shipment, with some models supported for three years or longer. That general policy is not a model- and region-specific promise; Xiaomi also has support FAQs for Redmi Note 12 Pro devices covering cases where MIUI or Android security patches stop arriving (general update policy; Redmi Note 12 Pro update FAQ). Check Xiaomi’s security update information and the actual handset rather than assuming updates continue because the phone still works.

On a used phone, go to Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS/MIUI version → Check for updates, then inspect the security patch level shown in system settings. Record the installed version and patch date before purchase. Do not infer a guaranteed number of future Android releases from the phone’s original launch software.
MIUI or HyperOS experience also varies with software version and region. Xiaomi’s interface may include preinstalled apps, duplicate Xiaomi and Google apps, and advertising in some system apps or regions. Notification handling and battery management can be more restrictive than on cleaner Android interfaces. Tech Advisor identified software polish as a notable weakness in its assessment. A seller’s custom or mismatched ROM adds risk: flashing or changing firmware can lead to data loss, update problems, banking-app or Play Integrity failures, and modem, camera or NFC issues. Unless you know how to recover a modified device, buy the official ROM intended for your market rather than treating bootloader unlocking or custom ROMs as an easy fix.
A phone can remain functional after patches stop, but that is not the same as being a sound choice for sensitive accounts or long-term use. If current security updates are important, a newer supported phone is the safer category to shop.

Xiaomi’s global model lists LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/26/28/32/66 and 5G bands n1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/66/77/78. Xiaomi cautions that network availability depends on region and operator support. These bands do not by themselves guarantee voice-over-LTE provisioning, 5G access or carrier certification.
Best Value
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
For US buyers especially, “unlocked” is not a compatibility guarantee. Exact model and regional variant matter; China, India and global versions can differ in supported bands, firmware, NFC behavior and Google services. Verify the model against the carrier’s current requirements and whitelist, including VoLTE and 5G provisioning, before purchase. Check especially carefully for Verizon, and do not rely on a seller’s broad claim that it works with a named carrier or MVNO.
How to judge the price against newer phones
There is no reliable current official retail price established here, and used prices vary with country, storage, condition and seller. Judge the handset against newer phones actually available in your market, not its original launch price. A newer device may be the better long-term value if it costs only modestly more and brings longer support, a local warranty, more predictable battery health and confirmed carrier compatibility. That can outweigh the Redmi’s faster charging or attractive display.
- Consider it when the discount is substantial, the battery is healthy, the exact variant works with your network, and its screen, main camera, headphone jack or fast charging suit your priorities.
- Pass when it costs close to a newer supported model, the patch level is unacceptable for your needs, the seller cannot identify the ROM or model, or you require several more years of major Android updates.
- Choose something else if you need wireless charging, eSIM, a telephoto camera, verified IP68 protection, clean software or dependable compatibility with a specific US carrier.
Do not treat older comparison recommendations as current bargains: phones such as the Pixel 6a, OnePlus Nord 2T and Nothing Phone (1), mentioned in launch-era comparisons, are also aging models. Compare current local price, update status and condition rather than choosing by an old review’s shortlist.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
Complete these checks in person where possible, or make them conditions of a returnable purchase:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the device: confirm exact model number, regional variant, storage capacity and installed ROM. Make sure it is the 5G model, not the 4G version.
- Check software: inspect Android/HyperOS or MIUI version and security-patch date; run the system update check. Confirm Google Play certification and that the apps you depend on, including banking apps, work.
- Inspect the screen: test touch response across the panel and look for AMOLED burn-in, green tint and dead pixels.
- Test physical features: check fingerprint reader, every camera and flash, microphones, speakers, headphone jack, USB-C port and buttons. Look for signs of water damage or a swollen battery.
- Test connectivity: use your SIM to check calls, LTE and 5G where available; also test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC if your market variant supports it. Confirm the IR blaster if you intend to use it.
- Assess charging and battery: confirm that USB-C charging works and ask whether a reliable battery-health diagnostic is available. Verify whether the charger is genuine or compatible and what accessories are included.
- Protect the transaction: establish that the phone is not carrier-locked, financed, reported stolen or bootloader-modified. Prefer a seller with a clear return window and written condition and warranty terms.
Who should buy it?
The Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G still makes sense as a low-cost multimedia handset when its display, OIS-equipped main camera, stereo sound, headphone jack and quick charging matter more than long-term support. It is not a sensible near-new-price purchase or a safe default for buyers who need dependable future patches, US carrier certainty or a clean software experience. Buy only after confirming a meaningful discount, healthy battery, correct regional model and acceptable update status.
