“Apple iPad 9.7 (2017) M6053” refers to Apple’s fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad, introduced in 2017. Apple’s hardware identifiers for this model are A1822 (Wi‑Fi) and A1823 (Wi‑Fi + Cellular). Apple’s identification pages do not identify “M6053” as the model number, so it should be treated as an unverified retailer, catalog, inventory or listing code until the physical device is checked.
It remains usable for reading, video, music and light browsing, but its A9 processor, aging battery, lack of Apple Pencil support and iPadOS 16 software ceiling make it a poor choice for demanding apps or long-term ownership.
What iPad is “M6053”?
The product described by “iPad 9.7 (2017)” is the iPad (5th generation), often called the iPad 5 or 2017 iPad. Apple lists the Wi‑Fi model as A1822 and the Wi‑Fi + Cellular model as A1823: Apple’s iPad identification guide.
“M6053” is not an Apple hardware identifier shown on Apple’s official pages. It may be a marketplace SKU, distributor code or inventory reference. Do not use it to determine the generation, storage or cellular capability.

This is not the 2016 iPad Pro 9.7-inch, the iPad Air 2, the 2018 sixth-generation iPad or the later ninth-generation iPad. Screen size alone does not distinguish those models.
How to identify the exact device
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Check Model Name, Model Number and Capacity.
- If a longer part number is shown, tap it to reveal the A-number. A1822 is Wi‑Fi; A1823 is Wi‑Fi + Cellular.
- On a cellular unit, check the IMEI and confirm that the intended carrier accepts the device.
The A-number may also be printed on the rear case, although worn printing, a case or refurbishment can make it difficult to read. A listing that says M6053 but shows an A-number from another iPad should be treated as unreliable.

Apple’s technical specifications are available at Apple Support. The screen is Retina resolution, but it lacks True Tone, laminated construction and the wider color gamut found on many newer iPads. Those differences can mean more reflections and a less natural image for drawing or outdoor use.

Wi‑Fi versus Wi‑Fi + Cellular
A1822: Wi‑Fi
This version connects through wireless networks and has no mobile-data modem or SIM tray.
A1823: Wi‑Fi + Cellular
This version adds LTE hardware and a nano-SIM tray. A cellular-capable iPad is not guaranteed to work on every network today. Before buying, verify the IMEI, carrier lock status, supported LTE bands, account eligibility and whether the carrier still supports the device. Test mobile data during the return period.
iPadOS support in 2026
As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists iPadOS 16.7.16 for the fifth-generation iPad; that release was dated May 11, 2026. See Apple’s security-release page and its security-update chronology. The model is outside the newer iPadOS 17-or-later major-release branch.

- Renewed products look and work like new. These pre-owned products have been inspected and tested by Amazon-qualified suppliers, which typically perform a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process. Packaging and accessories may be generic. All products on Amazon Renewed come with a minimum 90-day supplier-backed warranty.
- 9.7-inch Retina display, wide color and true tone
- A9 third-generation chip with 64-bit architecture
- M9 motion coprocessor
This is a statement of Apple’s currently listed support, not a prediction that no further security update can ever appear. The operating-system ceiling also affects apps: many iPadOS 16-compatible apps still work, but each developer can raise its minimum version independently. Streaming, office, browser, gaming and security-sensitive apps may eventually require a newer iPadOS. Previously downloaded apps sometimes offer an older compatible build, but only when the developer and App Store make one available.
What it can still do well
- Read books, news and PDFs.
- Play local or streamed video when the current app version supports iPadOS 16.
- Handle email, music and light web browsing.
- Serve as a recipe screen, smart-home dashboard or children’s offline-media device.
- Make basic video calls when the chosen service still supports the operating system.
- Work as an inexpensive secondary or travel tablet.
Where it falls short
- The A9 chip is slow for modern web pages, demanding games and heavy multitasking.
- It does not support Apple Pencil. Apple Pencil support began with the sixth-generation standard iPad; see Apple Community’s model discussion.
- There is no USB-C port, Smart Connector or modern iPad multitasking performance.
- Its old software branch creates increasing app-compatibility risk.
- An eight- or nine-year-old battery may have substantially less capacity than when new.
Accessory and case compatibility
The iPad uses Lightning, so a buyer may need a Lightning cable, charger, stand or Bluetooth keyboard. A Bluetooth keyboard is generally safer than a model-specific keyboard case because it does not depend on chassis cutouts.

Do not buy a case solely because it says “9.7-inch iPad.” Cases for the fifth- and sixth-generation iPads or some iPad Air 2 units may fit when the manufacturer explicitly lists them, while iPad Pro 9.7-inch cases are not necessarily interchangeable. Camera openings, speaker holes, thickness and button positions differ. Match the exact A-number and the case maker’s compatibility list.

Used-buying checklist
Before paying
- Request a photo of Settings → General → About showing A1822 or A1823, storage and model name.
- Confirm that Find My iPad and Activation Lock are disabled.
- Ask about charging, battery drain, unexpected shutdowns and heat.
- Test the display for touch dead zones, cameras, speakers, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Home button and Touch ID.
- Check the Lightning port for loose connections or charging only at a particular cable angle.
- For cellular models, verify IMEI status, carrier lock and LTE compatibility.
- Get the return period and warranty terms in writing.
Activation Lock
If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account, the iPad remains linked to that account. The seller must remove it remotely or erase the device while signed out. Do not buy an Activation-Locked unit expecting Apple or a repair shop to bypass the lock.
Battery and physical damage
Rapid percentage drops, shutdowns, failure to charge, excessive heat, swelling or a screen lifting from the frame indicate a serious battery problem. A battery replacement can be uneconomical when the tablet also has obsolete software or other faults; obtain a repair estimate before spending money.

There is no universal fair price without a current, region-specific market check. Compare the complete cost: tablet, shipping, charger and cable, case, possible battery work, cellular activation, warranty and return policy. A fifth-generation iPad makes sense only when it is substantially cheaper than a newer supported model and your required apps still run on iPadOS 16.

Walk away or demand a major discount when the seller cannot show the A-number, Activation Lock is present, the battery is failing, Touch ID or charging is unreliable, or the price approaches that of a newer-generation iPad.
Newer alternatives
| Alternative | Why it is better | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| iPad (6th generation) | A10 Fusion chip and first-generation Apple Pencil support | Still an older Lightning iPad |
| iPad (7th generation) | 10.2-inch display, A10 Fusion, Pencil and Smart Keyboard support | Battery age and software support still matter |
| iPad (8th generation) | A12 Bionic, much stronger performance, Pencil support and better app prospects | Used condition and price determine value |
| iPad (9th generation) | A13 Bionic, 10.2-inch display, Pencil support, longer support prospects and a better front camera | Costs more than a fifth-generation unit |
| Recent Android tablet or Chromebook | Often offers USB-C and newer software when bought new | Different app ecosystem and update policies |
Apple’s comparison tools show the hardware differences between generations: fifth-, sixth- and seventh-generation comparison and fifth- versus ninth-generation comparison. Apple’s current range is listed at apple.com/ipad.
Verdict
Identify “M6053” by inspecting the tablet, not by trusting the listing title: the genuine Apple identifiers are A1822 for Wi‑Fi and A1823 for Wi‑Fi + Cellular. The 2017 fifth-generation iPad is still acceptable as a very inexpensive reading, media or light-browsing tablet, provided its battery and hardware are sound and the required apps support iPadOS 16. For school software, gaming, creative work, Apple Pencil use or several years of compatibility, a sixth- through ninth-generation iPad—or a current Android tablet or Chromebook—is the safer purchase.
